A Peaceful and Picture Perfect Getaway
The cottage looked exactly like the pictures and it was a relaxing getaway for us. We were celebrating my birthday and were surprised to find Prosecco left for us upon our arrival. We were able to enjoy the bbq grill and deck with family members who were visiting us for an afternoon. We were also able to set a fire in the fireplace in the evening. The main house is next door but there's still a good amount of privacy since the deck is on the opposite side of the house. In a previous review, someone commented that there's no fencing around the property which is true but the path is at least 20 feet away from the front door. There are several trees surrounding the property and they provide ample coverage from passersby on the trail and no one disturbed us. It was nice to be surrounded by nature; we spotted 2 deer and a groundhog on the property. This is probably one of the nicest places we've stayed at!
All the positive reviews are spot on. The owner has thought of everything in this cozy and lovely cottage. I think it's a good rental year round and we hope to be back again soon. I can't think of anything that this small cottage doesn't have and we especially appreciated the water and sodas in the fridge when we arrived.
Not suitable for a private getaway
As a couple from NYC, we were staying there for a little over a week in May to get away from it all.
The cabin is very small, but clean. It has a small, uncovered porch facing the lawn and a bare field. Right next to the house is the beginning of a hiking trail. The proximity to the hiking trail can be convenient, but it also is the cause for constant company. Given that this trail is directly adjacent to the property, people using it practically walk all over the porch all the time. Since there is no fence, no bush, nothing, unleashed dogs, children playing etc. easily join you while on the porch. Given that we were looking for tranquility and privacy, we were not fond of this. The windows of the house also directly face the trail, so even inside the cabin, one has the choice of being subject to curious looks or sitting in the dark. Irene was a good communicator, alerting us that the water would be turned off for a day and made sure that the check in had worked. One thing that I found very odd and something that I had never experienced with Homeaway before was the constant communication outside of Homeaway channels and the insisting of revealing private information such as private address to her directly. We cannot recommend this place for a getaway, but however, if you are just looking to spend the night somewhere, it is fine.
Sky Island Cottage has welcomed guests for over twenty years. There are over 100 five star ratings for the property. We strive to provide an environment that while small, offers all the amenities needed to experience a carefree, peaceful respite, close to nature and the beauty of the surrounding mountains, trails and creeks. The cottage is situated at the end of a dead-end road on my small farm, is oriented to my fallow field, and is very private.
Although there has been increased foot traffic on the Rail Trail due to the pandemic, it is still hardly used and generally offers a place for a quiet walk. The trail is hidden from the cottage by vegetation, including a 100 ft. high spruce tree and very high shrubs. It is NOT an easy process for anyone to be peering into the windows. This is the first time I have ever heard of any stray children or dogs on the deck or property, and this guest did not mention this to me, at all, while she was here.
Unfortunately, the town had to do some remedial repair on the water system on the day she was here, and as a result the water was closed for five or six hours.
As is customary in the hospitality business in this country, home addresses are required. They are not used for solicitation.
When sending detailed arrival instructions, we provide access information for entering the cottage. This is necessarily a lengthy e-mail, beyond the size constraints allowed by HomeAway/VRBO, but more importantly, we do not want this information on a public platform. This is the reason for direct communication with the renter.
We're sorry this guest did not enjoy her stay and hope she finds something more to her liking when she expands her list of requirements.
We hope our potential guests will read our recommendations and judge for themselves.
Truly is an enchanted cottage!
We had such a wonderful time at the enchanted cottage this weekend! This by far is one of the cleanest and most well-equipped properties we have ever stayed in. Irene has thoughtfully considered EVERY detail - from any kitchen utensil you might need to cook a nice meal in the beautiful kitchen or on the grill, to a basket full of kindling to create a cozy fire, and even spare wool blankets for chilly mornings/evenings on the back deck. All the appliances were super modern and efficient. The exterior looks like a beautiful rustic cottage, while the interior is super clean and modern. There is great natural light during the day through the many windows that also allow for great views of the surrounding landscape. Irene is such a thoughtful and attentive host, even calling us shortly after our check-in to ask if we needed anything. The location is also very convenient, in close proximity to stores, natural parks, and of course the rail trail. We enjoyed drinking our morning coffee and yoga on the back deck, sipping wine in front of the fire, and exploring the nearby trail. What a wonderful find - we cant' wait to return!
Property was in excellent condition. The place had all the necessities necessary and much more. Recommend this cottage highly. Very tranquil
