In the XIIIth century, "the way of the water" that is to say the navigation on the Garonne is reopened. So that a very small number of inhabitants will try to settle there first as fishermen, then as sailors. It is the latter who, around 1280, lay the first foundations of the Magisterium.

The popular tradition is that the name of the Magisterium is that of the woman who ran an inn on the banks of the river with her husband. This one was most certainly master of the boat, the pilot named magister, his wife was therefore the Magistero. Little by little the name of the inn becomes the name of these few grouped dwellings; a general name is substituted for the particular name to become a place name. And Clermont will henceforth designate under the name of The Magisterium (in two words) the small grouping of the banks of the river which depends on him.
