Set in the jungle, above the village and beautiful beach of Matapalo on the Pacific Coast, this house invites you to have a true Costa Rican experience! Even the 4X4 road to the house is fun! Just minutes from the beach, there is an amazing 180 degree view of the ocean. Enjoy the local sightings of toucans, parrots, soaring hawks, several kinds of monkeys, coatis, blue morpho butterflies and many other wildlife visitors from the patio deck, while still being close to lots of activities and unique adventures. Have an action-packed vacation or just lie in the hammock by the pool and read.
The house has an open, comfortable feeling with tile floors and beautiful wood ceilings and doors. The kitchen, dining room and living room all open to each other and the outdoors. Ceiling fans throughout the house keep the cooler mountain air moving. Downstairs there is a master bedroom (queen bed) and connected bathroom, a single bed tucked under the stairway and another full bathroom. Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms (1 w/double bed and single bed and 1 w/queen bed only) and 1 full bathroom with a covered deck for bird watching and sunset cocktails.

We live and work in Walnut Creek, California, east of San Francisco. Two of our children and all of our grandchildren all live in the Bay Area. Our Daughter now lives on the property (in a separate house) and is the on-site property manager.
Owner purchased this Villa in 2003
Why Owner chose Playa Matapalo

Gorgeous view, private, adventure to get to house
Loved the house, view and location. Absolutely must have 4 wheel drive! Very comfortable home, great amenities! Loved taking boogie boards to the beach, used hiking poles for walks, well thought thru as to what makes a vacation comfortable! Becca was very helpful, great recommendations for beaches! The only thing that would make it better would be A/C in all bedrooms. Really only good for 2 couples as I wouldn’t want to put someone in the room w/o A/C
What an awesome place!
We spent 2 weeks here and loved every minute of it. The house is very well equipped, the pool was great to have and the views are spectacular. Becca was attentive to our every need and is awesome to work with. If you are not familiar with some of the Costa Rican roads, it can be intimidating navigating the dirt road leading up to the house. You will need 4 wheel drive but the road is no worse than other properties who offer privacy and the views. We have had up to 9 Toucans perched on a tree right outside of the large patio as well as a pair of green faced parrots. Jungle noises are all part of the experience so bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper. Highly recommended, can't wait to come back next year!
Private, Clean, Breath-taking views and an adventure!
We are 2 families, total of 11 people (4 adults and 7 kids) who stayed at Playa Matapalo for a week in February. You will definitely need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the house, we had no problem renting them in San Jose. We had never driven up a mountain like this, but it was easy after we did it once. We arrived at night (I would recommend trying to get there in the day) and the first thing we saw was the beautiful star-filled sky. It was truly breath-taking to see the night sky with so little light-pollution. The home is very clean and functional. One bedroom and 2 bathrooms are downstairs and 2 bedrooms and a bathroom are upstairs. The kitchen is small, but we made most of our meals for 11 there and we had everything we needed. The ocean, jungle and mountain views from this house are amazing. Toucans woke us in the morning and serenaded the gorgeous sunsets in the evening. Location - The house is about 15 minutes from Dominical (tons of great restaurants, night-life and a healthy grocery store) and about 30 minutes from Quepos and Uvita. We did a lot of exploring and Becca (the host) was an integral part of helping us find some off-the-beaten path destinations. Definitely check out the Aguas Termales Quepos a natural hot springs - it's family-owned, very private and low-key and they will cook you the most amazing meal after you enjoy the warm mineral springs and beautiful river with a natural water slide! Uvita has a great farmers market on Saturdays, which we would highly recommend. We enjoyed Manual Antonio, lots of capuchin monkeys and gorgeous beaches, but it's very touristy and busy. Marino Bellena, Whales Tail, was very beautiful too, would love to come back when the whales migrate there. We would also highly recommend a trip up to the most pristine waterfalls and lunch with Victor, a medicinal farmer. They will cook you an amazing meal with food from their land too. This mountain is intense and we hired a driver, which we would recommend (Becca can help you if you are interested). The kids spent almost every evening in the pool as we listened to the toucans, watched parrots fly by and enjoyed the gorgeous sunsets. We couldn't have asked for more! We had a wonderful trip to Costa Rica, we can't wait to come back and stay at Play Matapalo again!
Thank you for your glowing review. I am so happy you all had such a wonderful vacation. I truly enjoyed meeting you and your families. Please come back soon!
An absolute gem
We spent a week here with two children (ages 10 and 7) in February. We absolutely loved it! The casa is as gorgeous as pictured, right in the heart of the jungle! We saw toucans and parrots out back while having breakfast.
The area is great for beaches, waterfalls, wildlife viewing and great food. Becca was a wonderful host. The house and property are very well maintained.
We would recommend this place to all adventurers!
Thank you Becca for an absolutely memorable family vacation.
Beautiful, quiet and private home with amazing views of the Pacific!
Had a month here and loved every minute... even when the electric went out or water supply it was a great experience. Having Beca close by was a plus and all of her recommendations were spot on. If you like nature and outside experiences this is the place for you. Driving up the hill to the house is an experience in itself. The best lobster at the bottom of the hill... Happy Lobster is the best! It's low key lifestyle and fantastic people made it a great month in Playa Matapalo!
WOW!!!!! This place was amazing and the property owners are terrific hosts
The pictures don't do this place justice. If you want to experience the real Costa Rica then this is the place. We saw everything from tree frogs, parrots, toucans, monkeys and a sloth (Flash) that came for a visit almost daily. All of this from the deck. The location is great we were less than an hour from any adventure, zip lining, hot springs, horseback ridding to amazing water falls, national parks, great restaurants and miles of beaches. (we did all these and more). The lay out of the house is awesome. Very open, beautiful views from every window and the pool to boot. Great place for our family of 6. We WILL be coming back!
