Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 8)

Woodsy, private and pet-friendly spacious modern home in a great location across a quiet neighborhood street from Tawas Lake. Easy lake access with rowboat provided. Only one mile from the Lake Huron beachfront park and quaint shops of East Tawas, the nicest tourist destination on the Sunrise Coast.

Antique displays in the house celebrate Glen's life. I will release a book in 2016 based on the over 200 letters he sent home to Ma during WW2. I inherited the house and the letters from Glen. He was my best friend and outdoors mentor.

Fully updated with all new appliances in 2006, all new furniture in 2013. House is on three lots with huge oak trees and nice views of Tawas Lake and the surrounding woods (look for the deer!). Click my website address with all my information and many photos of the interior and lovely surroundings.

The main street of East Tawas ends at the waterfront park and is lined with antique stores, casual or fine dining establishments, a classic movie theater, and a variety of other shops. The East Tawas/Tawas City area spanning Tawas Bay is the perfect size - small enough to be uncrowded and quaint but large enough to have lots of activities, large grocery stores, and a variety of shops and dining. Nearby Tawas Point State Park juts into Lake Huron with another super beach, historic lighthouse, and an extensive hiking area at the end of the point. Tawas Point is a nationally known bird watching area year-round, with even more to see during spring and fall migrations. The Huron National Forest, the famous Ausable River, Tuttle wildlife refuge, Lumberman’s Monument, and many lakes are all within a short drive from the house. Take a scenic 12 mile drive along Lake Huron to the small tourist town of Oscoda at the mouth of the Ausable River but stay in East Tawas where there’s a lot more to do.

Every season offers new activities. Spring has a burst of wildflowers and waterfowl (and low rates). A northwoods summer is usually warm without being too hot, I only rent weekly during the peak summer season (unless I’m open at the last minute). Fall colors are outstanding throughout the area. Fall also brings hunting season. There is ample public land for deer hunting nearby and Tawas Lake hosts incredible waterfowl flights. Spend a great Christmas - New Years holiday week in the North. Closed after the Holidays, open in March.

We had a wonderful weekend at your cottage. Everything was very clean and roomy. In fact, we spent most of our time in the room at the back just relaxing and talking. C.G.

Thank you for the opportunity to rent your place in East Tawas. My son became an avid fisherman, with your home conveniently located, he went fishing daily on Tawas Lake, off the pier in town and on the AuSable River. We saw our first Bald Eagle with my husband's telescope across Tawas Lake, along with many Sandhill Cranes flying in every evening, very exciting! The sunsets where beautiful on Tawas Lake. There were Osprey nesting at Tuttle Marsh, not to mention all the birds at Tawas State Park. Thank you also for allowing us to spend an extra day. We may be repeat customers as we love the location and the amenities in your home. M.D.

Hi, we just got back and wanted to let you know that we really liked it and will take it again next year, same weekend. L.F.

I have discussed 're-kindling' our old tradition of the family going to Tawas Lake in the spring to catch bluegills. The boys and I did well, about 400 or so in the week we were there. They had an awesome time. I would like to, if possible, reserve the cottage for next spring. J.R.

I look forward to renting again. We have so enjoyed it there the last two years. S.R.

The house was great, we enjoyed our stay. I'll keep your place in mind for another trip. S.L.

Thanks again for the cabin. It was perfect for what we needed. J.G.

Thank you so much for sharing your cottage in East Tawas with us. We enjoyed a truly restful few days; something we needed badly! Everything was wonderful! S.Z.

We had a great time. Not knowing exactly what to expect we were very pleased to find a spacious, clean, comfortable and well-stocked home. The proximity of your place is so convenient yet off the beaten path. I'm hoping to come again and next time will try to rustle up a kayak to borrow for exploring some more around Tawas Lake. C.W.

The cabin was superb...clean and homey feeling. C.F.

We had a great time. It was quite relaxing and accommodating with all the creature comforts. East Tawas is a nice little town and we loved the state park and beach. T.E.

