Beachside Cottage Idyllic Situation, Stunning Views Over Morecambe Bay & Lakes.
Spacious property in a stunning location! the cottage has a cosy lounge with woodburner and large sunroom looking out over bay. 2 double beds (1 with en suite) and 1 single, lounge with smart TV, WiFi and wood burner, fully equipped kitchen, 2nd shower room with shower cubicle, hand basin and WC, large conservatory with amazing views out over Morecambe Bay, lobby with wash machine, night storage heaters and convector heaters. Fabulous at all times of the year! Extensive private enclosed grounds with seating areas, garden furniture and bird viewing hide. Also elevated seating area with amazing views over the bay and the hills behind. It would be hard to find a more tranquil, beautiful location. The accommodation is all on one level tho there are 4 steps (with handrail) down from the parking area. I am aware we are a bit short of reviews at the minute - for which there are 2 reasons: more than half our bookings are returning guests who book with me directly and so aren’t allowed to leave a review through VRBO and, secondly, I briefly handed the property over to a holiday let agent which was a disaster and secured few bookings. So now I’m back in business with VRBO again and will leave you with an email I’ve just received from returning guests: “Please can you book us …..for a week. You know sometimes you have that happy nostalgia holiday place when you were a kid (mine was Swanage) and your parents return to it time and time again? Well your place has become ours. Both kids are getting older now but its still our go-to. We've always had a different holiday house every year somewhere randomly throughout the UK but yours is the first that has had us coming back again and again and i swear if we won the lottery i'd buy it if you'd sell and we'd live in it for half the year, the peace and quiet is so much needed.....! Anyway, please book us in lol.” Region:The property is secluded but only a 5 min walk from the village of Baycliff which has 2 pubs serving food.; 2 miles from the Manjushri Buddhist Centre and 4 miles from the lively market town of Ulverston with its many festivals - including Lantern, Flag, Music and Dickensian - and excellent shops - independent ones plus the wonderful Booth's supermarket, M&S Food outlet and large Aldi. There is the fascinating Laurel & Hardy museum, a twice weekly street market, Christmas Market alongside the Dickensian festival and a whole programme of festivals throughout the year, including several music festivals, walking and cycling festivals, print makers festival. Ulverston Leisure Centre is on the road from the cottage. The famous Roy's Ices can be found on the road into Ulverston - try flavours you've never heard of before! You can also walk here (about 30mins) along the beach from the cottage. Nearby Barrow in Furness has much of interest including the Dock Museum for a rainy day! Furness Abbey is a stunning example of a Cistercian Abbey - and the cafe is great! Take a ferry over to Piel Island and explore the wonderful (free) National Trust Castle before refreshing yourselves at the pub on the island. Other nearby attractions include the South Lakes Wildlife Park and Brockholes Outdoor Adventure Park. There are plenty of great walks and bike rides from the property itself (including Birkrigg Common with its stone circle.) And all this before you even begin to venture into the Lake District proper!
Loved by bird watchers, dog owners, walkers, families and those seeking peace and quiet. All fuel, electric, bed linen and towels provided. extensive patio paved areas with garden furniture provided, enclosed grounds. Travel cot, high chair available. Well behaved dogs welcomed. Plenty of private, off road space for parking (tho we ask you to stay on the field and drive side of the little bridge). NB: the property is reached down 4 steps down from the parking area - there is a handrail but the cottage itself is all on one level. Favourable rates available - please enquire and discounted rates for whole weeks. Many of our guests are returnees, several come every year - this also explains why we have less reviews than we'd like as reviews are only permitted for bookings through HomeAway.
Bring your wellies if you want to walk out across the sands and don’t want to get wet feet!

This is the most idyllic place. The interior is a bit dated but it adds to the character of the place. Amazing situation right on the beach and amazing walks. We have, and will continue to come here as it’s a place of tranquility, where you can relax and breath

Thank you for this review- we hope to see you again soon!
We were looking for relaxing and thats exactly what we got. Easy to go for a bracing stroll straight onto beach (pebbles and sand when tide out) Successfully tired out a 2 yr old pointer as he ran miles and back along the endless bay sands.Garden large mainly flagged, very dog friendly, and secure. A determined dog could possibly jump the 3 foot gates but on the whole proved escape proofMain house warm and comfortable but spent most time in conservatory with easy chairs and a dining table. Pictures dont do this room justice as it stayed warm and cosy from morning to evening and the tiled floor meant wet dog paws not a problem. Ample room to have dog beds in here for snoozing happy dogs whilst left in peace to admire the views, read or just snooze yourself. Not really a bucket and spade beach, but perfect for collecting shells, walking, and running with dogs. Perfect week (Although could have done without the wind rain and hail) Will definately return if possible.

