Scroll ll to the big photos on the bottom of the page to really see the house! Read this description and learn a lot about the house!

Please Be adventurous and enjoy new places and things if you want to visit Casita Dragonfly. It's a wonderful house, but we know it's not for everyone!. The people who love it come back year after year!

In Late 2014 there was a large influx of Sargasso-a type of seaweed) on the beaches of Mahahual (and most beaches on the East side of Mexico and up to Texas) It is now gone on a daily basis in most areas including our beach. However, there is no way for we mere mortals to control this or predict if it might come back.'

It took everyone (even scientists) by surprise.

So for now we can promise you the sweet house, we just cannot promise you the pristine beach pictured . We do our best to keep up but there are may be a few days here (or every day--which would be a fluke) we cannot predict if or when , or if it will be futile to clean up (it weighs tons)

You will not find a better deal on a fully private home very well equipped home RIGHT on the beach during the summer/fall. This is the perfect house for some people and the wrong house for others. If you are unsure, we will send you a questionnaire and we can decide together!

Casita Dragonfly is one of the few affordable strictly single-family homes for rent in the Mahahual area.

11 kilometers south of Mahahual central (about 6 miles on an often bumpy often charming beach road) , you find Casita Dragonfly. Our sweet casita Offering two bedrooms with Queen Bed with additional fold out Futon that doubles as a great couch, Upstairs. A Queen Bed Downstairs and two bathrooms on a property that you will enjoy all to yourself. This is not a resort, or a duplex or a complex. It’s your very own beachfront slice of the Mexican caribe! Please ask us for tons of photos of the house, beach and area! Ask for google map location! Ask us anything!

Internet? yes!

Air Conditioning? no

French Press? yes (well tell you how to make coffee)

A keurig coffee maker? no.

Only one house next door, with caretakers house in between, plus one house a few lots to the north this is a peaceful parcel of paradise, which will not only serve a family of up to four, but is a perfect romantic getaway for two.

Downstairs you find a living room, dining room, bedroom and spacious kitchen plus immediate access to the large shaded beachfront Palapa porch with seating for dining for 4, and loungers for six--on beach or palapa plus hammock in the shade and the almost constant breeze and the sands of the Costa Maya.

Upstairs, accessed by an exterior staircase is a cozy breezy unique master bedroom with a spectacular view on three sides plus a roomy ocean view terrace with outdoor sunbed and small complete bathroom plus attached screened palapa with hanging bed for day dreaming, reading or just lounging. The bathroom is your own private bathroom of course, but the sectional does not go all the way to the sloped ceiling.

Experience sunrise with a cup of French press coffee, (as the house sustains itself with SOLAR POWER ONLY electric coffee makers, microwaves, toaster, toaster ovens or any heat producing electronics are prohibited in the home--please do not bring your own..even hair dryers are expressly forbidden)The ocean breeze will dry your hair and-using high wattage items will leave you with no power and us with a very expensive solar system to replace.

Bring your lap top/tablet/phone to stay in touch with the world, if you'd like, through our private and included internet .

No problems charging computers, phones, cameras etc. Got that? Yes, you can charge your computers, phones etc.

Yes, you will have power at night.

The reef protected waters offer a SPECTACULAR snorkeling experience out to the reef on our four kayaks. Although the water in front of the Casita is usually nice enough to float in and cool off in you will possibly this year find sargasso along the way--- a healthy part (but quite annoying to swimmers and beach walkers ) of the reef system. most often though, its easy to swim or kayak over but it's not pretty

We suggest bringing your own snorkel gear for a perfect fit.

Standing Fans, Bedfans, and an almost constant ocean breeze keep you more than comfortable on all but the hottest of days. If you are sensitive to the tropical heat and humidity we do NOT recommend our home, as we are almost at one with nature, with no means to supply air conditioning if the wind stops. It's rare, but it does happen and we cannot predict when. All windows and doors are screened (but you have to remember to keep the the screens closed!!! ) negating the need for mosquito nets in the evening, but we offer them as they offer an extra layer of protection and they are so pretty!

If you find you are warm outside, enjoy our outdoor shower, cool and refreshing! Please though, do remember to help us conserve water, one of our most precious commodities. Conserve, conserve conserve!!!!

