Take a leisurely stroll around the 1/2 mile track, enjoy a heart pumping game of soccer, throw some Frisbee or fly a kite - all using the equipment available in the Roost's toy box. Alternately, you can cruise the neighborhood on the Roost's bicycles or use their kayaks for a quick trip to Jackson Flats Reservoir.

Prefer relaxing? Then you can enjoy the views of contrasting crimson red and verdant green scenery while you do some grilling on the Roost's flower filled back patio or watch an amazing sunset from the front porch while sipping your favorite cold beverage. Later, you can gather around the outdoor fire pit (wood supplied) for some fireside stories, songs and marshmallow roasting.

When it comes to mealtime, the Roost's roomy kitchen is well stocked for cooking up your family's favorites. Besides the stove/oven combo and microwave, there is a large and small crock pot; an electric griddle for pancakes and such; a food processor for quick prep; a blender for all your frozen favorites; and a dishwasher for quick clean up. There's also a water filter system for your drinking water; a coffee pot; french press; and an electric water pot for tea. As for cooking essentials, the Roost provides a more than adequate supply of pots, pans, lids and bowls to prepare most dishes; along with a nice array of spices and staples like flour, sugars, oils and condiments. Plus, your hosts, George and April, are right next door and are happy to share any ingredients or conveniences they may have on hand. More about the hosts later.

For evening entertainment beyond the TV, you will find a variety of games and puzzles, true old west cowboy apparel and gear for dress up photo fun and a quick craft box. When you are ready to be low key, the HUGE flat screen TV is there. The Roost provides Netflix, a variety of DVD's, an HDMI cable connection for entertainment streamed from your device through the fast 1GBps fiber optic WIFI or there's a Red Box Rental at both of the nearby grocery stores for newer releases.

When you are ready to soothe those tired muscles, enjoy a hot soaking bath in the Master Suite's garden tub with complimentary bath salts. The 50 gallon, quick recovery water heater will ensure everyone has hot water to bathe before bed. Speaking of bed, the romantically decorated Master Suite features a stately king sized poster bed with a luxuriously plush pillow top mattress piled high with pillows and made up with invitingly soft, clean sheets. Cellular shades and black-out curtains make sleeping-in so inviting. The Master bedroom is decorated in a romantic shabby chic decor that is full of soft, inviting textures to make you feel oh so pampered. Enjoy the cozy, mood setting electric fireplace as you wind down from your adventure filled day in the beautiful Southwest Utah.

The second bedroom is all horses and cowboys with denim and cowhide. It is aptly named the Cowboy Room. The semi-firm, queen size Serta pillow-top mattress is piled high with cozy bedding and tons of pillows. The headboard is crafted of Juniper wood made from a tree that shaded a livestock shipping corral in it's former life. Blackout curtains and cellular shades close the world out to let you dream peacefully. A comfortable spotted cowhide chair seconds as a quiet reading nook for an assortment of magazines. The Cowboy room features double closets and is adjacent to the roomy guest bathroom which features a tub/shower combo.

The third bedroom is a bit prickly. Just kidding, it's the Cactus Room featuring artwork of desert landscapes. It has a couch-like trundle bed, again piled high with pillows. The trundle converts into two firmer standard twin size beds which will comfortably accommodate adults as well as children. There's a bookshelf filled with intriguing books and magazines about cowboys, the wild west, and all that Utah has to offer, as well as some blacksmithing books that feature the owner's work. The cabinets in the Cactus room contain some of the funnest family games, quick crafts and puzzles around!

The fourth sleeping option is a couch that converts to a double bed located in the office area off to the side of the living room and kitchen. This sunny spot is perfect for enjoying your morning coffee or an afternoon nap. The office area includes a desk that is outfitted with a charging station, phone for local calls and our insider's guide to Kanab and the surrounding area. You are sure to enjoy the Roost's fiber optic internet speed of 1GBps - a rarity for a small town like Kanab.

The West facing dining room seats eight and provides gorgeous views of the red rocks and lush green surroundings. A separate breakfast bar has seating for three. The pub height, back patio table seats six with additional seating in two areas including an the outdoor fire pit that's perfect for campfire songs and roasting marshmallows or just soaking in varying hues of color the sky and red rock cliffs try on as the sun sets. If you prefer to dine out, downtown Kanab is just 2 miles away and offers some unique as well as many familiar dining choices for your pleasure.

The Kanab Red Rock Roost has central air conditioning and heat, ceiling fans in every room, and an extra large washer and dryer for guest's convenience. Kanab's city water is of good quality but the Roost also has a filtered drinking water system for discerning taste buds. It makes the coffee taste wonderful.

Kanab itself is becoming a destination place with many enjoyable activities within a 20 mile radius of the city. New lighted basketball and tennis courts have recently been installed by the city as well as a skateboard and pump track, also lighted. The Kanab City pool is great fun with slides, toddler pool and splash pad. Three new hiking/equestrian trails have recently been installed as has a 17 mile mountain bike trail. Jackson Flat Reservoir is a great fishing spot off shore or with canoes/kayaks. The Reservoir features a 3+ mile paved walking track that encircles it. There are several fun festivals that bring in a variety of excitement throughout the year. Not to mention all the amazing programs that Best Friends Animal Sanctuary offers.

Visit Kanab and stay at the Roost! You'll be glad you did.

About April and George Witzke

George and April fell in love with Kanab 15 years ago when they traveled through on their way to an art show but they never imagined they would live in the quaint, beautiful town. George, a hobbyist turned professional, has been an Artist Blacksmith for over 25 years. One of his most notable projects is the iron railing at the Grand Canyon's Mather Point Amphitheater though he has built many gates, bed frames, pot racks, wine racks, lamps and easily a gazillion hooks through the years.