Thank you so much for this review - you have summed up the cottage and location! I’m glad you had a relaxing week - hope you manage to get back some time

The location was amazing. Secluded with beautiful views...exactly what we wanted. There was a lovely supermarket just a couple of miles away. The property was in reasonable distance from local attractions. Peil Castle and the train to lake Windemere were firm favourites with the kids, as was the beach...right outside the gate! The cottage was clean and had all the facilities required. We look forward to visiting again.
If you want peace, beautiful location this is it,loved it
Stayed mid March cold raining, the heating was on when we got there so we could relax straight away, a lot of thought has gone into making it homely and comfortable. The location is fantastic, we were on the beach at least three times a day, The farmer arms pub is lovely and they welcome dogs too, Overall absolutely loved it would recommend it .Would love to stay there again, bet its amazing in summer time, thank you Rose

Very disappointed, The property needs a complete renovation, not as advertised, don’t rely on reviews as they are not consistent., apparently there have been problems there for many years & have not been put right. Have made a complaint to company advertising this property & said they should check it out as I don’t want any other people rent the property to be disappointed as we were, it needs a complete update.

This was a difficult booking- the guests contacted me after 3 days to say the Cottage was not clean with dust and cobwebs everywhere and a lack of cleaning materials available. As we do not live locally there is a notice in the cottage asking guests to contact the cleaners over any cleaning issues- I said I would ask the cleaner to go straight down to put things right but this was declined.
I offered a partial refund which was accepted and I thought the guests were happy as they didn’t mention it again.
After the end of the stay, the guests contacted VRBO to complain about the cleanliness- they didn’t inform VRBO that I had already given them a refund and negotiated a further payment from VRBO. And then gave me this review!
I’m not sure why they think it’s not as advertised, or why they think people shouldn’t take notice of our reviews! I’m not sure why they think there have been problems for years which have not been put right- there doesn’t seem to be any evidence for this.
We have never pretended that the cottage is fully modernised but think the description is accurate and most people find it clean and comfortable and this is reflected in our reviews.
We realise that sometimes problems can arise when we aren’t near but we are committed to sorting out any difficulties as soon as we are told about them. We are saddened when guests don’t give us the chance to do this.

So good we didn't want to leave
Honestly the quietest place we have ever stopped. Fantastic location on the beach front. And I mean fantastic. No need for a dog lead while staying here. Had such a good time. Can't wait to go back and that's not like us lol. One of the best holidays we've had.
We had a great week here. The property had enough space for the four of us with plenty of room to sit in the conservatory and enjoy the view. The location was amazing, you are literally right on the beach. Ulverston is only a short drive away for provisions or a meal out. Really sad to leave as it was a wonderfully relaxing place to be.
Brilliant cottafe. Next to sea very quite place lovley walks local pub The Farmers in Baycliff .only thing needs a good spring clean inside %and putside
Property and garden would benefit from a little more attention.
Location was brilliant.
No DVD player (as specified).
Doggie heaven and very secure even for smallest of dogs.

So sorry about the DVD player! We recently swapped the TV for a smart TV and I took the DVD player away, thinking there was no need for it!
Enjoyed stay but area was too busy for our tastes though not surprising given it was a bank holiday week. Unfortunately we would not revisit as the steps would be just too difficult for my parents.

Thank you for reviewing our cottage - it’s the first time anyone has said the area was too busy! how unfortunate for you - as you say, it must have been because it was bank holiday and also maybe because there has been such an increase in people trying to get out and about following lockdown. I wonder if you mean down near the cottage (which is usually almost deserted if for no other reason than there is no public parking down there) or the wider area - which is more likely.
I’m sorry you feel your elderly parents would be unable to cope with the steps - as we say in the description, the property is all on one level but there are 4 steps (with handrail) down from the car parking area. I hope your parents were ok while you had your week away.
Everything was fantastic apart from the beach ⛱ that the water never been there , never see anything
Everything perfect, just the sea let us down

The tides are very variable! Sometimes they are right up to the cottage every day, at other times it’s a long way out. Sorry we couldn’t arrange for it to be nearer for you!

