  • A Most Satisfying Vacation Experience

"We arrived at night to Casa Escuela Bilingue to be greeted by the housekeeper, Sylvia and to a beautifully lit interior courtyard. Sylvia was so helpful, even did our wash on the day she cleaned the house. Our beds were comfy. The bedrooms were spacious and well kept as well as beautifully decorated with quality Mexican art, pottery and very comfortable furniture. The house is extremely roomy with 3 large patio areas and a private deck off of the master bedroom. We loved the use of those pierced metal globes and stars for lighting. Everything looked special and festive at night. This is an old property with a very well tended yet overgrown feeling in the gardens. It was our little oasis. Our family came for the Dia de los Muertos week and found the location to be surprisingly quiet for being on a busy street. The alley that you go down seemed to buffer the street noise. Everything we needed was a walk away, yet cabs were very accessible when we wanted one. Being in San Miguel during the week prior to Dia de los Muertos was an excellent time to see the town at its festive best and to immerse ourselves in the traditions surrounding this very Mexican holiday. The celebrations went on for 3 nights and during the day the whole town was decked out in papel picado, cempasuchiles and calaveras. There was music everywhere and a feeling of exuberant preparation permeated the plazas and mercados. We would love to rent this house again. Definitely a high recommend."

  • Good value for the money

"We stayed for two months (January and February) at Pila Seca and for the most part enjoyed our stay. I agree with other reviewers that the kitchen and sitting area were smaller than expected. The bedrooms were a good size as were the bathrooms. Water pressure was good and the water was hot if you let the taps run for a while. Having the TV in the downstairs bedroom was awkward as there were no comfortable chairs to sit on. During the day the traffic is quite noisy as the house is located at a main junction between Pila Seca and Pila Seca prolongacion. On a positive note it gave us a view of Mexican culture: the music from the gas truck, the knife sharpener whistling, and the ringing of the garbage truck bell not to mention all the interesting people walking by. It was quieter at night except for a couple of nights when the neighborhood club Don Quixote had a party and the music blasted out until 1 am. As far as the appliances were concerned, all of them worked well, as did the heaters when it was cold at night. Lynda and Lucha were both great in looking after our requests. We had internet connection problems because I had a MacAir and couldn't connect. They changed providers so that we would have service and Lucha and her daughter were helpful in setting it up. I also commend the gardener Jose and housekeeper Lupita who looked after the property well. Jose was very obliging and brought us water on request as we couldn't carry it up the stairs. The terrace was pleasant to sit on except when the next door shop was spraying varnish on furniture and the smell floated up to the terrace. The views from the terrace, especially the top one were lovely. The walk to centro was about 15 minutes. My partner is 79 and managed quite well. We had some trouble at first because of adjusting to the altitude. The walk is slightly uphill so it's a fairly good workout. If you turn slightly left and go down prolongacion Pila Seca to a gate you will come to a charming walkway where Life Path Retreat centre is. It's an easy way to get to Zacateras and Ancha de San Antonio where the Institute de Allende is along with many good restaurants and bus stops where you can catch a bus to Mega. The location was very central so that you could walk to points of interest easily and restaurants like MexFran and Hechos, both of which are very good. All in all, we enjoyed our fifth stay in San Miguel."

  • BEHIND THE DOOR A NEW WORLD AWAITS

"What a wonderful property. Perfectly located with every creature comfort you could ask for. The owners are a true renaissance couple. Every recommendation they offered was spot on, from restaurants, to area attractions and specialty shops. We couldn't have enjoyed our stay more and I'm sorry we can't add more stars to the rating. This was not our first trip to the beautiful town of San Miguel, nor will it be our last-but I now can't imagine staying anywhere else when we return. Thank you for a great start to 2014."
