Beautiful home in Oaxaca
My husband and I stayed for 2 weeks. We were very comfortable and really enjoyed sitting on the terrace at night with the city lights twinkling on the mountains in front of us. Truly a panorama. Anthony and Sam were amazing to work with and were there to help us in any way that was needed. We were sad to leave and would return. Only caution would be for anyone who can’t make it up a long flight of stairs to get to the unit. We had no trouble.
enjoyed our stay, lived up to expectations
found it a great spot to stay for 2 couples. nice outdoor space with view that was well used. comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, quiet at night. property mgr lives downstairs and was very responsive. only slight drawback was travel time to centro which we did not mind doing for the week we were there but something to be aware of.
Thank you so much for the kind review. I just wanted to clarify for readers who may be confused by "travel time to centro" that the reviewer is referring to walking time to the zocolo not taxi time. Most people walk to the zocolo in about 15 minutes and a taxi is literally 2 minutes.
Fine time in Oaxaca
Four of us thoroughly enjoyed a wonderfully fascinating city and Anthony’s place was the perfect headquarters for us. It was very comfortable and the delightful outdoor spaces allowed us to appreciate the great climate and beauty of Oaxaca.
Our stay in the apartment was a delight from beginning to end.
We just loved the flat. It is incredibly spacious and, due to its clever design, the outside areas seem to merge with the living room to enhance the feeling of space yet further. The apartment faces due south and so there is sun all day which was a happy bonus.
As many others have commented the views from the terrace are mesmerising. The view is enhanced by the sounds of the neighbourhood below. These sounds were never intrusive but instead made us feel as though we truly felt part of the local neighbourhood. Everyone we met on our walks to the centre of the town were delightful and we were greeted by local residents with warmth and considerable courtesy.
The flat is very well equipped and we were able to self cater with ease, finding specialised kitchen equipment which I would not normally expect in a holiday apartment; for example an electric juicer, a measuring jug, etc. The house was impeccably clean on our arrival and well provided for in terms of toiletries, kitchen paper etc.
Anthony and his family could not have been more hospitable or helpful; they looked after our every need. If we had a query, Anthony's response was almost instantaneous. We particularly welcomed his flexibility about the checking in time and also providing a cot as we had a young baby with us.
Our 15 days in the flat were indeed, "just perfect" and we would all like to extend our thanks to Anthony and his family.
The host and his wife were very helpful. We did not realize that the apartment would not be serviced/ cleaned during our stay.
The apartment is in an interesting neighborhood. It’s a convenient walk down hill to the Cathedral and city center, but would be a challenge for those who have difficulty climbing hills or using steps.
It provided a taste of local living with sounds of the gas supplier, drinking water supplier and local bread vendor calling out each morning. We didn’t realize that we were responsible for working directly with the drinking water vendor, but Anthony took care of us right away when we pointed out that we were out.. We learned upon arrival that we were to take the trash down to the street when we heard the trash truck. We never did hear the trash truck during our 6 days in the apartment.
The apartment is in an area full of stray dogs. None of them troublesome except for their feces on sidewalks and streets. Watch where you walk.
There is a cafe brujula just down the street for morning coffee and evening music. Very nice.
The apartment kitchen was not really set up for use. The utensils and pans were tired and felt unclean. The listing had indicated a washer and dryer. When we asked about using them we were told that the washer might not work. There are fluff and fold services not too far from the apartment.
We had problems with mosquitos each evenings, but enjoyed using the terrace.
The apartment was just fine for our group.
I was truly saddened and mystified by this review. When I spoke to Martha she gave me the impression that she loved the place. Firstly, cleaning is available as many time a week as desired. Cleanings are US$16 each. It was not the guest's responsibility to work with the water vendor. They were low on water when there should have been 3 extra bottles. Their water delivery was accidentally sent upstairs and the problem was solved within minutes. They did not go a single second without water. Most baffling is the suggestion that the kitchen isn't set up for use. There is a full sized microwave, a six burner stove, a full sized oven, a 27 cu ft side by side refri/freezer, 2 juicers, toaster, blender, a regular coffee maker, a French press coffee maker, a deep fryer, cutting knives, steak knives, all utensils and more. All clean. I personally checked the pots and pans after this review and found that they were in fact getting old so I replaced them with all new which I would have done for these guests had anyone let me know they were unhappy with them. My policy is to fulfil any reasonable request. Oaxaca has lots of stray dogs that are especially bad during October mating season. The dogs are no worse in our neighborhood than any other family neighborhood. The ad does not say "washer and dryer" even though there is a washer and dryer. I list just a dryer only because Oaxaca is always in a state of drought even during rainy season due to bad infrastructure and all buildings are on a cistern system to collect water which is sent by the city once every 15 days. Oaxaqueños often receive water conservation pleas from city managers.. For this reason I encourage people to use one of the two fluff and folds that are within 100 yards of the apartment. Both bedrooms are screened. The indoor/ outdoor design of the living space makes screening impossible but the areas can be fully closed off with sliding doors if someone wishes. There are no more mosquitoes in our area than any other in Oaxaca de Juarez. Lastly, it is impossible for me to take care of problems if I don't know there are any. I asked on two different occasions, as I do will all my guests, how they were doing and if they were in need of anything. By the response, I was confident that they were extremely happy. If I had known otherwise, I'd have taken steps to remedy anything within my power.