Well, we are home from a wonderful week at your cottage/cabin. I expected good, we got FABULOUS - and I want to thank you! The house is adorable - not so important to a man, most likely, but to a woman who must avoid daylight and so spends her days inside, it was very important. It is surprising how a small cottage can feel so big also!! But even better than cute and spacious, the house was spotless!! I used to own a cleaning service and I was totally impressed with how clean Mrs. Kirby keeps the house! It was such a joy! E.T.

Each of the two large family rooms has a sofa sleeper, couch, or air bed. The kitchen is very fully equipped with a microwave, coffee maker, cooking utensils, dishes, etc. There is a full bathroom with shower and tub, and a full-size new washer and dryer. Expect a clean, fully equipped house in a quiet cottage area with friendly neighbors. Paved streets with little traffic are ideal for bicycling, walking, and skating.

Good weekend with issues.

  • 3 of 5

The patio table and chairs were so dirty they could not be used. They should be covered/protected to keep clean. There is a wasp nest somewhere, we killed wasps in the house all weekend. The back door exit is a safety risk, especially for my parents. No measuring cups, and a deep cleaning needs to be done. Especially since we paid a cleaning fee. Maybe the homeowner should monitor the care taker a little closer. Enjoyed our visit with the family.

Owner's Response: Hi Laura, I'm very sorry that there were some cleaning issues during your stay. I've relayed that information to my cleaner and stressed to her that she has to do a better job. Many reviews have been complementary of her cleaning but it always needs to be up to speed. I'll ask her to check the measuring cups, although they were there on my last visit. Perhaps in a cupboard you didn't look in? I've never had any guest issues with the back door exit over the 20 years I've rented this house. There is one step inside the house then steps outside. Not quite traditional but you are the only one that has commented. I will note that the house is not wheelchair friendly and I urge people to contact me prior to booking if they have concerns about elderly or disabled people using the house. Thanks for your input and business, Greg

Just right

  • 5 of 5

We have been vacationing at this property for five years; we have dogs and are glad to have a place where they are welcome. Place is always clean and tidy, improvements are always ongoing (new furnishings, renovated bath) location is convenient, neighborhood is quiet, owner always quick to respond to anything.

Owner's Response: Thanks Elizabeth! I appreciate your return every year. I try to keep up with the place even though I don't get to visit as often as I'd like. Greg

Great location. Good neighborhood. Could have been a little cleaner upon arrival.

  • 4 of 5

Only downfall was the dust under the furniture, furnace and on the entertainment center. It sleeps 8 if you like to sleep on couches, chairs and blow up beds. Couches were very comfortable. Everything you need for an amazing stay is there from games, books, puzzles, magazines and gear for fishing. It's also a great place for pets. Our dog loved it.

Owner's Response: I'm happy you enjoyed the house. Sorry about the dust, I've talked to my cleaner about that issue and it won't happen again. Estimating a sleeping capacity is a little complicated due to the number of people willing to sleep together. There is a full bed, two twin beds, a queen sized air bed and two couches. Thanks!

Great value

  • 5 of 5

Lowest priced rental around and you won't find a cleaner place. Nice location, about 1.5 miles from the quaint and fun downtown East Tawas and public beaches and State marina dock. Great fishing lake across the street with public access for a motored fishing boat just a couple minutes around the corner. Front and back living rooms more spacious than photos appear.

Map

Tawas Lake is a large all-sports lake with a mostly undeveloped shoreline. Enjoy great fishing, waterfowl viewing/hunting, or just adventuring out in my rowboat. The boat can be left on the beach right across the street from the house in a rarely used right-of-way. Larger boats can be launched and beached at the nearby public boat ramp. Wild rice still grows on some of Tawas Lake – this is definitely a special place compared to many overused northern lakes because of its beauty, natural character, and abundance of fish and wildlife. You or the kids can swim or wade across the street or at a nearby city owned vacant waterfront lot (very shallow andsandy (perfect for little ones), deeper is mucky and weedy), but the best swimming is only a mile away at the great East Tawas waterfront park. The park has an incredible long and wide sandy beach with a huge dock where you can take a long walk, fish, or just view all the docked yachts.
