Amazing place and people
Let me start off by saying the Bruce and Jolene are fantastic people. The only negative about the place is the 100+ steps from the bottom, but without the elevation, you wouldn't have the amazing view. After the 3rd day, it didn't seem so bad. The infinity pool overlooking the bay is great for cooling off on those hot days. The sunset views from the deck are amazing! Bruce took us out on his catamaran, which was a blast. I highly recommend doing that. We had great massages at the house on two different days from a couple who live a few houses down. All four of us highly recommend getting the massages from this great couple. After our second set of massages, they actually told us that they were bringing dinner over for us and then invited us to join them at a local hangout that evening. Besides the great hospitality at the house, pretty much everyone we encountered in Savusavu were extremely friendly as well. The house was well equipped, had amazing views and great people to answer questions, give guidance about the town, restaurants and things to do around the area. There is decent snorkeling right across the street. You can walk to the near by Jean-Michel Cousteau resort for drinks/food. If I ever make it back to Fiji again, I will definitely be staying at the House of Bamboo.
It was a pleasure to meet you, Ann, Carl and Olga. We enjoyed spending time with you and swapping stories. You were very tidy, respectful, friendly and conscientious guests who we would love to have stay with us again. Please do keep us in mind for a return trip, it would be wonderful to see you all again.
Vinaka vaka levu from all of us at Pirate’s Paradise!!!!
Gorgeous view but watch the extra charges
We booked both the House of Bamboo and the Pod House for a group of 5 adults in one family. We stayed here during cyclone Keni which wasn't the perfect time but you can't plan the weather. The cyclone contributed to loss of electricity, dirty water and no hot water, which added a bit of a downer when added to the bad weather and poor visability for diving which is why we had returned to this location. On a positive note there were books, DVD's and some board games provided which provided some entertainment.
It was very nice to have some basic supplies such as milk, water, coffee, tea and sugar when we arrived later than expected due to flight delays. Being a Sunday the shops had all closed by the time we arrived in town to shop for supplies which we weren't told about during our check-in. There are plenty of places to eat out and our favourite was Arun's Taste of Hidden Paradise which was Indian and very authentic.
Our first day and the day before the cyclone arrived we used the 2 standup paddle boards and double kayak, thinking that they were included in our hire of the house. We thought we could use these at any time and would have used them much more BUT we then got a bill for $80 FJ (A$50). When you pay so much to hire both houses for 7 nights you really don't expect to be charged to use surf craft that are just lying around the property, especially when we carried it to the beach and back again and didn't require supervision. We also had a green pool which wasn't that nice to swim in - I needed to ask the owner to put some chlorine in. I won't return to this property which is a shame as it could have been so much better if the owner wasn't so greedy.
It was great to meet you and your family. I'd like to take this opportunity to respond to your review.
We at Pirate's Paradise do our utmost best to accommodate our guests and their needs. We pride ourselves on the total privacy offered.
As you mentioned, Tropical Cyclone Keni severely affected us and many others in Fiji who incurred damage due to flooding and gale force winds. Some people lost their entire homes and nine people lost their lives.
Tropical Cyclone Keni brought strong winds and heavy rains, which in addition to unplanned power outages, contributed to the imbalance of our pool chemicals as our filter and pump could not run. As soon as you made me aware of this, it was corrected to your satisfaction.
With regards to the kayaks and paddle boards, your group was informed upon arrival that we supply complimentary snorkel gear and rent of the paddleboards and kayaks are at $25 FJD per day. This fee covers initials costs plus damage like broken skegs and paddles which happens frequently.
I am certainly NOT a greedy person, in fact I'm extremely generous and if you had mentioned that you were not comfortable paying the rental fee, I would have waived it for you because guest satisfaction is my highest priority!
We provide a self catering and private environment for our guests to do as they please. I think that you would be more comfortable in a resort environment where they do everything for you.

Breathtaking and beautiful views and little slice of heaven
The house is situated on a hill top. It’s bright and airy and has an island 🌴 vibe about it. The views is breathtaking and you just want to sit on the balcony or in the pool and look at the sea 🌊.
The house feels like a home away from home.
The staff are very friendly, efficient and engaged in making your stay the best possible.
