About this property
The Mill House in Upperville -
Fall is the perfect time at the Mill House - the trestle table and interior stone wall of the kitchen and roaring fire, well - the Mill House is perfect for warmth and togetherness.
Weekends at the Mill House in the winter are all about cozy dinners with a huge open fireplace in the family room, cozy bedrooms, and places to be together and/or find a space to be by yourself and read.
In the summer, its about the cool pool in the ruins of the mill, or splashing in Pantherskin Creek. Upperville has some great new offerings - Hunters Head Tavern continues to be a wonderful place for dinner, and in the center of the village, Bluewater Kitchen has opened with wonderful farm to table grocery items and ready to go pick up dinners. Slaters Run Winery has opened a beautiful new tasting room and deck at the Upperville winery, AND Upperville Farm and Feed has opened across the street and features fresh, local produce and farm eggs, and will soon source local meats. So much happening in the tiny village of Upperville!
Come spend a weekend and explore the countryside with hikes, wineries, shopping, dinner at the local tavern in Upperville, or enjoy restaurants and shopping in nearby Middleburg!
Located on the west end of the village of Upperville, the Mill House is the perfect get away for families, business retreats, or recharging. With a formal living room, a 'snuggery', a great room, two kitchens, 5 fireplaces, 4 dining areas (!) - its a place to enjoy families and friends!
Sky Meadows State Park is 1,860 acres and the site of a historic farm, 5 miles from the Mill House. It offers hiking, fishing and special events.
if you're looking to live in a bit of history, the Mill House is perfect.
Oh! And if its a full moon, grab a sleeping bag and go down by the creek, or have a fire in the fire pit on any night- its a magical place. Smores made around the bonfire are enormously popular year round.
The Upperville Horse Show, polo matches, wineries, Sky Meadows, Great Meadow Field Events, Trinity Church, Hunter's Head Tavern - everything is within easy reach.

About the host
Hosted by Constance Chatfield-Taylor
My family has lived in the area for 100 years, continually active in horses and Virginia history. I am a UVA alumna, play polo in the area, and other than living in San Francisco for 5 years in the early '80s, I am a Virginian through and through. There's work too - I am co-owner of a communications company, Flying Colors Broadcasts, in nearby Washington, DC.
The Mill House spoke to me in 2008 when I saw that it was for sale - there was just something about it, it seemed magical and as if it had a story to tell. My plate full, it did not happen, but I didn't stop thinking about it. And in 2012, it was on the market again and this time it stood up and shouted, so we bought it and brought it back to health. We had to pull up old floor boards (carefully so we could reuse), replace joists, put on a new porch, build walks and a terrace, replace appliances, expose interior stone walls - and yes, fix the magical pool.
It now is available for others to experience the Mill House magic.

Why they chose this property
My sons and I play polo in the area, and its a great jumping off point for anything in the country. Pantherskin Creek is captivating and the Mill House is the kind of place that simply 'pulls you outside', whether its to walk near the creek during the full moon, to sit at the pool watching fireflies, or to sit by the fire pit, which is in the location of the original well.
Its an 'any season' house, the great room in the winter is large and comfortable with the kitchen at one end. The stone kitchen at the end of the porch is heaven in summer, with a wall of windows and cool stone floors. Its a place to bring people together, and explore the countryside or just stay on the property. Friends have come out with extensive plans, but have decided to swim, read and sit on the porch, saying 'we'd rather stay right here...'

What makes this property unique
It has a low water bridge over Pantherskin Creek, which is high in spring and summer, low in August. You'll find yourself taking a 'coffee walk' in the morning, it just happens. And summer lunches on the screened porches are wonderful. There are so many places to read, visit, or just enjoy. You can occasionally hear the horses over the fence, or trumpet swans flying overhead in the spring. The sounds and light and views are restful and peaceful.
