About the property

Near Florence & Siena, Sleeps 6+2, Glorious Hill Views.

Architecturally stunning house, protected by the Italian Ministry for Culture for its historic and cultural significance, sleeps 8.

Set in the idyllic Chianti countryside between Florence (c.26km) and Siena (c.40km). The pretty market town of Greve-in-Chianti, with a wide range of shops, cafés and restaurants, is just 3km away.

A former chapel, with medieval origins, and attached stone farmhouse, have recently been converted by a leading Italian architect and featured in Architectural Digest magazine. They sit at the heart of a tiny and ancient fortified hamlet, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, woodland and open fields. The house enjoys serene vistas all around, stretching to the Apuan Alps 70 miles away. Leonardo da Vinci was inspired by the scenery here in his landscape painting.

The house is far more than just a rental property: it is a home, lovingly decorated by skilled Italian fresco artists, furnished with a stylish mix of antique and contemporary pieces collected from our travels all over the world. There are hand-painted Italian ceramics, hand-made glass, local wood and wicker work, the latest in Italian design bathrooms - beautiful objects that reflect a life well lived. The rooms are filled with flowers, fragrant soaps, books, CDs, sheet music, board games, films...and other simple pleasures to reflect 'la dolce vita'. There is an 1885 Bluthner grand piano in the main sitting room.

The cultural sites of Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Montepulciano, Greve and the Chianti hill towns, medieval castles and wine estates are all nearby.

There are lovely outdoor swimming pools at Greve & seven interconnected pools at Quercegrossa.

Around the house are beautiful and extensive walking trails.

The area is very popular with cyclists and many itineraries are available.

Chianti is known for its outstanding wines and fine local cuisine.

House: 330sq.metres (total), on 2 main levels plus taverna.

Ground floor:

Impressive main sitting room in former church, leads to lovely covered loggia outside;

1 study-bedroom with double sofa-bed; shower room/toilet;

Second lounge/dining room (with table for 6), double doors to courtyard garden;

Farmhouse kitchen with large open fireplace, dishwasher, microwave;

Utility room (washing machine, dryer); guest toilet;

Lower ground:

Large taverna, with wine racks and dining table for 8;

First floor:

2 double bedrooms, 1 with en-suite shower room,

1 twin bedroom; guest bathroom (with shower).

In addition to the courtyard garden, there is a covered loggia for sitting outside, and a few minutes walk around vineyards takes you to the property’s field with fruit frees (suitable for ball games, etc.) and hillside woodland.

About Convertoie Bookings

The owner speaks English, Italian, some French, and has lived in Italy for many years.

Convertoie Bookings purchased this house in 2011

Why Convertoie Bookings chose Firenze (Florence) Province

The extensive views here (reaching to the Apuan Alps 70km away) inspired Leonardo da Vinci's landscapes. The setting is idyllic and timeless, the light ever-changing, each season with its magic. The house, being a former church and canonic with medieval origins, is architecturally stunning and historic, yet with all mod cons. The place combines utter peace and tranquillity with easy access to some of the greatest cultural sites in the world.

What makes this house unique

Views and idyllic Chianti landscape, architectural features, stylish and high-quality decor, some of the best wines in Europe and great Tuscan food a stone's throw a way. Florence, Siena, art, history... What's not to like?

Guestbook comments from the owner

The property of the villa was breathtaking. Situated amongst typical Tuscan scenery in a historically significant location, Le Convertoie was a pleasure to stay at. We had a wonderful time waking up to the early calls of the roosters and finishing each day sipping the local wine! The location was splendid, for any Tuscan destination was short car ride away. Greve-in-Chianti, was also nearby and provided a great home base for travel. Kate was an amazing host and made sure that we were most comfortable with her house! Our stay here was unforgettable and hopefully we can return soon!

Italian Idyll in an exceptional place

  • 5 of 5

Four long term friends sought an exceptional experience in the Italian countryside -- but didn't want to be too far from Florence or Siena. Le Conventoie was the perfect location, and the house itself proved to be the best mix of charm, comfort and the ability to be as private or as social as the two couples chose. Pictures only hint at the beauty and quality of the renovation, and don't do justice to the exquisite terrain that surrounds the place (great for hiking). The bed and bathrooms were immaculate and well appointed, and everything was in perfect working order. The kitchen was a welcome gathering place at the end of the day, where wine and ingredients were swapped over many laughs (on the days we didn't indulge at fabulous restaurants either in Greve or on our day trips). The ownership is so professional and so good at communication that nothing felt left to chance -- important in a country where our command of the language was pretty rudimentary (but improved after some of aforementioned vino). In short, the trip felt too short, the departure was bittersweet, but the anticipation of our next visit will sustain us over a long cold winter in New York. We cannot say enough how heartily we can recommend Le Conventoie and the charming town of Greve in Chianti.

Absolutely Stunning

  • 5 of 5

I and a group of 4 friends stayed at La Convertoie for two weeks in July and I could,not have been happier. The property was stunning -- we all had a few moments when we shook ourselves and wondered if we were really sitting in a centuries old church... It really was such a beautiful property, and the inside of the house is so beautifully and carefully appointed. We spent many mornings and evenings sitting outside.

