It is about two miles north from Stansted Mountfitchet, and situated between Saffron Walden and Bishop's Stortford. Bishop’s Stortford is argued to be the first stretch of ‘proper’ countryside outside of North London. The village has seen a number of new developments built over the last 30 years, one of the most popular is Thorley Park. Bishop’s Park and Bishop’s Gate are also highly regarded, St Michael's Church is worth a visit, set above the old ford on the river at Windhill. The Rhodes Memorial Museum is in Netteswell House and is a collection of memorabilia and exhibits about the life of Cecil Rhodes, founder of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Bishops Stortford Museum is run by the local history society and has archaeological finds and family history.
