The island of Tenerife was formed by volcanic activity about twelve million years ago. This is due to a hotspot in the earth's mantle, which is building up a chain of islands due to its activity, while the African plate is drifting northeast over this point in the interior of the earth. The geologically oldest parts of the island are the Anaga mountains in the far north-east, the Teno mountains in the north-west and small areas (Bandas del Sur) in the far south.
Younger is the volcanic massif in the center of the island, which is occupied by a 12 by 17 kilometer caldera called Las Cañadas. The highest mountain in Spain rises from it, the 3715 meter high Pico del Teide.

Like all the other islands in the Canary archipelago, Tenerife has mild temperatures all year round due to the north-east trade winds that develop south of the horse latitudes.