Kate was such an accommodating and helpful host. We did so many of the trips and activities she recommended, and were so pleased with our time spent. She was so quick to help out whenever I had questions or problems. Thanks too, to Marco and Emilia, who gave us some lettuce from the garden and home made tomato sauce when we missed the closing of the coop in Greve!

Overall, a fantastic visit!

Blissful week at Le Convertoie

  • 5 of 5

I was recently priviledged to stay at Le Convertoie for a week. Kate was a wonderful host who responded quickly to our booking request and provided useful local information and maps as well as showing us around the property on arrival. The photos do not lie, Le Convertoie is spacious and well appointed. The kitchen has all the impliments you could need for cooking and entertaining. The property even has its own Chapel/ music room.

We were two couples and there was more space than we needed. As the weather was warm we had the choice of dining on the back terrace or front verandah, both with excellent views.

A car is essential to get to the property and to tour the area. There are plenty of interesting hilltop villages in the surrounding hills and Kate's recommendations in restaurants were spot on.

Loved the week. Did I mention the fantastic Chianti Classico wine produced by the neighboring farmer and the fireflys in the surrounding woods.

We hope to return soon.

This home far surpassed anything we could have imagined. It was absolutely gorgeous! We stayed there for six nights, and wished we could have stayed longer. Kate, the owner, was incredibly helpful as we planned our vacation. She answered all of our questions immediately, and gave us many great ideas of things to do and places to go. One of the highlights was the cooking lesson by Gaia and Maria that was held inside the kitchen of the home. Kate also made dinner reservations for the first night of our arrival in the cute town of Greve. The pictures on the website of the home made it look beautiful, but they just did not do it justice. Obviously the beauty and charm of the home can only really be enjoyed in person. We will definitely be back some day!

Exceeded our long-held expectations

  • 5 of 5

We had originally booked to stay at this sumptuous villa in 2013. Alas illness forced us to cancel that trip. Kate was gracious and helpful with the cancellation and we stayed in touch in the intervening years, hoping that one day we would actually make it to Le Convertoie. We finally got there for 9 days in April as the centrepiece of a 6 week European vacation.

What a breathtaking home! From the historic cellar to the well appointed kitchen, to the various lounge areas, the indoor and outdoor dining settings, the luxurious bedrooms and bathrooms and finally the unique and breathtakingly beautiful church, the quality of the restoration, finishes and furnishings is superb and totally sympathetic to the history of this place.

But it's not just about the bricks, mortar and furniture. It's about the experiences and the memories we created during our stay. Sunsets under the church loggia drinking Le Convertoie wine; listening to Bach on the surround-sound stereo or playing the piano in the acoustically perfect church; walking the historic Roman trail from Le Convertoie to Greve for a gelato; cooking a steak from Dario Cecchini's famous butchery in Panzano on the BBQ; playing with Marco & Emelia's puppies - these are the experiences Le Convertoie facilitates.

Acknowledging that there are many gorgeous properties in Tuscany, you would be hard pressed to find one with more character and with such splendid hosts.

Kate and Francesco, we cannot thank you enough for sharing your gorgeous country home with us. Not only that, the advice you offered during our planning phase and your patience with our endless stream of questions was much appreciated. We also enjoyed Kate and Francesco's local knowledge and expertise in the history of music, art and culture in the form of a day tour of various sites in and around Florence.

Others have mentioned neighbours Marco & Emelia whom we would also like to thank for their friendship forged during our short stay. Do try Marco's wine and olive oil, you won't be disappointed!

We have told so many friends about our wonderful stay at Le Convertoie and now we wish we had kept it a secret as they are starting to book it out! We know they will enjoy it as much as we did.

Buon viaggio!

Le Convertoie was Special

  • 5 of 5

It is really hard to put into words what a fantastic property Le Convertoie is. We stayed for 10 days with 4 of our dearest friends and had a marvelous time. The historic nature of the home (the castle and taverna were built several hundred years before Columbus set sail for America) along with its beautiful restoration and decoration made this a stay we will never forget. Kate (owner) is a wonderful lady. She met us upon our arrival, gave us a tour of the home and also gave us many suggestions for things to see and do in the area. The home is situated such that there are excellent views all around. The hiking trails give a special view of the home from below. We did have Gaia and Maria come over one night to cook a true Tuscan meal and if was delicious. We really enjoyed traveling to the many hill towns and wineries that the area is noted for. We also visited Siena, Pisa, Lucca and spent a day in Florence. Part of our group did a one day bike ride which ended in San Gimignano. This town was a favorite of ours. We found numerous excellent restaurants in the Greve in Chianti and Panzano in Chianti areas. We did enjoy just driving in the beautiful countryside even though the Italian drivers and winding roads can sometimes be a challenge. Marco, Emelia ( and dogs Zoe and Achille) were great neighbors. We sampled several bottles of Marco's excellent wine. Thank you, Kate, for sharing your unbelievable home with us. It is a trip we will never forget. It far exceeded our expectations.
