Halaula Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

That's pronounced "Ha-La-Va". The letter "W" in Hawaiian is pronounced like the "V" in English. It means to hold and to carry. It's the Hawaiian name for the small valley where the cottage is situated.

This beautiful little cottage was custom built by the owners for the express purpose of sharing it with visitors from around the world. The setting is magical. With a Large screened lanai overlooking a flowing stream and tropical gardens, you'll never want to leave its peaceful environment. The fully equipped kitchen comes with everything you'll need for your culinary specialties. From the comfortable queen-sized bed you can step directly out onto the spacious, very private, open sun deck. There you'll find a romantic soaking tub for two, an outdoor shower and comfortable chairs to enjoy your morning coffee or tea.

You'll love the seclusion, but this doesn't mean you'll be isolated. The cottage is a quick 5 minute drive away from the small, but charming, towns of Kapaau and Hawi. These two towns are reminiscent of Old Hawaii and filled with lovely galleries, restaurants, a coffee shop in each and hospitable folks.

Travel three miles to the east of the cottage and you'll come literally to the end of the road. Here you'll encounter approximately 10 miles of deeply cut lush valleys that were once the breadbasket of the island and home to tens of thousands of Hawaiians. They're unpopulated now, and yours to explore. The first valley, Pololu, is a 15-20 minute hike down from the end of the highway to a spectacular rock-strewn black sand beach. Traveling west from the cottage, a 25-30 minute drive puts you at some of the finest, world class beaches of the South Kohala Coast.

The cottage has beach chairs, umbrellas, snorkels, masks and fins for your use. The immediate area has a variety of fun filled activities to enjoy. There are Eco-Adventure tours of the scenic valleys via zip-line or kayaks. Or if you prefer there's also all-terrain vehicle tours. A little farther away there are helicopter tours, horseback riding, golf, etc. We have it all!

The owners live just a mile and a half away and are ready to help make your stay perfect.

Charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

Halawa House was the perfect place to return to after a day of island exploration. Tropical plantings outside and creatively designed living space inside. Very comfortable and remote.

Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at David and Susans! We were in town for a wedding and as it happens, had some changes of plans and dates. David was always quick to respond and very accommodating! He even jumped our car when it died. During our three weeks on the islands, David was the only owner we met. We really appreciated him coming to meet us and have a chat about the area and history of his place. It's the perfect spot to get away from it all!

Thanks David and Susan!

Comfortable, spacious, restful lodging immersed in a stunning tropical garden

  • 5 of 5

We spent 3 days at Halawa House and wish that we had planned to stay longer. The house is spacious and has plenty of storage space, a comfortable bed, and a good shower. It has a very well-equipped kitchen and we cooked all of our meals. There is a large and pleasant screened porch with a couch and a table where we ate all of our meals. There are overhead fans in the bedroom and on the porch. The house is in a tropical forest and a nearby stream provides the soothing sound of running water. The extensive and very well-maintained garden is stunning--many different tropical flowers that we had never seen before, lime, mango, breadfruit, and papaya trees, banana plants, and spectacular ripe dragon fruit. It is a paradise for photographers. We ate papayas soaked in lime juice, both from the yard, and had our first taste of dragon fruit. David, the owner, was very helpful and he brought us gorgeous avocados from his yard. The house and yard were both so attractive that we abandoned some of our planned activities so that we could spend more time there. Highly recommended!

Rainforest Gulch

  • 5 of 5

Halawa House was a wonderful place to stay! Very comfortable, great screened in porch, sounds of running stream...even evening pig crossing sounds(wish we had seen them!). We hiked down to the black beach at end of road (also great place for sunrise!), took a afternoon trip to Mauna Kea, went to the farmers market, had a tasty dinner at Bamboo, but also just relaxed! Would recommend highly!

Thanks David & Susan!

A really special place for two

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I stayed at Halawa house for 4 nights as part of a big milestone birthday celebration on the Big Island and could not have asked for a better place. The charm, care, and detail in the home is truly unusual and, as advertised, really designed for a visitor to enjoy the island. We loved the screened in, spacious lanai, and cooked pretty much all our meals in the well-equipped kitchen. Loved the gracious shower and various seating areas after a long day out and about. The outdoor bath and shower is situated beautifully.

We loved the location at the very northern tip of the island, not far from the end of the road. We had great weather during our stay - a little rain at night, mostly sunny and warm during the days. The Pololu lookout and trail at the roads' end is spectacular, the nearby towns of Kapa'au and Hawi fun to explore, and we found it an easy drive to Kohala's resort area and beaches, and also the rancher town of Waimea. We even visited the nearby Mo'okini Heiau with our 4WD vehicle.

The traveler who is squeamish about insects or geckos may find this home a bit challenging - as the owner clearly states, being in a jungle rainforest paradise is not without all the realities of nature, so I do mention that, though it did not trouble us. Most homes I have stayed in while traveling in Hawaii have some exposure to the island fauna. The entire house is screened so you can get the open air experience without mosquitoes. If you want a hermetically sealed lodging, best stick to the expensive resorts (and even there, good luck).

David the owner checked in on us and made us feel welcome and valued. It was such a pleasure staying at Halawa House I really hope to return again, and I would definitely recommend it to my friends looking to visit this part of the Big Island.

Look no further...this is it!!!

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing amazing find! I have been coming to visit the Big Island, and particularly the North Kohala area (which is my absolute favorite part of the island), for several years and Halawa House is THE most magical place! A beautifully designed house...I would have loved to stay longer. Definitely planning on returning to visit and stay here again. David and Susan are lovely hosts and have done a wonderful job building this gem. (Be sure to check out the binder/book they have made for visitors...loaded with great information!)

Being able to hear the birds and the creek in front of the house while sitting on the screened lanai was perfection. I travelled by myself and stayed on my own here and felt very very comfortable. This area of the island is jaw-dropping gorgeous and having a place like Halawa House to come home to is absolutely ideal if you are looking for peace, rest, and relaxation. See you next year...I will definitely be back!!! :-)
