About Kevin P Ward

I was raised overseas, attended Harvard, and worked as a creative director in NY for Apple , IBM, Silicon Graphics, and other early tech companies. On the NGO side, I designed the online face of RFK Jr's Riverkeeper and Waterkeeper Alliance.

After many years on the East Coast, my family and I headed to the Aspen area. (Where else can you find wildlife, endless outdoor activities, and rugged beauty combined with the cultural and intellectual depth of a big city? ) Upon arriving, I founded the Aspen Science Center, focused on STEM education and outreach. ACES, our gifted minority summer program, physics BBQs, and Physics Cafes are well-attended institutions in the valley. Our paradisical ranch, close to the wilderness as well as the hustle and bustle of Aspen, lent itself perfectly to raising two wonderful, engaged, multifarious daughters, who are now off to college. Having enjoyed B&Bs while touring through Europe, I thought it would be fun to offer this unique wild/civilized experience to visitors ( and their animals). Let's see!

Rustic Charm

  • 5 of 5

Perfect get away spot. Cabin is rustic and close to nature. The dogs are super friendly, and the goats are a "hoot". Perfect relaxation spot if you are animal people, and enjoy a spot off the beaten path.

This is great for kids who want to enjoy farm animals!

  • 1 of 5

Cleanliness is very important to me and I just couldn’t enjoy myself with rat feces on the mantle, in the corners of the house and a few drops on the sofa. The owner explained it’s not the Marriott. I spent an hour cleaning the kitchen and then resolved to find another place after our daughter had an asthma attack. Unfortunately, our one night stay cost me over $500 because I will had to pay his “cleaning fee”.

Ranch Glamping

  • 5 of 5

We stayed five nights at the Painted Pony Ranch. The scenery is all you imagine when thinking abut a western frontier ranch. The house was interesting, with open concept and one glass wall allowing us to enjoy the views. I am rating this place as five stars because it was represented accurately. We visited with our dog and came for hiking and biking so the ranch was perfect for us. I am mentioning this because this setting might not be a five star experience for every VRBO participant. It is exactly how Kevin represented it - it is glamping. The beds were comfortable and the bedding and towels were clean. There was a projection TV, stereo and WiFi. There was grill available for us to use and the kitchen was sort of equipped enough to cook and make a meal. But the cleanliness of the house was lacking. Also, if you stay at the ranch you need to be ok with four dogs visiting you frequently and curiously peaking through the door.

Kevin was very nice and responsive; quick to respond to every question. We would definitely stay there again. Thank you.

Such a sweet, quiet sanctuary...

Thank you so much! This spot is such a lovely little sanctuary. Quiet, easygoing atmosphere, incredible views... felt right at home. And of course the friendly canine greeting committee. So happy to have found it. Thanks again!

Warm, cozy spot in Colorado mountains

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time at The Painted Pony Ranch. The house had everything we needed for our weekend stay. Great sunlight and full kitchen amenities, which was key for us. Very comfortable and incredibly attentive owner and on site manager. We would definitely return.

Didn’t Love It, Didn’t Hate It

  • 3 of 5

Overall the place was decent for the price in the Snowmass/Aspen area. We realized based on the description that it was not going to be a hotel experience. However, the property overall was not very clean (like a lot of dust and cobwebs). There was also an unusually large amount of dog waste all over the lawn. (We realize it’s a ranch, but it was a lot.). We feel like the pictures on the VRBO website definitely make the property look nicer than it was in person. There just seemed to be an overall need for upkeep. We enjoyed our time, but probably wouldn’t stay here again.

It would be shorter to list what is NOT available to the enterprising traveller. Name any outdoor sport (extreme or not)--odds are you will find a world-class version of it here. As for culture and events--Food & Wine? Check. Aspen Ideas Festival? Sure. Aspen Jazz festival? Of course. Aspen Music Festival? Yep, for 30 years. Great restaurants? Absolutely. This is a chance to enjoy all of the activities in the Roaring Fork valley from a centrally-located, serene 6-acre boutique ranch.
