This Appalachian farmhouse was built off the land in 2010 on our family’s original homestead. We invite you to share in gracious country living complimented by pastoral mountain charm. Strategically located between the charming resort town of Highlands, NC, and world-class trout fishing on the Chattooga River, you have available all the comforts of home, a multitude of activities from which to choose, serenity in which to contemplate the natural beauty of our mountainous countryside and a retreat from the work-a-day world. Your destination is situated on a hillside overlooking a valley long-favored by the Cherokee for hunting, fishing, farming and community. We invite you to enjoy cool summer evenings on our front porch against the scented backdrop of freshly mowed hay, the effortless darting of barn swallows frittering back and forth across our front pasture catching their last meal of the day, our competitive hummingbirds vying for nectar, and as darkness falls, the lilting call of the local whippoorwill. Our sunsets range from cotton candy clouds uplit by rose-colored rays, to full-on glorious crystal clear, blue sky fading into sapphire sparked with shots of gold, orange and purple. The air is different here – cleaner, clearer, woodland smells carried on the breeze, with a taste of each season in the back notes. Our front porch is spacious enough to include casually elegant dining and comfortable rocking through your morning coffee or your evening cocktails while contemplating the surrounding bounty of nature. Night-time reveries are often punctuated by our friendly forest owl.

A storybook mountain home, minutes from Highlands. Enjoy spacious interiors, scenic views in this peaceful retreat. Includes enormous master bedroom suite, renovated upstairs, two heating and air systems, additional wood burning stove.

About Ron Leslie

We are retired educators splitting our time between Greenwood, South Carolina and a newly finished cabin adjacent to this property. In our travels, we have found that whenever possible VRBO properties are a preferred option to the sameness of hotel rooms. We believe that our property is an ideal opportunity for you to experience the charm of the southern Appalachians. This is a new venture for us and while we are excited at the new undertaking, we want to do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. Please review our property, ask us questions, and tell us what we can do to make your mountain visit a treasured memory.

Ron Leslie purchased this farmhouse in 2007

Why Ron Leslie chose Clayton

This property has been in our family for over 150 years. It was initially owned by my great-great grandfather (Jasper Rogers) who obtained it after returning home from the Civil War. My grandfather, Arthur Owens, purchased it from his mother (Mary Rogers Owens) in 1922. He terraced the slopes with a horse and drag-pan, and built a residence (log home) on the property. He also built the rock wall at the Highway 28 entrance with rocks he carried by hand from Big Creek, which is across the road. My grandmother, Itta Owens, raised several gardens on the property and maintained a loving home for their 8 children. After she passed in 2003 at age 102, the property became my uncle's property, and I purchased it from him in 2007. I grew up in Greenville, South Carolina (Kathryn is from Atlanta), and have visited this farm all of my life. I have enjoyed fishing in the trout streams, playing baseball in the fields across the road, and hiking over what I believe to be the most beautiful mountain region on Earth.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Please enjoy the front porch with a cup of strong coffee in the morning and a glass of fine wine in the evening. Read a book on the back deck in the morning, hike to Three Forks in the afternoon, and enjoy a world class dining experience in Highlands that evening. Or just cook out on the back deck and enjoy the peace. We believe you will find Arthur's Hill a rewarding respite from a hectic world.