Six miles to Mahahual via either the beach road which can be bumpy or the very close access 'new' road which is pretty boring you will find restaurants, tiendas, wonderful beachside palapas for a fabulous breakfast, lunch, dinner or refrescas. We are happy to give recommendations. Mahahual and her people are friendly, helpful and geared towards you having an unforgettable vacation.

So are we.

This is really not a party house--it needs to rest over night too! We have few neighbors, but sound does travel and we hope that you would respect other families and other's vacations, and although we have plenty of solar power the system can be ruined by leaving everything on all night. So sleep! Sleeep!! Nothing like falling asleep to the sounds of the waves and winds. And waking up to the amazing birds on property!

If you are sensitive to the heat/humidity or live for loud late nights, party scenes and pampered luxury, this is NOT the house! Maybe not the town for you. Although we have a bustling music scene in the winter and spring and GREAT restaurants at a fraction of what you will pay up north!

We are unpretentious, but with everything you need for a short or long getaway! The longer you stay the more acclimated you get!

Perfect for those looking for clean comfy creature comforts, but off the beaten path!

Adventurers Welcome! We always have a clean and well equipped house, but we cannot control the weather nor the tides or new influx of sargasso. Since our lovely caretakers speak no english (because they are in mexico) if you speak no spanish, please know that signing and pointing and showing is a much better way to communicate than shouting. Mexican people in the service industry are there because of their good nature and eagerness to make you happy, they will be horrified if you yell at them. Please don't.

Those who do not fear Blue Crabs, beach crabs, dogs, and Iguanas and DO remember to use insect repellent, who DONT ignore my recommendations almost always have an wonderful nacation!

Please see our guest comments---which speak for themselves!

Please know the summer months (low season) are best for the ADVENTUROUS seasoned traveler only. Write for details. Not recommended for children or the elderly or infirm or the weak or whiney :) in the hotter more humid summer months. However the ocean is warmer and that's a nice trade off.

Taxes included. As Low as 100.00 USD per night for last minute bookings made within 30 days for two people.. Restrictions apply.

Even One or two people at discounted rates have access to the entire house, Nothing is ever closed off to guests. You always have the house to yourself.

Every bed, every lounger, every hammock, every sunrise, every moonrise--all yours!

Also, if you don't like dogs or cats or kids--well, two dogs are on property with caretaker next door along with one cat, and one adorable child.

Ahhh, I wish I was there right now.

About Whitney

We fell in love with Mahahual within 5 minutes of discovering it. 3 months later we found this home and it became ours! That was 2007 and we still feel the same way. It's not for everyone, but there is something magical about Mahahual. If you are and adventurer at heart or life (or just need a quiet place to read a book) this might be the place for you

Whitney purchased this house in 2007

Why Whitney chose Quintana Roo

We were looking for an area almost untouched by man, so far this is the place. the last truly unincorporated but accessible area on the East Side of the Yucatan. Yes there is a town, but it's 6 miles away. There you can get almost everything you need for a vacation (except electronics) but at the house, you are on your own little piece of paradise. Powered by the sun, quenched by the rain, you decide what you want to do or not. We bought this house for ourselves, simple, sweet and right on the sand. We bought because it's not Cancun, it's not Puerto Vallerta, it's not Cabo. We've been to all and were taken in by Mahahual immediately. Quiet. Just you and nature.

What makes this house unique

The best of Mexico's tropical climate and ambiance, but with nice comfy bedding! If you've stayed in Mexico a lot, you know how this is appreciated!! You'll see few people if you choose.

You'll be awakened by the sunrise and you won't mind. If you do, bring an eyemask! Sunrises are beautiful, the ocean breezes which are usually plentiful will be your best friend. The palapa porch, unique to the area ..in addition to a sunbed and screened lounging patio room upstairs with a hanging bed!

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Casita was just great.

Hours on the kayak and in the ocean sprayed by Dolphin breath. Brandy is such a wonderful tough dog. The caretakers are very thoughtful. Tapas at the Travel Inn-yum! We even enjoyed the flooded road. On our way out the Pelicans were having a feast on thousands of fish being washed out of the jungle. The search for some fresh Sardine bait in Xcalak turned in to an afternoon of fishing with ****** on a dugout canoe his father made 60 years ago. What an amazing treat. Also a day to Santa Rosa where the bridge burned down. We gave our fish to a very hungry family and a monkey drank our beer. I'd like to go back in a couple weeks but no one can get away to come with me.

Gee it's fun to be home......I busted through the ice on the pond yesterday... went up to my knees.