In 2014, while living in New Mexico, George was offered a partnership opportunity in a blacksmith shop to be located just outside the east entrance into Zion National Park. The concept was to build an open air, public demonstration shop where travelers could enjoy watching the blacksmiths work in the primitive manner the age old craft first began. The blacksmiths in turn, would sell their hand forged ironwork to the tourists in the local trading posts. As tourism is seasonal, they would only be open six months.

One trip to the area renewed George and April's passion for Kanab's beauty and so, they seized the opportunity and soon began constructing the shop.

April has always been an integral part of George's blacksmith business, helping to run the business and work with the clientele. She also has a side business of building protective leather aprons for metal workers but her business is portable so, their adventure began!

The first season was a great success. Back to New Mexico for the off season. Near the end of the second season, George and April found they didn't want to return their remote, ranching corner of New Mexico. Kanab had become their home.

Their home in New Mexico sold quickly which, in turn, meant they had to quickly find a home in Kanab, a very hot and limited real estate market. When they found the Powell property with two homes on one property, they decided they would share Kanab's beauty with others by hosting a vacation rental.

April and George Witzke purchased this house in 2017

Why April and George Witzke chose Kanab

We strive to be excellent communicators; to answer your questions quickly and thoroughly; to clearly and accurately describe our rental home and rules in order to avoid misunderstandings and surprises.

Our priority is to provide you a comfortable, clean home with the conveniences that make staying at a vacation rental over a hotel more than just a financially smart decision. We have tried to anticipate your every need whether it’s plenty of clean towels, an extra blanket, everyday staples in the pantry, plenty of cookware and dinnerware, a first aid kit or just restaurant recommendations, maps and local input about the surrounding area.

We do live next door so can loan you a cup of sugar or quickly address an issue if needed but we respect your right to privacy. Other than to say hello, we will only engage with you when you initiate it.

The Kanab Red Rock Roost is just two miles from the center of downtown Kanab. Besides being in the hub of all the National Parks and Monuments, it is convenient to a variety of restaurants, two grocery stores, numerous shops and galleries, one live performance theater and one movie theater, a work out center and, of course, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

Located right across the street from The Roost is a green, tree filled ten acre city park with plenty of room to stretch, lounge and play! We know you probably don't travel with a soccer ball, Frisbee or kite so, we have a toy box filled with those items and more for our guests to enjoy while here.

The weather in Southern Utah is usually beautiful and mild but there are times when being outside isn't so inviting so, The Roost has an array of board games, puzzles, quick crafts, and good books for our guest to enjoy.

Your hosts, George and April love adventure from kayaking to ATVing, hiking to jet skiing so they are happy to offer whatever insider tips they can about where to go, how to get there and the best deals to be had

What makes this house unique

The Roost is filled with art we have collected and made or had custom made for us over the years. Our choices in artwork reflect the things in life we value, the places we love and it tends to evoke memories of our younger days when we rode horseback working on ranches, guiding hunts and living the fulfilling but tough cowboy lifestyle!

Not a day goes by that we don't tell one another how grateful we are to live in this beautiful area surrounded by God's art. The hues of both earth and sky are constantly changing from sun rise to sun set. And the Roost is perfectly positioned for a panoramic view of it all.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time and this place is fabulous. Thanks for the treats and thank you for your hospitality.

Great place to stay! Warm atmosphere. Clean.

  • 5 of 5

This rental property was great for my family. The house was clean, this is always very important to us when we stay somewhere, second to that, is the bed/bedroom. The king bed has a good mattress, and with the blackout curtains it made sleeping in feel like a vacation. It is everything you expect from the pictures, house is decorated, has laundry room and even the detergent to do all our loads. A stocked kitchen with all cookware, the owner even had a full assortment of baking needs (Flour, oil, sugar...). The location was very nice, the rental has a park right across the street and the host George and April were helpful with all of our questions (attractions, dinning...) and making our visit to Kanab one we will repeat next year. We recommend this property to anyone and plan to return here ourselves.

A Great Place to Stay in Kanab

  • 5 of 5

Our recent stay at the Kanab Red Rock Roost was terrific. This lovely vacation rental has all the amenities one could want. It is well-stocked, quiet, comfortable, and immaculate!

After spending a day in Zion, it was wonderful to return “home” and put our feet up in this special retreat.

Although we didn’t need a thing, April and George are right next door in case something came up. They are wonderful hosts and shared their vast knowledge about Kanab and southern Utah. They made our stay comfortable, enjoyable, easy, and relaxed.

The house is just as described and the cowboy-themed décor of the home blends beautifully with the western location.

The Kanab Red Rock Roost is a delightful place and exceeded our expectations. Our visit ended all too soon and we hope to return.

Owner's Response: Karen, it was so good to have you and Bill stay with us. We enjoyed sharing this beautiful area with you and look forward to your next visit. By the way, we learned that the road to Toroweap has been greatly improved due to mining traffic so you may want to get your own photos at that awesome canyon overlook next time you're here.

Charming and immaculate!

  • 5 of 5

This home is right by the park in the wonderful town of Kanab, Utah. We could drive any direction and arrive at an amazing scenic destination.

The decor is charming and very well done; like stepping into an old West country homestead! And everything is super clean.

The hosts are very friendly and yet respectful of their guests' privacy.

And the house being wheelchair accessible is a huge plus.

We would highly recommend this flawless accommodation for your group, too!
