That's pronounced "Ha-La-Va". The letter "W" in Hawaiian is pronounced like the "V" in English. It means to hold and to carry. It's the Hawaiian name for the small valley where the cottage is situated.
This beautiful little cottage was custom built by the owners for the express purpose of sharing it with visitors from around the world. The setting is magical. With a Large screened lanai overlooking a flowing stream and tropical gardens, you'll never want to leave its peaceful environment. The fully equipped kitchen comes with everything you'll need for your culinary specialties. From the comfortable queen-sized bed you can step directly out onto the spacious, very private, open sun deck. There you'll find a romantic soaking tub for two, an outdoor shower and comfortable chairs to enjoy your morning coffee or tea.
You'll love the seclusion, but this doesn't mean you'll be isolated. The cottage is a quick 5 minute drive away from the small, but charming, towns of Kapaau and Hawi. These two towns are reminiscent of Old Hawaii and filled with lovely galleries, restaurants, a coffee shop in each and hospitable folks.
Travel three miles to the east of the cottage and you'll come literally to the end of the road. Here you'll encounter approximately 10 miles of deeply cut lush valleys that were once the breadbasket of the island and home to tens of thousands of Hawaiians. They're unpopulated now, and yours to explore. The first valley, Pololu, is a 15-20 minute hike down from the end of the highway to a spectacular rock-strewn black sand beach. Traveling west from the cottage, a 25-30 minute drive puts you at some of the finest, world class beaches of the South Kohala Coast.
The cottage has beach chairs, umbrellas, snorkels, masks and fins for your use. The immediate area has a variety of fun filled activities to enjoy. There are Eco-Adventure tours of the scenic valleys via zip-line or kayaks. Or if you prefer there's also all-terrain vehicle tours. A little farther away there are helicopter tours, horseback riding, golf, etc. We have it all!
The owners live just a mile and a half away and are ready to help make your stay perfect.

Gem in the Jungle
My wife and I spent Spring Break with the grandkids in Kona and, after dropping them off at the airport (with their parents), made a beeline to Halawa House for five days of alone time. As the subject says, what a gem in the jungle. David, your craftsmanship is superb. I would have wasted thousands trying to make those compound cuts on the beams. The setting is so serene, you might want to laze the day away. But, don't stick around the house too much. There's so much to explore. Hike the Pololu Trail and Awini Trail (for some distance). Also, Kamehameha Park is close and offers so much. I've never played golf and tennis within 15 minutes of each other. The newly restored 9 hole Kohala Golf Park community golf course is nothing but a wonderful walk in the Kamehameha Park. Plus, if you like exploring, you won't want to miss Kauhola Point, site of the old lighthouse. The shoreline is spectacular, and the whales weren't so bad either. Afterwards, get cleaned up in the outdoor shower and explore the shops, galleries, and restaurants of Kapaa'u and Hawi. We obviously had a wonderful time. Thank you David and Susan for your hospitality and for providing every detail. We will be back.....denny & cynde
Very Nice Hideaway
My wife and I just had a wonderful stay at David's wonderful home. We especially enjoyed the enclosed Lanai. I could draw every morning without waking my wife and in the evening she could relax on the couch while I drew some more. We were off to the beaches or hikes for most of the day. We look forward to returning next year and escaping the Oregon Coast Rains.
Private location with beautiful foliage
We loved the location of this beautiful hide-away house. The space was large, the bed was comfortable, all kitchen appliances full size, the lani was so peaceful, plenty of towels and hot water. The outdoor shower was the best with lots of water pressure. We loved all the foliage around and the creek below hearing a bull frog and birds. It was a short drive to Pololu Valley (great hike early in the morning) and about 1/2 hour to beautiful beaches. This place is a hidden gem!
Perfect Hawaii relaxed getaway!
Great host, great location, great set up. Its not the Fairmont but that's not why you are booking here! If you want to harvest fruit out your back door and have breakfast after a great morning hot tub (or save for after a day of hiking the Pololu Valley!).
Thank for the use of this wonderful gorgeous fabulous place. We would come back in a heartbeat. Everything was spot on (well, we'd love it if there were some glass wine glasses) and the site is magical. Between the bird songs in the morning and the fruit trees surrounding the property, pretty hard to beat this little slice of heaven.
Thanks for letting us enjoy it!
So glad you enjoyed your stay. We’d love to have you back any time. As for glass wine glasses, we’ve tried them many times but with concrete floors and countertops and a granite tabletop, they don’t last long. Then we deal with tiny slivers of glass that turn up in bare feet long after the glass is gone. I feel your pain....I hate plastic glasses too. Is there a better solution?
A great place in north Hawai‘i
This is a very special place in the rain forest of north Hawai‘i! David & Susan are gracious hosts and their place is roomy and very comfortable. We enjoyed sitting and looking at the beautiful gardens and fruit trees that surround this home. Of course this is the rainy side of Hawaii so expect rain most nights, which makes this side so lush and beautiful! Be aware of the fact that because you are in a rain forest, you must take care to clean up and store your food, if not the ants will have a heyday. All in all this was a special place and we are thankful for the opportunity to stay here!
Although we're officially in the Kappau district, we're also very close to the adjacent town of Hawi.
