About Joan deLugo

I am originally from Canada and I now reside in Boston and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Villa Blue Sky is my retreat to relax and enjoy the warm sun with family and friends. When I am not there it is yours to enjoy! My sister and brother in law live across the street from Blue Sky and manage the vacation rentals. They will check you in, answer any questions and help you out if you need anything during your stay!

Joan deLugo purchased this house in 1997

Why Joan deLugo chose East End

After visiting my sister who lives across the street from Villa Blue Sky I bought the house in 1997. Blue Sky has become the get together spot for family and friends. Blue Sky is smack dab in the middle of the best vacation area of St. Thomas for beaches, restaurants, and the ferry to St. John.

What makes this house unique

Blue Sky is located in the most convenient areas of St. Thomas. Halk mile to Secret harbor resort which is open to the public and offers the best snorkeling in the bay. My sister Joanie lives across the street from Blue Sky and can check you in and give you some local tips for your stay!

Guestbook comments from the manager

My family and I stayed here for a family reunion in July 2015 and this was the best property we have ever stayed at. We loved the open concept living/dining/ kitchen area as it allowed al to be together for entertaining.

The kids could take the 10 minute walk to Secret Harbor on the quiet street so it gave us lots of flexibility.

Our favorite part was the dining alfresco on the patio admiring the beautiful view to the ocean.

I have already rebooked to return with a group of girlfriends.

A fantastic week on the East End of St. Thomas

  • 5 of 5

We had never been to St. Thomas before deciding to spend 6 days there in March/April. There aren't all that many hotels on the island, so a home or condo definitely looked like the way to go. We wondered about East End vs the north side of the island, but decided being close to the various things on the East End (including ferry terminal at Red Hook) would work best for us, particularly because we were traveling with a 6 month old and didn't want to get stuck too far from the house. Turned out to be a great choice for us.

Choosing this particular house was a bit random, but was an incredibly fortuitous decision! This is a fantastic place that worked wonderfully well for our family. It is situated on the hill (as all of the houses on the island are - there are almost no houses right on the beach) overlooking the harbor and ferry dock at Red Hook - a very nice sight to wake up to in the morning. Secret Harbour Beach is just down the hill, perhaps an 8 or 9 minute walk, and we found that to be a great little place to hang out as well.

The house itself worked perfectly for us. 3 bedrooms, each with a queen or double bed, and one of the bedrooms has an extra twin if needed. The kitchen was very nicely equipped, and the living room with a great view was spacious and very comfortable.

Working with the manager was very easy. She was very responsive to email and since she lives right across the road she was both accessible and very helpful with recommendations on all sorts of things.

Perfect Home Base for Your Island Adventures

  • 5 of 5

Blue Sky is a wonderful home base for your trip to the Virgin Islands. It sits on Ridge Road, overlooking Vessup Bay off the back porch with views of the Caribbean out the front door and across the street. The neighborhood is quiet, with only the occasional traffic passing on the way to or from the Secret Harbor beach and resort just down the hill. While the drive back downtown is quick, you will also be minutes away from the Red Hook ferry terminal and easy access to many other islands.

You will find the house clean, secure, and well equipped. With a full kitchen (including a nicely stocked spice pantry) and a grocery store just minutes away, you do not need to rely on restaurant food if you do not want to. There are appropriate security features but the area is so safe and quiet that they must simply be there almost exclusively for deterrence.

Joanie was 100% honest and cordial in her dealings. She was helpful and available without being intrusive, and she gave generously of her local knowledge. She even provided us an excellent reference for a babysitter.

Rent Blue Sky with confidence.

Specific tips:

If you can take your eyes off the harbor, spend some time studying the trees below the back porch. You might just find an iguana or two soaking up some sun.

Ludy's Place is a food truck that is parked to the left of the Food Center parking lot as you look at it from the road. The ladies there serve up delicious food at a reasonable price. It was so good we ate there twice.

Check the cruise ship schedules online. While we were there, Saturday was a no-cruise-ship day so we ventured downtown to walk around. We stumbled onto a great open-air market and got to enjoy a small taste of callaloo while listening to one of the great Caribbean sounds: Men playing dominos and arguing about it. I rarely feel so happily far from home.

Nice property

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at this property Thanksgiving week and because I heavily rely on reviews when choosing properties, I am providing some pros and cons.

Pros: Location is really good and near the Red Hook ferry to St. John. There is easy access to supermarket, stores, restaurants but you will need a car to get to these places but not far away. There is a very close beach - Secret Harbour with some very good restaurants. The beach is OK. We ended up going over to the Ritz Carlton for lunch and stayed at their beach which was much nicer. We enjoyed the internet and coffee cafe directly across from the house. It had just opened 6 weeks ago and the owner was very nice. Communication with Joanie, house manager, was good from the booking to the arrival and the house had a lot of the items you would need especially if you wanted to cook or needed to clean. The description is accurate, just be clear though that the house is not air conditioned! After the first day, we adjusted, but the first night was hot along with the Mosquitos, it was an adjustment for sure.

