This is a small community. There are many different communities in Fire Island that one can visit either by lateral ferry or by water taxi. Each caters to a different clientèle This house is totally equipped, as we live there much of the year Air conditioning in living room and upstairs bedroom only

Perfect Vacation with Family

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this property for the last week of the summer (2014). We have two young children (7yrs, 3yrs). We had the most perfect family vacation! The house is located in a fantastic spot... a couple blocks from the beach and several blocks from town (but closer to beach). You can hear waves crashing from master bedroom at night (what a relaxing way to fall asleep!). Some beach houses can feel like real dumps. This house feels like a real beach house in a charming lived-in way but has every amenity one could possibly need for a beach vacation; a beautifully appointed brand new kitchen (we cooked every night), washer/dryer, comfy, cozy bedrooms and a super comfy living/dining room area. We really took advantage of the very private deck while our youngest napped every afternoon in her bedroom. Every night was walked into town for icecream and a stroll around. The master bedroom has AC which was great and there are plenty of fans to cool down the other bedrooms. There was AC as well in the living room but it was not needed. The living room has a beautiful, large bay window which is great for watching people go to and from the beach and also for spotting the wild deer that are quite common on Fire Island. Guaranteed to see at least one every day! The owner was delightful to deal with, very responsive about everything and really accommodating. She even had a welcome note and special gift waiting for us when we arrived (what a thoughtful touch and a great way to start a vacation!). I am torn about highly recommending this house to everyone I know because I want to keep it all to myself!! We will definitely try to visit again next summer!

We come back here every summer!

  • 5 of 5

I've been coming to Fire Island for a very long time and have rented several houses over the years, and this by far is one of the best. It's comfortable, spacious enough for my family, bright and clean, and has a warm welcoming vibe. The south-of-Midway location is prime, so close to the beach that you can hear the waves at night. The back deck is private, peaceful and perfect for outdoor meals. Rochelle and Bob are gracious and generous hosts. This was our fourth consecutive summer renting their lovely home; there's a reason we keep coming back each year!

Truly home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful home in the perfect location. Super close to beach, easy to go back and forth for lunch and snacks. The house has absolutely everything you could possibly need. The deck is beautiful and sunny, and very private. Quick walk to town, but far enough away that the only thing you hear all night is the ocean. The inside of the home is just that, home. Very warm , comfortable and inviting. Stayed with my husband, two teenagers, and a 7 year old. There was plenty of room for all. Everything was clean and beautifully maintained. Owners were just a pleasure, leaving us a gift and checking in to make sure we were enjoying our vacation, very sweet. My only complaint is that the trip was too short. Would love to stay here again.

Perfect Seaside Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We would recommend this house to anyone and would definitely like to go back again to this special place.

We live in Albuquerque, NM and had never been to Fire Island before. The owners were so very helpful that we felt like we knew the town before we even got there. We rented in June and the weather was exceptional. Everything about this house was perfect - well maintained, clean and ideal for our family vacation. The house is located very close to the ocean and you can actually hear the waves break at night. On a summer holiday it is the outside that really determines how much enjoyment you will get from your stay. The spacious deck is filled with candles, lights and beautiful plants and flowers. In the mornings, we would sit outside and listen to all the different species of birds that we checked out in the bird books the owners were thoughtful enough to leave for us. Just wonderful. Since there are no cars you can walk to a very self-contained town that even has a movie theatre. The town does get very crowded at night but the kids loved that about it. The bathrooms and kitchen were very well equipped and newly renovated, and the outdoor shower was just sublime!

There are two cats that live on the deck and my kids were in competition about who gets to feed them first. It made them feel very at home and responsible.

It was a nice touch to receive a text from the owners to ensure we were settling in well and to ask if there was anything we needed. They were great to rent from and truly make the house feel like your home away from home. They also very prompt in returning our security deposit. All in all, a great experience we hope to repeat.

Not what we expected.

  • 1 of 5

Our family stayed in this house in August of 2011. The owners greeted us at the ferry and led us to the cottage, where they announced the rules of the house before they allowed us to enter (wash off the sand, keep the door closed, etc.). Then they gave us a tour of the home which is completely filled with their personal possessions, including clothing and food. If you think you're going to use the dressers or closets, think again -- their food lined the cupboards, filled the fridge, and their clothes were in the drawers and in the closets. Imagine finding someone's dirty slippers under your bed, or a pair of someone else's bathrobes hanging on the back of the bathroom door? Or taking a shower and finding a used bar of soap? There are notes all over telling you what you are and are not allowed to use. The blender is stored in the area "off limits". Then there are the cats. Imagine our surprise at finding a cat sleeping on our bed in our room. The owners ended up taking their own cats, but there were feral cats we were asked to feed. One of our children has an allergy to cats and was very uncomfortable during our stay. The upstairs has a room air conditioner, but it is ineffective against the heat. The upstairs bathroom is a powder room only and the ceilings are not high enough to stand up inside, unless you are under five feet tall. The smell of cat urine is pervasive in the two downstairs bedrooms.

We can't leave the review without at least noting the positives: the house is nicely located on Fire Island. The owners left chocolate and wine for us, and the outdoor shower is nice. There are granite countertops in the kitchen.

After reading the nine other reviews left for this home, we noticed that eight of the profiles of the reviewers were created on the same day. This leads us to believe that they are fake reviews. In no way do the scenes depicted by these "reviews" mirror what we experienced. Rent at your own risk.

Owner's Response: It is very sad and disheartening to read this scathing review. Vacations should be wonderful and filled with special memories, and we try to contribute to those. And considering it has taken an entire year to comment is very strange. There is so much dissatisfaction that we won’t try. However, for those of you who might think this is true, here are a few facts: We have been renting our home for over 25 years and this is a first. We get beautiful thank-you notes and many of our renters leave us gifts. We are always told what makes our home more desirable is the fact that we do have personal things. It has been a positive aspect. However, everyone’s desires and tastes are different. The foods so "disparagingly" left in the refrigerator are staples such as ketchup, mustard, etc. and we encourage everyone to use them. We have everything one would need to spend a month, although most spend between 1 and 2 weeks. Fire Island is very expensive and we find that our tenants welcome this. We personally speak to everyone and apprise them of the oddities of our home, i.e. the upstairs bedroom being hot during the day, that we have 2 cats that live on our deck but never come into the house, that our NYC cat spends weekends with us and loves the privacy of her own little bed situated outside our bedroom. We won’t even comment on the fake reviews. It is silly and as you can see, we have many repeat renters. Yes, we have rules such as asking people to please be conscious of getting sand in the house. We own many sets of dishes and antiques and ask tenants not to use the special ones. There are so many other choices and tenants are always respectful of our favorite things. Perhaps the fact that the Vetters had traveled very far only to be bombarded by storms every day contributed to their severe displeasure. We would have hoped that being a broadcast journalist, communication would have been forthcoming “Perhaps in 2012 you will find the vacation of your dreams and the sunshine for your soul!”
