As seen on the DIY Network's Salvage Dawgs, The Stone House at Black Dog Salvage was built in 1911 by an Italian stonemason for his private residence using salvaged materials from his projects. Located next door to Black Dog Salvage, this historic home has been completely renovated and modernized to be a guest house and special event venue. In addition to a unique getaway, The Stone House at Black Dog Salvage serves as the ultimate showroom for architectural salvage inspired design featuring custom furniture and accessories. The house is still being furnished. Updated photos are forthcoming!

About Mike Whiteside and Robert Kulp

Why Mike Whiteside and Robert Kulp chose Roanoke
The Stone House was built in 1911 by Italian stonemasons Michael and Joseph Grosso with salvaged materials, a perfect complement to our architectural salvage warehouse located next door. The home has been renovated to offer privacy for groups and to allow ease for entertaining. The location is ideal for enjoying the cultural and outdoor amenities in Roanoke.
What makes this House unique
Fans of the Salvage Dawgs will recognize decor throughout the house. As an extension of our showroom, most items in the home are available for purchase at our retail showroom.

Returned to Glory
This house was originally built in the 1800's by Italian immigrants that were true artisans. You can tell it was built with passion, skill and love to house their family. Today it has been lovingly returned to that former glory (with more than a few modern upgrades) by another team of passionate and dedicated artisans -- the team from Black Dog Salvage.
Do yourself a favor and when you are in the Star City - spend a couple of nights here in this exquisitly renovated gem. The original detail and character of the home has been brought back to life with many new modern conveniences included.
We loved the master bedroom and master bath! The bathroom will blow you away! We're sure that water usage in Roanoke may have hit an all time high because we enjoyed long luxurious showers more than once a day and my wife loved a daily bath in the great tub!
The other bedrooms and bathrooms are equally beautiful. The rest of the house is incredible -- including the kitchen! The best part? EVERYTHING in the house is for sale! We walked away with a great piece for our basement pub!
The hidden gem in all of this is the person that manages the house -- Christa. She is a dream -- great to work with and because we were celebrating our 25th Anniversary she included a fun welcome treat of wine and snacks! She even stopped by on Friday afternoon when we checked in with a copy of the local newspaper with a listing of all of the fun things to do in Roanoke that weekend.
There is a great walking trail right outside of the home and Roanoke is full of great restaurants and things to do and explore!
Awesome Stone House
What a beautiful house. Black Dawg Salvage did a fantastic job. Christa gave us a great behind the scene tour. We had a wonderful time even though it rained the whole time. The house is in the perfect location as you can walk to so many restaurants. Also a beautiful greenway across from the house.
Our fantastic visit to the Stone House!!
This was not just a "rental" property to vacation at. It is truly an amazing experience. The family was so awe inspired that everyone voted to stay at the house on Sunday and not got anywhere else!! The history, the décor, the special pieces made by BDS, and yet the modern conveniences were so appreciated by us all. The owners and managers were so helpful and supportive. We were treated like royalty. It was the first vacation that we just weren't ready to go home. We all wanted "just one more day". I have to say the combination of The Stone House, the people and being so close to BDS store made it a very memorable experience. Highly recommend a stay at the BDS Stone House!! We are definitely planning a return trip in the near future! Christa, YOU ROCK!! Thanks for everything. The only wish was that I could have brought my dog with me. Hated leaving her behind in a kennel for a week!! Thanks to you all for an amazing vacation and helping me surprise my sister for her birthday!! Cindy
Restored, historic Stone House at Black Dawg Salvage
We were greeted shortly after arriving by Christa Stephens. She told us about the property, answered any questions we had and was only a phone call away if we needed anything. She made us feel very welcome and took us on a tour of Black Dawg Salvage the next day.
The Stone House is a beautiful historic home that has many modern conveniences. We loved all the clever decor and were impressed by the skill and creativity of the crafters. There is a beautiful park across the street with biking and walking trails. Restaurants and shopping are within walking distance.
We were also given the opportunity to meet Mike and other members of the cast as well as those behind the scenes. The Black Dawg Salvage team could not be nicer and we appreciated all they did to make our visit special.
Thanks, Mary! We really enjoyed meeting "The Six Pack" and hope to see you all again in the future! Best wishes for your next travel adventure, Christa
Best Experience Ever!
We rented the Stone House as a birthday getaway for my husband & a surprise for his sweet mother, as she is a huge Salvage Dog fan.
The correspondence with the booking team to get the house booked was quick & they were super thoughtful to be sure our multigenerational family would have our needs met in this home.
When Lucy found out we were fans of the show she made arrangements for us to have a quick behind the scenes tour during our stay.
She even had a birthday card & Birthday cake waiting for us when we checked in.
The house is AMAZING! If you watch the DIY Network show Salvage Dog (store located right next door to the house) you will recognize things all through the house from some of the shows. The attention to detail & luxury of this house is second to none!! From the custom made cabinets, to the heated tile bathroom floors & automated luxury spa shower to the coffee bar outside our upstairs bedroom
invite you to totally sit back & enjoy. All 3 rooms had their own bathrooms with one of a kind Salavage Dog customized touches, super comfortable mattresses, luxurious sheets, & cozy pillows. The decor & impeccable attention to detail invite you to just sit back on the patio, balcony or front porch & relax.
Someone put together a helpful book on suggestions of things to do in town, restaurants to visit & lots of generally helpful information. They even left the entertainment section of the recent newspaper to see what events were happening in town.
On our visit we enjoyed a short walk in the park located right across the street. Our five year old little boyhad a blast running in the park.
The next day we visited the store next door & met almost all the members on the show. Everyone we met was so extremely friendly & accommodating we almost felt like we were the TV show celebrities instead of the other way around. My sweet mother-in-law got so much joy out of getting to speak with, take pictures & ask questions with Robert, Mike, Tay, Susan, Koiner & others. They were so laid back & gave us their full attention.
Mike even came to the house with the “dogs in training” Molly Mae & Stella so our son (above mentioned 5 year old) could meet them & love on them.
Crista gave us a fun filled behind the scenes tour & again we were blown away with the kindness we received.
We fully & completely enjoyed our visit & have made tentative plans to return soon to do a painting class with Ms. Susan.
We cannot give high enough marks to this experience.
Thank you for visiting The Stone House and we are thrilled that your family enjoyed your stay! We look forward to your next visit to Roanoke and to The Stone House!
A priceless landmark designed by craftspeople.
Not a single detail was overlooked in this splendid work of architectural restoration and interior design. Five-star comfort in every room managed with spotless care. Breathtaking location on the river with scenic trail for biking and walking; but especially liked the location adjacent to Black Dog Salvage, a worthy multi-day visit for treasure hunting and learning from the crew of Salvage Dawgs.
Thank you so much for your comments and we are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay at the new Stone House! We strive to offer a first class experience to all of our guests. We hope to be able to host you again when your travels bring you to Roanoke.
Conveniently located to downtown Roanoke and Historic Grandin Village, with miles of biking, hiking, and river trails accessible by the adjacent Roanoke River Greenway. The Stone House is ideal for enjoying urban conveniences and outdoor adventure.