Cons: For the price, I would consider other properties and their amenities and try to get on a beach property. There were two bathrooms and in one of the bathrooms the hot water faucet did not work and was not offered to be fixed after letting Joanie know. We had to get hot water from the tub in that bathroom. The welcome binder from Joanie stated that daily complimentary housekeeping was provided. However, this is not correct. The property was clean when we arrived and they clean only after you leave. Also, if you need to use a dryer, which you will if you stay, 4+ days! there are messages all over asking you not to do so due to the cost of electricity. Again, with what you are paying each night, I am not sure if this is necessary. Also, below the house, they rent out apartments or rooms so be sure to ask beforehand who will be on the property. We never heard the lady below us, who Joanie told us about the day we arrived, but if you have small kids like we did that liked to play around the property, it is nice to know beforehand. Overall, it was nice and clean but felt a bit dated and worn. If we return, we would more than likely look for another property.

Owner's Response: Rachel, Thank you for taking the time to post your review of Blue Sky. We feel that we offer a clean, comfortable good value vacation rental property for the Virgin Islands with a fantastic view. I feel compelled to respond to a few of your comments just to clarify to other travelers. A/C. The house sits on the top of a breezy hill and the nighttime temp is in the low 70's. A/C is not typical in Caribbean houses on a hill and is not included in any of our descriptions of the property. During the winter many people ask for more blankets. Yes, the hot water tap in the 2nd bathroom was not working. I spoke with the plumber and we both felt that for the remaining 3 nights of your 4 night stay fixing it at this time could possible be a major inconvenience to you. I am sorry that we were not able to fix the hot faucet during your stay. Mosquitos; In the Caribbean there is really no place that is mosquito free. The house is completely screened and we provide all of lotions and spray complimentary. Housekeeping: The info binder in a the house states that for week long stays housekeeping is provided every 7 days. This is very typical of vacation rental house. Clothes dryer. The V.I pays the highest utility rates in the world. Yes, we try very hard to keep the electric down so we can continue to offer the value rental rates that we do. An indoor convenient clothes line is provided as an alternative for those that prefer not to use the dryer. Castaway 1 bdrm apt. There is a 1 bdrm apt on the ground floor. It has it's own separate driveway, entrance and deck. The house is concrete so the sound does not carry between the 2. Ritz Carlton: All of the beaches and resorts in the Virgin Islands are open to the public and I am glad that you were able to enjoy lunch and the beach at the Ritz. The Ritz is truly a beautiful property. I am sorry that you will not be staying with us again and I hope that you find a beachfront property that has all the amenities that you want.

Wonderful Caribbean Vacation at Blue Sky Villa !!!

  • 5 of 5

My wife Judith and I recently returned from a most relaxing two week vacation on the island of St. Thomas with the spacious Blue Sky Villa as our "Caribbean Home!" The Villa was just as depicted with regard to appearance, amenities, and location! Blue Sky Villa was extremely well maintained, and very clean when we arrived! The expansive balcony overlooking Red Hook Marina, (less than five minute drive away) provided magnificent views, comfortable breezes, and a wonderful way to enjoy morning coffee, or evening glasses of wine!

The Villa is very tastefully decorated with "Caribbean themes" and colors and the furnishings and bed that we used in the Master Bedroom was most comfortable! The kitchen was well-stocked and boasted every amenity! Diane, the owner, and her sister, Joanie, were extremely gracious, kind, and helpful in providing recommendations, not only about the locale, but the entire island of St. Thomas and the neighboring island of St John, that enhanced our entire vacation experience!

Secret Harbor Beach (wonderful for snorkeling with it's calm, clear water) is a short ten minute walk away! The villa is located less than a 30 minute drive to the magnificent Mahogany Run Golf Course (featuring the famous Caribbean "Devil's Triangle" Holes 13/14/15,) and the marvelous Magen's Bay Beach (Judith's Favorite) for sunbathing and swimming!

The fun-loving town of Red Hook with it's Happy Hour Bars and Ferry Port to St John's is less than a five minutes drive! Pesci's offers exceptional fine Italian dining and Fishtails delectable fresh seafood!

Once again, our stay at the Blue Sky Villa was wonderful! The villa has a very nice flat screen television, and although it did nothing to detract from our stay, please note that at the time we stayed, there was no hookup for "television programming" of any kind-- No news or local channels or cable TV. We were however able to watch DVD movies that we brought with us, and there were 20-25 other movie offerings available as a "DVD movie library" at the Villa! We were able to enjoy the Super Bowl

live at Molly Malones Pub in Red Hook with many other diehard football fans!

The WIFI/Internet connnection was superb and deeply appreciated! We were very easily able to SKYPE to our family members back in Wisconsin!

In closing, ...Thank You so very much, Diane, Joanie, and Robert for your gracious hospitality , and for making the Blue Sky Villa available as our "Caribbean Home" on beautiful St Thomas!

We selected Blue Sky based on the location, but had an excellent stay for many other reasons... we had three couples and the accomodations were perfect. The house had everything we needed and we have only compliments and accolades for the stay and the value we received.

I visit St. Thomas frequently (4-6) times per year and will stay here if I can from now on.

Highly recommended!
