“The Blue House” is statuesquely poised on the Ironshore, just 60 feet from the waters edge. The smoke-free house rises three stories into the sky topped off with a widow’s walk for spectacular 180 degree views of the south shore of the island, the ocean and the reef below. The Bay Islands, of which Roatan is the largest, is part of the Bonacca Ridge which is a submerged mountain range. The tops of the mountains form the islands which are surrounded by the world’s second largest barrier reef.
The diving is spectacular. It has been estimated that 90% of all the marine life in the Caribbean can be found in Roatan. Roatan also lies on the edge of the Cayman Trench, which offers superb vertical drop-offs of over 300 meters.
The fringing reef around the island boasts a coral wall that extends almost from the surface to a depth of 35-50 meters. The visibility is often in excess of 30 meters which offers endless possibilities from observing deep water fish to the diverse reef ecosystem on the same dive.
The reef structure provides swim-through channels and small cave systems as well as spur and groove reef with sand patches. Rays, turtles, dolphins and the occasional shark are not unusual sightings in these waters. There are also a multitude of small reef findings that are revealed to those who are patient. There are numerous dive shops in West End and the diving prices are very reasonable.
Once you have equipment, you can either utilize one of the many dive boats on the island or you can dive right off the shore in front of the house. The reef is accessible and the wall drops off less than 100 yards from shore.
The almost constant breezes from the trade winds keep you cool and comfortable. On a clear day you have a view of the rugged mountains of mainland Honduras from the vantage point of the widows walk or from the second level deck. You can also watch the cruise ships come into the port of Coxen Hole. In this island retreat if you would like a little less strenuous activity you can wake to a perfect sunrise and the sound of birds singing, pass the time reading a book or watching the humming birds, and at night be lulled to sleep by the breaking waves against the Ironshore.
The house has air conditioning in both bedrooms for maximum comfort and there are numerous ceiling fans throughout the house to circulate the fresh air from the trade winds.
The white sandy beaches of West Bay have been voted amongst the Top Ten in the Caribbean, and they are less than two and a half miles away from the Blue House.
You can hike trails along the coastline, some of which are accessible right from the house. You can also enjoy a hike through the rainforest accessible from a number of locations around the island.
“The Blue House” is located at the west end of Flower’s Bay, away from any hustle and bustle of the small village, yet within walking distance.
Its location is somewhat remote in that sense, but the friendly people of Flower’s Bay are near by. A RENTAL CAR is usefull and available thru a few agencies, including Avis. There is taxi service as well on the Island but that is seldom as easy as having your own car any time parked under the car-port. The house is about two miles from West Bay beach or West End where there is a lot going on – shops, restaurants, bars, night life, numerous dive shops, tourist activity, a car rental agency, grocery store, Internet Café, coffee shops, an Eco Tourism office, scooter and kayak rentals, a submarine ride and most anything else you will need while on the island.
The house is a short drive or taxi ride from Coxen Hole which is one of the larger towns on the island and has two well stocked grocery stores.. |
