VILLA DI ABING: AN ARCHITECTURAL GEM
VILLA DI ABING: AN ARCHITECTURAL GEM

Rather than repeat the many praises of prior reviewers – with whom I emphatically agree – I’d like to point out an underemphasized attribute of Villa di Abing: the brilliant design and execution of its architecture. Simply put, Villa di Abing is an architectural gem. It seamlessly combines elements of traditional Balinese architecture with modern design and materials to create a harmonious and organic whole. The villa displays numerous aspects of traditional Balinese architecture. It consists of several closely spaced buildings connected by short breezeways, stone steps, and trellised walkways – echoing the multiple buildings and pavilions of a Balinese residential or temple compound. As befits its tropical environment, the villa’s spaces blur the line between indoors and outdoors. The family room/dining room and adjacent mezzanine sitting room are a modern version of an open air Balinese bale, having polished stone floors and no walls, their roofs supported by wooden posts. Both are elevated above the surrounding lush jungle foliage, creating a treehouse-like effect. The roofs of Villa di Abing are of sculpted tile and traditional alang-alang thatch. The interiors of both of the two thatched roofs have been left exposed – as they would be in a traditional structure – and this is a great advantage as each is a tour-de-force of craftsmanship and a delight to the eye. These traditional textures of stone and thatch are perfectly balanced by thoroughly modern (and relatively recent) construction and materials – and by a clean, minimalist décor throughout the villa. This is particularly evident in the ultra-clean and fully modern kitchen and in the lovely bedroom suites – which are fully enclosable as needed. I say “enclosable” because each bedroom can be opened via windows or sliding glass doors to the outside or closed up and air-conditioned as desired. The bathrooms are simply masterpieces – each partially open to the outdoors with abundant filtered sunlight, ultra-modern fixtures, stone steps, sunken oversized tubs, and numerous plants. One feels one is outdoors but with complete privacy. The effect is of bathing in a fern-filled grotto at the base of a waterfall – magical. The use of sustainable building practices is much in evidence throughout Villa di Abing. There is extensive use of local stone – both volcanic basalt and light colored sandstone – and of composite and polished-stone finishes. High density coconut timber has been emRecommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

If you're traveling to Bali, it really doesn't get much better than Villa di Abing. LOCATION: Right on Jalan Jembawan, a 3-minute walk to Sang Spa, Radiantly Alive Yoga, the post office, and Bali Buddha restaurant and health food shop, there's really no need to wander far. But then again, just 2 more minutes and you're on Hanoman and Monkey Forest Road and the Main Road, enjoying the chaotic exciting beauty, shopping, restaurants, and must-see tourist attractions that Ubud has to offer. This place is right in the heart of the action, but set back from the road, so it's quiet when you just want to relax. ARCHITECTURE: This place is a jaw-droppingly beautiful Shangri la, and features really interesting and beautiful Balinese architecture. The common area is something straight out of Dwell magazine, with a day bed looking out into the trees. DECADENT YET PRACTICAL: The accommodations are well appointed and comfortable, again, like something out of a magazine, with a big Buddha statue, silk-encased pillows, lotus flowers in bird baths, and hard wood furniture. The open air bathroom in the suite we stayed in was just amazing, and the stone bathtub was luxurious. We loved jumping in the pool after walking around in the hot, sticky Balinese sun, and lounging in the little gazebo nearby. PRACTICALITY: The owners have done a good job of balancing Balinese aesthetics with an understanding what it is that vacationers want on a practical note: air conditioning, privacy, natural soap and shampoo, hot and cold running water, a pool, a safety deposit box, a comfortable bed, big fluffy towels, etc. STAFF: The staff are adorable and pleasant and skilled, striking an excellent balance between being helpful and intuiting your needs, without invading your privacy or being overly chummy. They (and the owners) honor their culture by leaving offerings around the villa every day, which adds to the cultural experience of staying here. The breakfast is simple but tasty, with a plate of fresh tropical fruit every morning. Our stay at Villa di Abing was like a vacation within our vacation, and if we ever find ourselves in Bali again, we will certainly be booking here again with no hesitation whatsoever!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

We stayed in Villa di Abing for 3 days last week - and cannot praise it highly enough! The stunning design of the villa and its grounds reflect traditional Balinese buildings, with a modern twist. So spacious, yet still with a cosy feel. The location is only a couple of minutes walk from busy Ubud, yet it provides amazing quietness and seclusion. The rainforest gully down the back is full of trees, birds and bamboo. A delightful outlook. The villa was impeccably clean and well maintained, the grounds are an inspiration, and the bathrooms had a wonderful atmosphere, plentiful hot water and great water pressure too. The beds were just so comfortable, so we slept like logs during our stay. The team at Villa di Abing were superb also - very caring, friendly and informative. To Iluh, Made, Gede and Ngurah - thank you so much! (Made - your banana crepes are the best in Bali!) We would certainly recommend Villa di Abing to any group of family or friends. Go on - spoil yourselves!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

Very quiet paradise on same street as organic store/rest. and a stones throw to great restaurants in downtown Ubud. Walk into a 5 star ambience and amenities. Right next door to best massage spa in Ubud; we just walked out the front door onto the massage table every afternoon. This little oasis of luxury in Ubud has a staff that you will want to adopt and take home. We were so touched by their genuine friendliness and sincerity. Just lovely! They make your stay a wonderful delight and will do as much or as little as you like. They cooked us and our friends fabo dinners (my wife got to help and learn) and made us feel like royalty. Would go back to Ubud just to stay here. Spacious and elegantly appointed with 3 bedrooms and baths; private pool and tranquil privacy. After the traffic and noise of Ubud we couldn't wait to come home to Villa Di Abing everyday. We visited friends at hotels around Ubud and nothing compared to our slice of heaven. Would highly recommend it for couples or family.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.

