Set in the heart of the vibrant and lively town of Kirkcudbright on the Banks of the River Dee, Auchengool House is a very special place for a group of friends or family to meet up and enjoy a memorable holiday.
A professional, commercial interior designer has been commissioned to create a stunning ambience at Auchengool House which really succeeds in echoing the charm and artistry of Kirkcudbright. Complimenting the interior of Auchengool House is a charming private rear garden with the remains of the 16th century MacLellan Castle as your backdrop, where you can enjoy dining al-fresco or just sit and relax in the bubbling hot tub, perfect after a day exploring the stunning area. Since the late 19th century, Kirkcudbright has been renowned as an artists’ colony, with artists such as Jessie M King, E A Hornel and Charles Oppenheimer making it their home.
Today it is known as “The Artists’ Town” of Dumfries and Galloway, and in 2018 the Kirkcudbright Galleries opened, which showcases world class art as well as the work of the local artists. This lovely town on the Estuary, still has a busy and bustling harbour where you can watch the fishing boats return with their catch. Stroll through the town and visit the famous Broughton House, once home of E. A. Hornel or experience the Arts and Crafts Trail. Throughout the year the town hosts a diverse range of annual events from Farmers’ Markets, Country Fair, the Jazz Festival, Festival of Light, the Riding of the Marches and of course the spectacular Tattoo, an event not to be missed. With some lovely little shops dotted around the town and fabulous places to eat the town is an ideal location to base yourself while exploring this delightful area. A must for children and adults alike is a visit to the Dark Sky Planetarium a state-of-the-art interactive science and space themed experience for everyone or you just may prefer the Dark Art Gin Distillery next door!
There are also many varied and interesting walks which you can take from the town, from scenic coastal walks to forest trails. With sailing, swimming, riding, fishing, golf, boat trips and water sports close by, there is something for everyone. Warmed by the Gulf Stream there are many beautiful gardens to visit, including Threave Gardens (National Trust for Scotland). Close to the Galloway Forest Park, the first Dark Sky Park in the UK, and central to 5 of the 7 Stanes, it is a popular location for cyclists and mountain bikers.. 1 step to entrance.

We were a group of 7 friends looking for somewhere to relax and de stress, and we got exactly that. We had a wonderful weekend of comfort and enjoyed walking around the local area and the local shops. The locals were very friendly, and our host Alan was wonderful. He was very welcoming, happy to help during our stay, and we took on board his recommendations for local establishments, and he was right they were great. Would recommend this wonderful home and thoughtful host to anyone.

Auchengool House was the perfect place for our family birthday gettogether.
Auchengool House was the perfect place for our family birthday gettogether. Four generations all enjoyed a very comfortable stay in Alan's beautiful home. Excellent, well appointed accommodation and the hot tub was the icing on the cake. Alan was a very welcoming, attentive host and the goodies left in the kitchen for us were much appreciated. Perfect location in the heart of Kirkcudbright but remember to book if you want to eat out as availability can be limited. We would have no hesitation in recommending Auchengool House - can't wait to return.

Auchengool House was a fantastic base for our long weekend in Kirkcudbright.
Auchengool House was a fantastic base for our long weekend in Kirkcudbright. It is a stylish and comfortable home. Very well equipped and the welcome basket of locally sourced edible goodies from the owner was much appreciated. The hot tub was a fun addition to the beautiful garden which has the backdrop of the castle. There was plenty to do in the area - walks, National Trust properties ( Threave Estate and Broughton House ), Dark Art gin tour, shops, restaurants and the monthly farmers market. We would highly recommend Auchengool House.
