About this property
Stunning Sea Views, Beautiful Country Cottage, Hot-Tub | Ravenscar, North Yorks
Watch boats go by and soak up the stunning coast and country views from the hot tub, or relax under a star-studded night sky, enjoying the splendid isolation Lantern Cottage has to offer.
Exceptional one-bed detached barn conversion set in a spectacular rural and coastal location in the North York Moors National Park and on the Yorkshire Heritage Coast.
Lantern Cottage has been exquisitely converted to provide the perfect holiday accommodation for two whilst maintaining many original features such as vaulted ceilings, original beams and exposed stone walls.
THE GARDEN
The private lawned garden has a hot tub, dining area and patio area, all with uninterrupted views of the Yorkshire coast, taking in Scarborough’s North Bay and Medieval castle, Filey Brigg, the white chalk of Bempton cliffs down to the famous lighthouse at Flamborough Head over 20 miles away.
THE COTTAGE
Inside, the cottage has a fully equipped oak Farmhouse kitchen with range cooker and integrated appliances, wood-burning stove in original brick fireplace, a large double-ended whirlpool bath – perfect for two, king size bed in beautiful en-suite bedroom, antique dining table and chairs, large Chesterfield-style corner sofa, window seats, wi-fi throughout and Smart TV. And with underfloor heating in every room, a roaring fire and a toasty hot-tub, the cottage is also a perfect cosy retreat for the winter months and the festive period.
LOCATION
So-named after the smugglers reputed to have signalled out to sea from the property, Lantern Cottage sits 100 yards back from the cliff-top in a five acre coastal plot alongside a late Georgian farmhouse which has been a prominent local sea- and landmark for centuries. The cottage is surrounded by National Trust farmland pasture, hay-meadows and brier abundant with wildlife such as Roe deer, badgers, foxes, hares, barn owls, hawks and many increasingly rare birds.
RAVENSCAR
The cottage is situated at the end of a long country lane in Ravenscar in the parish of Staintondale. Ravenscar is a small cliff-top coastal village half-way between Scarborough and Whitby known for its spectacular views of Robin Hoods Bay, Grey and Common seal colonies on the beach below the village and it’s ‘Dark Skies’ star-gazing. It is also home to a National Trust Visitor and Information Centre, a welcoming Country Hotel providing food and refreshment throughout the day, a tea-room and an honesty shop.
WALKING AND CYCLING
The area around the Cottage is criss-crossed with old footpaths and green lanes. Coastal, inland and moorland paths lead to a range of different local destinations including pubs and tearooms, quiet beaches and secluded coves, woodland glades and nature reserves. A longer walk or bike ride crosses stunning coastal scenery to arrive at the popular tourist destination of Robin Hoods Bay, the terminus of the Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk.
The disused Scarborough to Whitby railway line known as the 'Cinder track' passes close by the cottage and is popular with walkers and cyclists, offering traffic-free exploration of the beautiful landscape and charming villages along the line.
The Cleveland Way National Trail (opened in 1969) passes in front of the cottage providing spectacular cliff-top walks to destinations up and down the coast.
Ravenscar is also on the North York Moors National Park's long-distance Moors-to-Coast cycle network which offers a varied series of moorland, forest and coastal circuits.
BY CAR
By car, there are hotels, gastro-pubs and eateries within ten minutes’ drive of the cottage. And a little further away is the picturesque fishing village of Robin Hoods Bay, the historic fishing town of Whitby with its famous Abbey and the bustling Spa town of Scarborough.
In and around the National Park there is much to see and do with visitor centres, museums and galleries, theatre and music, the Great Yorkshire Forest at Dalby and the North York Moors Heritage Steam Railway all surrounded by beautiful moorland scenery and pretty villages.

Second stay at this lovely secluded cottageStay just as wonderful as the first time Absolutely beautiful views to relax and enjoy from your very private hot tub perhaps enjoying a glass of your complimentary fizz
Beautiful little cottage - the underfloor heating and wood burner made it very cosy in January. Having a bottle of champagne on ice when we arrived was a lovely touch. Hosts were very responsive and there were detailed instructions for arrival and departure
A fantastic property maintained to a high standard. Very peaceful and tranquil location looking out to sea. The host provides details of some lovely walks along the coastline and to local places to eat and drink. For peace and quiet in lovely surroundings we would highly recommend.
A bit of tranquil paradise
Great hosts totally unobtrusive but appear to have pre thought of everything to make your stay special
Stunning views great walks on your doorstep
Great cottage with impressive facilities. Hot tub was the icing on the cake. Really well equipped kitchen and owner very helpful. Wood burner was a bonus. Would highly recommend.
Great cottage just as described. down a long country lane we enjoyed the isolation and the local walks. Very informative information provided by the owners about the nearby areas. Hot tub fantastic after a days walking.
We had a great week at Lantern Cottage. The place is exactly as described, right by the coast (with lovely walks along the Cleveland Way), really quiet when just relaxing at the cottage and with great amenities. We would definitely go back and I am not sure we have ever thought that before!!