Beautiful, relaxing beach cabana!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 (2 adults, children ages 13-18) just returned from a 4 week adventure traveling around the Yucatan Peninsula. The first leg of our adventure was a 6-night stay at Casita Dragonfly. If you want to relax and get away from it all, stay at Casita Dragonfly! We spent hours snorkeling, kayaking, and reading on the wonderful palapa porch (with a constant breeze blowing that kept any mosquitos at bay and ensured a wonderful temperature.) Casita Dragonfly sits right on the beach, steps away from the ocean. You need not put on a pair of shoes while there as the property sits right on the sand - although there is enough vegetation that not once did we have sand blowing around. Although the house has wifi, we enjoyed staying unplugged for the most part. Fans and screened windows kept us cool at night, the kitchen is equipped with all you'll need, and there are plenty of tables and chairs spread throughout the house and on the porch so that you're never far away from a place to sip a cool drink and read a good book. We were interested in snorkeling the reef, which is accessible from the beach - a very long swim, but more easily accessed by the kayaks the property provides. Our first two outings to the reef were amazing, flat water and wonderful visibility - sting ray, manta ray, tropical fish, beautiful coral. After those days, it got windy which made the porch even more comfortable, but made snorkeling impossible - instead, we took the kayaks out for long trips, where we were lucky enough to spot a sea turtle and a family of manatees. The town of Mahahual is a 30 minute drive for restaurants and basic necessities, but we preferred to stay at the Casita and away from the cruise ship crowds. While at the Casita, the only other people we ever saw were the wonderfully kind caretakers who checked in daily to make sure we had enough drinking water and that the cistern was full. The owners of the Casita have decorated it with many little touches that make the house extremely comfortable and special. There are colorful, decorative pillows all over and several options for lounging (a hanging bed, a lounge bed in the sun, a hammock and many lounge chairs - both on the porch and on the beach). The five of us had plenty of space to sleep and spread out. The property would also be perfect for two couples to share as there are two distinct sleeping areas/bathrooms-one upstairs, one downstairs. Extremely helpful are the detailed instructions provided by owners.

AMAZING experience! We'll be back!!

  • 5 of 5

We just came back from Casita Dragonfly and we already are looking to go back in just 3 months, we want to share the experience with my parents.

We are a 41 years old couple, traveled alone there. We were spending the mornings in Mahaual for scuba diving classes and then the afternoons back at the Casita on the beach. Nights are magical with thousands of stars you can see without city lights distraction. We had the beach for ourselves , everything nice and quiet. Some of the best moments probably when we were enjoying watching the rain with a cup of Mexican coffee in our hands.

The property is clean, the kitchen has more than what we needed. It does't have AC, but we never need it. The night breeze was more than enough, actually, we had to close a little bit the window because it was getting cool.

I definitely would recommend this place, if you are looking for the fancy restaurants and the all inclusive stuff with the party and the noise, this is not your place, better choose Cancun. If you are looking for some of the real Mexico and a stay in a quiet and relaxing place, then go to Mahahual and stay at Casita Dragonfly, Whitney is so good providing all the info you will need even before arrive to Mahahual. When you rent a care,a plus would be a SUV, you REALLY don't need it mandatory, but could be nicer ;)

Diving adventure in a secluded place

  • 5 of 5

We spend two weeks at Casita Dragonfly, our vacation was great. I didn’t write a review sooner because I was busy booking dragonfly again, I wasn’t even home for a week and we decided to go back for more. The place is wonderful is what we were looking for. We really enjoyed it. We made friends with the neighbors next door and we dove with them a few times.

The house has everything you need to enjoy for your stay and yes is in between the mangrove and the ocean and 11 kms away from Mahahual in the outdoors expect whatever comes with a tropical environment, from toads to lizards, geckos and iguanas. Small bugs, big bugs, crabs, and birds. Here you won’t see any deer, moose or bears. So its different ………very pretty and relaxing!!!

About the furry companions? My boys wanted to take brandy back with us, he hung out with us all the time, guero came at dinner time was like being at home, they came with us for a long beach walks. Very nice dogs.

Us being divers I will target my review towards that side, first the beach! Is a nice open shallow beach with white sand, the portion at the house is clean of native plants, and collects sea grass from the waves at night. There are patchy areas of sand but most of the bottom is sea grass all the way to the reef which is located around 600/700 mts from the beach, the best way to get there is with the kayaks, the average depth is 10-15 feet all the way to the reef which pretty much comes out of the surface.

