Hana Palms Retreat - Botanical Paradise in Heavenly Hana
- Minimum stay:Contact owner
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
There is Maui, and then there is Heavenly Hana. Isolated from the rest of the island, the Hana Coast is the last undeveloped tropical paradise on Maui. Hana has been saved from progress by the serpentine Road to Hana. The view of the coastline is spectacular with waterfalls splashing beside the road, and plunge pools lipped in ferns.
The charm of Hana Town is that little has changed in the past 25 years, perpetuating the small town atmosphere, Hawaiian culture, and scenic beauty. Hana Palms Retreat at Hana Gardenland is conveniently located on the Hana Road, just three and one-half miles before Hana Town, seven minutes by car, and one mile from Waianapanapa State Park.
Hana Gardenland encompasses 5 acres of awesome tropical botanical gardens. Thousands of rare and unusual plants and flowers from around the world flourish here. Gardenland has one of the most diverse palm tree collections on Maui with 100 varieties. Botanical signs name the tree and country of origin.
Immerse your senses in a tropical paradise. Walk on grassy paths wandering through lush gardens. See towering palms, rainbow eucalyptus, hanging banyans, exotic fruit trees. Feel a moist breeze on your skin. Listen to bird song. Smell ginger, jasmine, tropical flowers. Taste ripe avocados, lilikoi, bananas, papayas, coconuts, figs.
Within the estate are two residences, the Garden House (which has two complete residential units) and the Palms House. These homes are perfect vacation rentals, surrounded by the beauty and serenity of lush, tropical, botanical gardens.
* Garden House - The Garden House has an upper and a lower residence, with tropical garden views from every window. Each is complete with a separate kitchen and bathroom, and separate entrances. They can be adjoined as one residence as needed. Both are fully furnished with phones, cable TV, DVD, high speed internet, wi-fi. There is extensive bamboo floors, redwood and cedar-wood finish walls. A covered lanai next to the lower residence has a third full bathroom.
Garden House Upper Residence sleeps 6. Two bedrooms with a third bedroom on enclosed sun porch. Full bathroom. Roomy island kitchen. Spacious, open, living room with many windows and views. Dining area on an enclosed sun porch to enjoy the surrounding beauty.
Garden House Lower Residence sleeps 4. Two bedrooms, full bathroom, full kitchen, and living room. Sliding, glass doors open to the botanical gardens and fruit orchard.
* Palms House - The Palms House is a two-story, plantation-style home, reminiscent of old Hana. A spacious, upstairs bedroom and private, downstairs bedroom and loft. Hawaiian-style furnishings with phones, cable TV, DVD, high speed internet, wi-fi. Screen-enclosed lanai with outdoor shower and bath, set amidst a private, tropical paradise.
Palms House sleeps 4. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms with two showers living room and full kitchen.

Hana and East Coast of Maui were a wonderful vacation destination. The 5 acres of this property were amazing, the plams, flowers and fruits everywhere. Definatly the highlight. We enjoyed our stay on the Gardenland property, the property owner and caretakers were helpful. The units in the Garden house we stayed in were as other reviewers have stated: dated but serviceable. Decor is older(as in well used), but clean enough and we did find the laundry area and trash collection area after asking. This would not be suitable for people needing or expecting hotel service/amenities. It is appropriate for adventerous families, and couples. Please note, the house does not have AC (not a problem at all for us), but many people expect it these days. Dont miss Hamoa Beach, and take the drive up to Kipahulu and Lindbergh's grave for more excellent scenery.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children.
Owner response: Happy that our guests enjoyed their visit to Hana Gardenland botanical gardens. The accommodations are particularly suitable and economical for families and groups. As the reviewer has correctly noted, those couples and families on vacation who would like the full suite of hotel services and amenities can enjoy the lovely Travassa Hotel Hana Maui at $500-$1500 per night. Hana is a mild warm and moist climate, and our houses are set up with ceiling fans and window screens to allow the natural breezes through the rooms. Thanks for your review, Robert.

