About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

That's pronounced "Ha-La-Va". The letter "W" in Hawaiian is pronounced like the "V" in English. It means to hold and to carry. It's the Hawaiian name for the small valley where the cottage is situated.

This beautiful little cottage was custom built by the owners for the express purpose of sharing it with visitors from around the world. The setting is magical. With a Large screened lanai overlooking a flowing stream and tropical gardens, you'll never want to leave its peaceful environment. The fully equipped kitchen comes with everything you'll need for your culinary specialties. From the comfortable queen-sized bed you can step directly out onto the spacious, very private, open sun deck. There you'll find a romantic soaking tub for two, an outdoor shower and comfortable chairs to enjoy your morning coffee or tea.

You'll love the seclusion, but this doesn't mean you'll be isolated. The cottage is a quick 5 minute drive away from the small, but charming, towns of Kapaau and Hawi. These two towns are reminiscent of Old Hawaii and filled with lovely galleries, restaurants, a coffee shop in each and hospitable folks.

Travel three miles to the east of the cottage and you'll come literally to the end of the road. Here you'll encounter approximately 10 miles of deeply cut lush valleys that were once the breadbasket of the island and home to tens of thousands of Hawaiians. They're unpopulated now, and yours to explore. The first valley, Pololu, is a 15-20 minute hike down from the end of the highway to a spectacular rock-strewn black sand beach. Traveling west from the cottage, a 25-30 minute drive puts you at some of the finest, world class beaches of the South Kohala Coast.

The cottage has beach chairs, umbrellas, snorkels, masks and fins for your use. The immediate area has a variety of fun filled activities to enjoy. There are Eco-Adventure tours of the scenic valleys via zip-line or kayaks. Or if you prefer there's also all-terrain vehicle tours. A little farther away there are helicopter tours, horseback riding, golf, etc. We have it all!

The owners live just a mile and a half away and are ready to help make your stay perfect.

Loved it.

Very comfortable place in a beautiful, private setting. Good mattress, plenty of hot water, well equipped kitchen... really everything you might need has been anticipated and provided by David and Susan. I honestly can't say I've ever booked a rental as thoughtfully kitted out as this one.

Wonderful! Thank you for your aloha, David and Susan.

Unique cottage in beautiful North Kohala

  • 5 of 5

Wow, what a great place! It exceeded our expectations in everyway. Although the photos and reviews promised a beautiful setting they did not do it justice...sitting on the screened-in lanai was like being in a tropical botanical garden! The house is very comfortable, well equipped, and beautifully hand built by the owners. David and Susan...thanks for sharing!

Home away from home....

  • 5 of 5

Spent a wonderful month at this peaceful property. Everything just felt so comfortable . We enjoyed the garden ...and it's juiciest, tastiest grapefruits ever .. And the avocados from the stand down the road were sooooo goooood.

Little town of Hawi is charming. The coffee shop has really good ice cream. Beaches are less than half an hour away and for fresh fish, we'd stop at "Da Fish House" on the way back.

Would love to go back !!!!

Beautiful and serene. We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first home away from home while on the Big Island, and we loved it so much. If you want to get away from the big hotel, tourist areas this is the place to do it. I loved the lushness of the surroundings, the lovely stream right outside the windows of the lanai, and the quiet feel of the nearby towns. It's a great place to stay for exploring both the north end of the island and the Kona beaches, especially those north of Kailua/Kona. We didn't get the chance to meet Susan, but David was great, very welcoming and helpful. The grapefruit was ripe on the tree during our stay and it was incredibly delicious. The house and grounds are even more beautiful than the pictures show, and the feel of the place is wonderful. I highly recommend staying at Halawa House. I would come back again in a minute, and hope we get the chance to someday. We'll stay longer next time!

Beautiful. Private Rainforest getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This little cottage was exactly what we expected it to be thanks to the great pictures and reviews. It is a perfect place for a single person or a couple to get away from the rat race and enjoy the sound of the creek, birds and geckos. This is not a resort; this is old Hawaii. The air is very humid. There was no cell range for us but there was intermittent wifi. There is no TV. This was all a positive for us! A great opportunity to sit and read, and enjoy the solitude. The screened lanai is lovely. The cottage is decorated with neat items from antiques to Hawaiian memorabilia. The water is hot, the bed is comfortable, the outdoor shower is lovely. The cottage and grounds were very clean and tidy. There were fresh papaya and grapefruit on the trees in the yard. The hosts are lovely and since our flight left at 11pm that night and the cottage was not being rented the next day, we were told we could stay longer than out checkout time of 11am. We didn't see a soul from our cottage during the entire stay other than when the host stopped by the first morning to answer questions. The Hawi market on Saturday is a great place to buy local produce. The hike into Pololu Valley is amazing, and the hike up the other side with a view of the next valley is breathtaking. So much to say! So much attention to detail in the cottage itself. Yes we will stay again someday. Thanks for a lovely stay!