Tranquility at its finest!
This was our 2nd visit to Maskel Beach Cottage and it just gets better and better. We returned for my partner's Birthday. I have never stayed anywhere so beautiful where I feel so at home. The walks with the dogs on the beach, the peaceful location, the great nearby pubs to eat, I really cannot praise the whole package enough. My partner and I are booking again for September 2015 and have decided to get married as near to Maskel Beach Cottage as possible! Perfect, perfect, perfect :-)

Perfectly Perfect!
It was our 4th stay and this gem of a cottage and it was so good to return! What a wonderful place to stay! Opening that gate onto Morecombe Bay is bliss, sitting in the conservatory and looking out of an evening is bliss! It's a really comfy home from home place for us. We had a break of 2 and a half years due to buying a motorhome but as soon as we opened that door, we realised how much we missed it! So much so, we booked it again for September before we left.
Thank you Rose and Bob for sharing such a special place, we really do feel at home there and can't wait to return.

Just come back from a wonderful restful holiday at Maskel Beach Cottage. Was very clean and cosy, all very lovely and comfy. Fantastic views and cottage has everything you need. Rose was a wonderful host and provided us with a welcome bottle and all the logs we wanted. Everyone enjoyed the beach being right next to us and so peaceful and quiet, dogs absolutely loved it and have sulked ever since we got back. Would definitely recommend and we will be back. Thank you very much Rose and Bob for sharing your home.

Property is in a beautiful location but needs some serious improvement.
Property is in an excellent location but work needs doing inside & outside of the house, we had a few issues which I communicated to the owner but thought it over priced for the conditions on saying that it could be made lovely & be a little gem.

Fabulous
This was our third visit to Maskel Beach Cottage and it was by far our best visit.....my partner and I decided to get married there this time! What can I say apart from we love the location and the cottage just feels like home from home (but with far better views!). I think it will be very hard to beat the overall package this cottage has to offer. Thank you Rose and Bob for your lovely card and bottle of bubbly for our special day and for giving us the chance to get married somewhere very close to our hearts.

Thank you for choosing our cottage for your special day - we wish you all the best for the future - and, of course, many more happy holidays at Maskel Beach! Rose
Peace..tranquillity..relaxation what more do you want from a holiday....this place has it.
Totally enclosed huge garden space which my dog loved.
It was also a total suntrap which i loved.
Windows open listening to waves on the shore...idyllic.
I adore cows so to have them in the field behind & greeting us each morning was a total bonus....
Walking to Bardsea or other way to Aldingham in mornings with dog to eatch the sunrise...was just bliss.
Couple of issues which lovely owner Rose dealt with quickly & efficiently & was lovely.

I’m pleased you had such a lovely time and hope you might book again some time

If you need some rest and relaxation this is the place to go. The location is fabulous, being so near the water is so calming and our dog was in heaven. The accommodation was warm and cosy and the location was fab. The views are fabulous and I loved sitting in the conservatory when it was raining and listening to the sounds. We didn’t go out much except to walk on the beach, but there is also a wonderful meditation centre just down the road that’s worth a visit - excellent coffee and cakes! We would definitely return. Communication with the owner was excellent all the way through.
The only minor negative was that the dishwasher didn’t really work very well (we were aware of that) and we had to wash all the glasses and pots before we used them because they weren’t clean.

Thanks, Rianna, for your review. I’m so sorry to hear that the dishwasher wasn’t working properly - thank you for making aware of that as we didn’t know. It wasn’t acceptable that you had to wash all the glasses and pots, that’s not what you go on holiday for. If you’d have let me know, I would have asked the cleaner to come down and do them. I’m glad you enjoyed your stay despite that and hope you return one day! Rose
About the host
Hosted by Rose
My husband grew up in nearby Barrow and, as a family we have explored the area with our children for many years. Keen to continue this even when his parents were no longer around, we fell in love with this cottage which we think is in an idyllic location. Although we live more than 200 miles away, we visit whenever we can - our dogs are in their element at the cottage and run for miles across the sands. Our children as adults visit with their friends - taking the opportunity to go for long walks, bike rides, paddling their kayaks and flying kites.
Why they chose this property
We had no intention of purchasing a property but it was one of those moments where we both fell instantly in love with the cottage and location and knew we must have it. We've had no regrets and, besides letting it out, ourselves, family and friends have had many magical holidays at the cottage. The cottage is cosy and quirky and equipped with everything you may need - hopefully! Dogs are safe in the grounds of the property but so near the beach for long walks. You can relax in the privacy of the gardens on sun loungers or choose to sit on the raised decking so you have a stunning view out over the bay.
What makes this property unique
Location, location! stunning views from the conservatory and gardens over Morecambe Bay with the hills of the Lake District in the distance. The seclusion and tranquillity of the cottage - no near neighbours. Pubs (and food) 5 mins walk away, one dog friendly. Vast sands to walk out on (ideal for dogs). Amazing bird life in Morecambe Bay can be viewed from the property. Ideal base for exploring Southern and Western Lake District or just going for walks and bike rides from the property.