It was rainy while we were there, so perhaps that colored our perception. We stayed in the Garden House Lower Residence, and it was dingy and musty. Because of that, we didn't really want to spend time at the house, but that was ok because there was plenty to do in Hana. We loved the banana bread and smoothies at the nearby food stand, and we enjoyed being based in Hana for a couple of days. It was a bit harrowing to walk to the Red Sand beach, but we're glad we did it. And we loved seeing the lava tube.Owner response: Sorry to hear your vacation days in Hana were rainy. It can happen like that in Hana, and in a tropical rainforest setting during a rainy spell, the rooms can get musty until a few days of sunshine clears them out. Glad that you enjoyed activities in Hana. Robert

Stayed 2 nights June 2011. We are accustomed to staying at Hyatts, Hiltons & Westins, of which this is not: Thankfully! Owner was great: extremely fair price/value. Wife, self, son 16, daughter 13 found this place to be the highlight of our Hawaii vacation. Very rustic, basic, humble, stark Palm House...in the JUNGLE! ...kinda querky & bizzarre & if you are used to luxury this WILL be the least luxurious bed & place you'll ever stay...but you'll treasure it in memmories. Think of it as a campground cabin...a jungle outpost. Place is surrounded by tons of palms & exotic plants...with trails leading throughout property. Apparently 10-20 years ago place was a resort/tree nursary...but maybe went out of business in the 90's, thus succession has taken over, jungle has reclaimed part of half-dozen out buildings which makes it that much more adventurous to explore! (Housing accommodations have been kept up & maintained, though). Exotic flowers & fruit trees grow wild here. Make sure you buy groceries/water @ Costco by Maui airport before you come to Hana as food @ General Store is 10x more. Definitely see the Lava tube, the 40-story waterfall @ state park, red-sand beach, and buy Fresh-catch fish from fisherman @ shore to grill, fruit from roadstands, eat breakfast & lunch @ Hana roadstands: AWESOME experience!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: So happy you enjoyed our beautiful botanical gardens!!! Actually there are just three buildings on the 5 acre botanical estate - Palms House, Garden House and the Gardenland farm shop building. There are no other out buildings covered with jungle - perhaps the reviewer wandered onto an adjacent property. At Hana Gardenland there are wide easy grassy lawns, pathways and trails winding around the gardens, orchards and woods. Thanks.

Owner was responsive and helpful to any questions as was local contact. The listing description and pictures was mostly accurate. The current condition of the upper house is average...the house has great ventilation and potential but is in need of updating. Entry had a musty smell which was covered up by heavy incense smell. Everything worked in the home but the bathroom was dark, towels smelled a bit musty, and it just seemed as if everything had been in place for too many years without painting, cleaning, and changing out dated lamps, furniture, etc. Would recommend adding laundry facilities. Hana was as described....a beautiful step back in time. Be prepared to make meals since the only restaurants in town were marginal. I would not recommend this property to friends or relatives in its current condition.Owner response: Good to hear that the house has great ventilation and everything worked. Ventilation is so important in a humid tropical rainforest environment because there are usually traces of that natural musty smell that visitors from arid regions may be unfamiliar with, but locals are well accustomed to. The high ceilings help ventilation, and the new bamboo floors, cable tv and internet wifi are up-to-date for today's visitor. The furniture and decor are like old Hana, a step back in time, and most visitors appreciate the charm of Hawaiian cottage living where everything is not so modern and sterile looking. By the way, there is complete laundry facility with washer/dryer and linen closet with extra towels and supplies in another building on the 5 acre botanical garden estate. Just have to ask if you don't know where it is. Living in a botanical garden in a rainforest is a new and unique experience for many people.

About the owner: Over the past eight years I have been the steward of these remarkable botanical gardens in Hana Maui. For over 30 years I have been a serial green business entrepreneur, developing innovative companies growing algae for green food supplements in 30 countries and building beautiful bamboo homes in the Hawaiian Islands. I also own with my brothers a 150 acre farm and forest near Olympia Washington, the first family forest in the Pacific Northwest to sell forest carbon offsets in the US voluntary market. I am a documentary filmmaker, and have produced a series of dvds.
Why the Owner Chose Hana:
I fell in love with this beautifully planted botanical garden in Hana. Over 40 years ago the original owner planted 100 kinds of palm trees from seeds collected from all over the world, calling it a love garden. Over the years, many exotic ornamental trees and tropical fruit trees were planted all over the property. Now lawns and pathways weave through these magical gardens.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Staying here is great for a couple or small family. It has generous space for multiple families for gatherings and reunions. Retreat groups come and stay for a week. Hana Gardenland is a perfect model for eco-tourism, where guests and visitors can roam the botanical gardens and learn about plants thriving in the Hana Maui ecosystem, enjoying tropical fruit in season along the way.
