Spacious period property in friendly village
School House is the perfect base for a holiday or rest in beautiful North Yorkshire. Built in 1909 by Sir Hugh Bell, father of Gertrude Bell, for the village school master to live in, School House is an Edwardian property from the Arts and Crafts period. Complete with an enclosed garden, it is a spacious, peaceful and calming property to stay in.
Downstairs there is a comfortable sitting room with an open fire, a dining room/day room and a spacious, well equipped, modern kitchen. There are smart TVs in the sitting and dining rooms (40â & 32â), a DVD player, several USB ports and a bluetooth digital radio. Free wifi is available throughout the house. In the porch is a boiler room and downstairs toilet. The boiler room contains a washing machine and clothes airer and has enough space to securely store 3-4 bicycles. Bicycles could also be securely stored in the porch itself. There is an outside tap near the porch door along with two outside electric sockets. Firewood is supplied free of charge and everyday basics such as tea, coffee, milk, salt & pepper and oil are in the kitchen on arrival. Loo rolls, washing powder, cleaning materials, freezer bags, cling film, tin foil etc etc are all in the house. There should be no need to bring any of these things with you unless you particularly want to!
Upstairs there are three good sized bedrooms. Bedrooms one and two have king size beds and bedroom three has two full size single beds which can, on request, be made into a super-king size bed. Each bedroom has cupboard space, hangers, a chest of drawers, full length mirror and hair dryer; clean bedding, bed liners, throws and towels are provided with every changeover. The bathroom has both a bath and an electric shower and there is an electric towel rail and shaving point. Soap, bubble bath etc is provided and is all suitable for sensitive skin. Available on request are a high chair, travel cot, safety covers for sockets, stepping stools for the basins and two stair gates.
Outside there is a fair sized, fully enclosed garden complete with table, chairs and BBQ. The garden has only recently been redesigned and replanted but already is a lovely place to sit and relax. In the summer months, the swifts are great to watch racing about in the sky!
The whole house is fully double glazed and centrally heated. Lovingly restored during lockdown, it really is a happy place to be.
Within easy walking distance is an excellent coffee shop and an equally excellent pub. A superb play ground complete with zip wire and picnic tables is a 5 minutes walk from the house. There is countryside all around, perfect for cycling and walking and, for trips further afield, there is easy access to the A19 and A172. York, Newcastle, Durham and Ripon are all within an hours easy drive away as are the seaside towns of Saltburn and Whitby. Nearer by are the market towns of Northallerton, Stokesley and Thirsk; Thirsk is famous for being the home of the real James Herriot. The Yorkshire Moors are just 5 minutes drive away. Mount Grace Priory, Rievaulx Abbey, Fountains Abbey, Castle Howard, Kiplin Hall, Newby Hall, Helmsley Castle are just some of the historic places worth visiting in the area. Details of many local attractions are all at hand in School House as are two all-weather ordinance survey maps.
Travelling to School House by car is very straightforward as Ingleby Arncliffe is easily reached from the A19 and, once there, School House has ample on and off-road parking. If travelling by train, the East Coast Main Line from Kings Cross to Edinburgh stops at Northallerton, a 15-20 taxi ride away.
The Coast to Coast walk goes through the village and there are many footpaths and good walks close at hand. Bike hire is available from the neighbouring village of Swainby - they will deliver the bikes - and there is a fairly regular bus service from the village to both Stokesley and Northallerton which could be made use of when planning walks. Generally the roads in the area are not that busy. There is a 50kw EV charging point just outside the village at The Cleveland Tontine.
I live on the outskirts of a neighbouring village. School House has belonged to my husbandâs family for many years and, during lockdown, I have enjoyed making it a happy place to stay for family, friends and hopefully Airbnb and Vrbo guests too. I am usually around and easily contactable if needed.