As many have noted, this is a unique and beautiful villa. We also found it very comfortable to live in. It is right in Ubud - just a short walk to the shops and restaurants - yet nature surrounds you. This villa has so much going for it but what really made it so enjoyable for us was the amazing hospitality of the staff. Of course the Balinese are famous for their hospitality but we thought the staff and the management of the villa here were extra special. We truly felt they just wanted us to be happy. Drivers, scooters and laundry were all arranged for us at such reasonable cost it was apparent that nothing extra was being charged (two bags of laundry for the week cost about $5 US total!). We were inquiring about some large peculiar fruit on one of the surrounding trees and Ilu - the manager - picked us up some delicious white mango from the market to try. Also, on departing, I was given a package of incense as I had inquired what type they were burning in our bath area. These personal touches have created warm memories. Ilu was also great to talk to for insight into Balinese culture. The staff are friendly but discrete and I sense experts in sensing how much privacy is desired. Also loved watching the many, many beautiful offerings and blessings made around the property twice a day (5 just around the pool!). Finally, the value is perhaps unbeatable in "downtown" Ubud. Compare with the price of a midrange two bedroom hotel room on Monkey Forest Road which is really no comparison to this huge spacious beautiful villa.Did you find this review helpful? I often holiday in Bali, and have stayed in Ubud several times, however this time because I was going with 2 dear friends, we wanted to stay in a private Villa, but still be in the middle of Ubud. We were not disappointed, the Villa was superb, very friendly staff willing to help with any request. We spent 5 nights and the last night had dinner cooked for us - a truly memorable experience. It was nice to have the privacy of a lounge area we could eat, talk, listen to music. Having our own pool was great. I would highly recommend the Villa to anyone whether it be for one person as a fantastic retreat, or a family (not good for toddlers though), or 3 couples or like us 3 friends. The rates are very reasonable. The only thing wrong was that we could not stay longer. We will most certainly go again.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Having booked over the internet, it is always with some trepidation to arrive late at night for the 1st time in a new City with the whole family. Will we get from the airport to the accomodation OK? Will the accomodation be suitable? Is it to far from Town? etc etc. I need not have worried as soon as we exited the airport Our driver was waiting with an airconditioned minibus (organized by the Villa) and delivered us safely to the Villa in Ubud (about 1 hour from Denpasar). The Villa itself is far nicer than pictures on the website suggest, the rooms, fixtures and fittings would put many 5 star hotels to shame. On arrival we were met with cool drinks, refreshments and by the staff - Made & Gede and owner Ketut. They made us feel right at home (even though it was almost midnight) and you felt that nothing was to much trouble. The villa is impeccably maintained, the staff continually look after you and the surrounds without ever intruding. The pool is amazing and very welcome (we were staying in Mid January) so after mornings exploring UBUD, the midday heat was often avoided by swimming in or lazying around it. The food was especially good with 2 fussy eaters (kids) never complaining about the delicious breakfasts prepared each morning. Indeed everyone was incredably impressed with the standard of restaurants throughout Ubud, not one bad meal was encountered and you would rarely pay more than $5 AU per person. Whilst I did have initial safety concerns with travelling to Bali - these concerns were quickly dispelled in Ubud. The Balinese are a kind and gentle people who are genuily caring and helpful, we never had any problems during the 10days of our stay. By the 2nd week we were quite happy for the kids to go off on there own even at night. The heavily touristed areas of Kuta, may be different but we avoided them. So to some up this was an affordable but luxurious holiday and I would return in a heartbeat.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The Villa was shared by 3 generations of one family and from the oldest (6) to the youngest (2) there was something for all to fall in live with! The boys (aged 5 & 2 1/2) loved the pool, the stairs (a challenge but a fun one!), the 'hopping stones' leading from room to room, the outdoor shower (showering has never been s much fun), the flowers in abundance. The grandfather loved the beautiful, serene ambience, the lack of television (the boys didn't miss it wither), the mango, banana, mangosteen trees and frangipani, and the great views from the balcony. We all loved the nightly frog encounters, the big buzzy bees, the giant snails (complete with black, shiny conch homes), the comfortable beds, the luxurious bathrooms and the always-full water bubbler! We all adored Made and Pitou and relished morning breakfast (mee goreng, banana pancakes and fresh fruit of every color!). Pitou and Made cooked dinner for us on 2 separate occasions (menu provided) and it was very definitely a food highlight of our trip. A Bali experience to savor in every way!
