About Francie Olson

I am a 68 year old woman who has been training horses and teaching horse back riding for 40 years now. I have this ranch for the love of horses and the beauty of Colorado. I am an avid hike and also breed Black and Tan Coonhounds who love to share their love for the many guests that come and visit

Francie Olson purchased this house in 2005

Why Francie Olson chose Hesperus

If you want a very unusual getaway and enjoy the beauty of this area with 360 degrees views of the mountains and mesas plus view much wildlife and of course the beautiful horses eating in pastures.

What makes this house unique

Everyone has told me that the guest house is much better than the pictures. You have your own deck to view the wildlife and a hot tub to watch the stars. Inside it is warm and inviting to relax. This place is a dream!

  • 5 of 5

We loved everything about the HD Ranch. I'm so glad we chose to stay here instead of in town. Each time we went to Durango we always found that we were so excited to get back to the ranch and take a nightly walk to feed the horses. It was clean and quiet. You have a lot of privacy. Francie is very accommodating and the daily visits from the dogs were my favorite! You just can't duplicate that at a hotel. It's such a utopia. Plan on driving about 20-25 min to town.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the wonderful review and it makes me so happy that you had a great time on your vacation. I can only keep this ranch because of my guests so I am so happy that I can share the beauty with you and the hounds and horses of course! Thank you again. Best, Francie

Beautiful, unique cabin on a real horse ranch. Half way between Durango and Mesa Verde - fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I started using VRBO/HomeAway several years ago, and I must say, this is one of our all-time favorites. We loved the beautiful, well built little cabin, the scenery, the hound dogs, the horses, the peace and quiet - everything, and Francie is a great host. We were only able to stay three nights, but would definitely recommend this place, especially for a couple.

Amazing peaceful gorgeous property

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed Francie and her property. The guest house has everything you need and most of all it is quiet, peaceful, serene with gorgeous views. Easy access to anything you want to do in the area and the dogs are incredible they came everyday at least once for their treats. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed that the TV was upstairs and barely on the whole time we were there much nicer to enjoy the scenery, wildlife, stars and no outside stimulation really allows you to unwind. We would definitely visit again.

Owner's Response: Thank you both very much for your wonderful review but most of all that you enjoyed your stay and vacation. That is the most important to me that I can share the beauty of this ranch with others! Thank you again and look forward to your return. Best, Francie

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

We - my husband, my son, his girlfriend and myself - loved our stay at the guest house! Francie was extremely easy to work with. The cabin was immaculate and had everything we needed for our long weekend stay. We enjoyed watching the horses, visits from the dogs, viewing the sunsets from the deck, lounging in the hot tub and gazing at the stars. We took day trips to Telluride, Ouray and Silverton enjoying our drives through the mountains. And we ate in Durango - which is very close by - and did a rafting trip on the Animas River. I loved the isolation and quiet of the ranch and would love to go back!

Best stay of our trip

  • 5 of 5

My wife & I did a trip through the southwest starting in Sedona, AZ & ending in Durango, CO. This was my favorite VRBO. The ranch is out of the way and very peaceful. The cabin is beautiful. After each day of activities in the Durango/Mesa Verde area, we walked the ranch lane & viewed the horses and relaxed on the porch. The dogs were entertaining a visited us most days. If we are in the Durango area again, we would definitely try to book again.

PERFECT!!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for some peace and beautiful scenery and we certainly were not disappointed at DH Ranch. The accommodations are exactly as depicted, if not better, and the daily visit from the dogs was a special treat. If the door wasn't already open, we would look up, and there would be those long faces gazing in at us. Amazing how they would know when it was breakfast time! Francie is so friendly, approachable, and the best hostess. We are going back in October and cannot wait. Please go visit her and her wonderful animal family. WE loved it!!!

The ranch is located just 14 miles from Durango and the famous Durango Silverton train and many outdoor activities ie. rafting, fishing, hiking, walking, skiing, rock climbing, jeep tours, cross country skiing, cycling both mountain and road. Only 35 miles away is Mesa Verde National Park and you can also visit the four corners monument. From the ranch you can drive the Million dollar highway that takes you from Durango to Silverton to Ouray to Telluride and back to the ranch. I am an avid hike so I can inform you of many of the great trails in this beautiful mountain range. Also great shopping and dining in the quaint old town of Durango.