There are many isolated heads of coral formations, very nice snorkeling experience but also very good to do some scuba at very shallow depth giving you plenty of time to observe the reef. Just make sure you bring the anchor with the kayaks and don loose them.

We didn’t go to the side beyond the reef barrier so not sure about diving but snorkeling will be a challenge with the waves breaking over the reef.

We connected with Gypsea Divers, and we had to drive every time to the diving shop , something that we enjoy going to town. Catherine went beyond expectations for us to enjoy our dives , excellent reefs and nobody around, so we were a group or four with nobody else to share the dives, we did ten plus dives and we went to many different locations.

If you are a diver the recipe is Mahaual + Casita dragonfly + Gypsea Divers = awesome diving trip!!……so we will be back to Dragonfly for more underwater adventures in January.

Thank you W for sharing your House and allowing us to enjoy that piece of paradise.

Can't wait to come back!

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect, and the location was stunning. So calm and quiet and out of the way. We loved all of the animals: the geckos, crabs, iguanas, and especially the dogs. Whitney did an amazing, thorough, careful job of informing us in advance about everything we needed to know: Details about the house and the area, how to get there, what to expect, and things to do in the area. We were expecting the beach road to be in much worse condition than it was; it was really no problem at all to drive on (better than the highways around Baltimore, where we live!). The caretakers were very sweet and helpful, and stopped by every day to see if we needed anything. It was windy for our whole visit, so we didn't get to enjoy snorkeling as much as we'd hoped, but the wind meant very comfortable temperatures for sleeping at night and NO bugs (we didn't even see a single mosquito or fly). The dogs were lovely, especially the white deaf one—he adopted us and followed us on our walks up and down the beach every day. We loved the house, the beach, and Mahahual, and hope to come back soon. Thanks again, Whitney!

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This was our third trip to Mahahual and our third stay at Casita Dragonfly. Whitney does an excellent job of not only letting you know what to expect but also what to pack and what to be prepared for. The house itself is well cared for and maintained. The caretakers are sweet and attentive - if you aren't fluent in Spanish a translator app on your phone or tablet works great!

This is truly a get away from it all destination. Peaceful and quiet at the house yet there are great restaurants not very far away. If you miss the noise, crowds and hustle and bustle go into town on a day a cruise ship is there. You will remember quite quickly why you chose this casita! People watch until you get tired of it, eat, enjoy the in town beach and then go back to peace, quiet and tranquility.

Some of the things we enjoy while there, are fishing right from shore – caught fish quite easily and grilled red snapper for supper. Take a drive South on the beach road – long stretches of long, undeveloped beautiful beaches and in this area the reef doesn’t protect from waves so bodysurfing or boogie boarding is a blast. Take a trip to Xcalak – just to say you did it! Plus great food! Number one on the list to do is RELAX!

Big thank you to Whitney and Gerrit for sharing their slice of paradise with us!

The Robinson Crusoe view !!

  • 4 of 5

Thie is a great home to stay in especially if you are not the big hotel all inclusive type. Buy your own food and cook but also so many good restaurants in Mahahual.

Do not forget friday nights at Pizza Papi in Pueblo section.... authentique thin crust italian pizza and a free band with music from the 70's and 80's.

Whitney explains all very well and describes the home as you will see it.

The Mexican care takers next door are very nice persons and I felt very safe there.

Hahahual town 10K away from the beach road to town is fun to go to when you want to change beach and have a wider sand and swim area. I enjoyed the Blue Bay club beach facility with adequate free chairs etc. at the end of town near the lighthouse. This is a good option when you want to see less seaweed.

Also I would walk often from Dragonfly going south on the beach 30 minutes up to resort Almapiena and have Guacamole there with a cerveza on his terrace and also use his beach for a swim.

This house has a great upstairs bedroom especially if you like wind and beautiful sunrises in the morning to wake you up overlooking the ocean.

I enjoyed the front porch and the excellent WIFI access.

Only problem was the phone line for my cell and getting reception....Had to walk towards neighbor next door to get a good contact or sometimes the 2nd terrace of the dragonfly casita upstairs.

Otherwise we will be back to spend time again at my Robinson Crusoe home!

I recommend for couples of any age group who like off the beaten track but with all amenities and comfort.

It was a great vacation. :)