I highly recommend this slice of heaven to everyone.
Thank you for staying with us Ann-Margrete and Jesper. It was a pleasure meeting you and getting to know you both. You were very tidy, considerate and friendly guests and we would not hesitate to accept a booking from you in the future. Hope you will return! Vinaka, Jolene.
Incredible view, amazing property, wonderful people. Loved it!
My husband and I stayed in the house of bamboo for our honeymoon and we absolutely loved it. Jolene was waiting for us at the airport when we arrived and drove us back to the house. On the way she pointed out all of the places that we could buy the things we would need during our stay. When we got to the house her and Tom helped us carry our bags up the many stairs. The first time I saw that view at the top I was blown away, it is stunning! Well worth the climb. Jolene gave us a quick tour of the home and left us to it.
We spent the majority of our time in Savusavu at the house. We absolutely loved the pool. The fans kept the house cool enough for us even though it was very hot outside. We loved to sit out on the deck to eat our meals. After dark the bugs come out so we used the bug spray they provided which worked great. While we were there the pod house was empty for a few days so we were able to go in and look at that one as well. What beautiful houses. The Pod House is a different style, while it is beautiful and has a pool as well, we were glad that we chose the House of Bamboo. The view and pool make it the best. We rented the Kayaks twice, its great to get a view of the town and hills from out on the water. It is 125 stairs from the road up to the house, you definitely get your workout in! During our first trip into town, we had some culture shock, the Fijian way of life grows on you quickly. One evening we called ahead to Cousteau's and went down for a drink. We went on a ride to Labasa and back, stopping at the Cobra Temple, a village, and waterfall. We also went on a sail with Bruce, what an experience! The snorkeling is incredible, Fiji is abundant with reef! A lot of the beach near the house is rocky but we found that if you walk around the point of Cousteau's the beach is awesome. We spent time on the beaches in front of the house and resort.
We loved chatting with Bruce and Jolene whenever we came down to go to town, snorkel, or spend time on the beach. They are both friendly and fun to be around! We had a few medical needs during our stay and they did all they could to help. They always checked with us to make sure everything was working at the house and that we were enjoying our stay. Bruce has a sweet dog that we completely adored and giving her some love whenever we saw her was fun!
We are so glad that we chose the House of Bamboo for our stay in Savusavu. You can't go wrong with this house.
Jolene is very helpful & sweet. She picked us up from the airport and stopped at the grocery store on the way to the house so we’d have something to eat after arriving. She also happened to be heading towards the airport when we were leaving & gave us a lift back too. There was a nice starter pack when we arrived: fruits, juice, milk, bottled water & toiletries. The pool is fantastic and there’s a great view from it as well as the veranda. Outdoor lighting at the pool at night is minimal unless you use the large floodlight. The light in the actual pool was out & found out they were waiting for a new bulb from the main island. Unfortunately the daybed in the bure by the pool was unusable for us b/c birds would swoop in and poop on it and then ants would swarm it.
There wasn’t any a/c in the house, but it was still nice & cool with cross breezes – even at night. We didn’t have any issues with mosquitoes in the house but we made sure to keep the doors closed. The kitchen was well appointed & had everything we needed. Expect to have small ants & geckos in the house due to the tropical climate. Bug spray was provided. It's quite dark around the house which gives a sense of calming solitude but bring a flashlight if unknown noises & bugs at night weird you out. We found it relaxing. Overall, everything at the house was great.
Note that you may need to vacate the house at 9:00am if guests are arriving for that day. We ending up renting a day room at Daku resort which worked out very well. We hung out at the pool & were able to shower/get ready for our return flights home in the afternoon.
Laurie and Michael were great guests !
Thank you for staying with us and hope to see you back in the future.
Amazing view - worth the walk up all the stairs.
Overall the impression was good, however, the property is showing a number of signs of age - Warping in the doors, which allows mosquitos into the house, the bure daybed needed a good cleaning, if you are planning on using the downstairs bedroom - be prepared for the pool pump and filter noise as it's right outside the window, the hot water is very hit and miss - mostly miss, & some of the fittings (blinds and fans) were broken. But wow! what a view, and the infinity pool is amazing
We are sorry you felt The House of Bamboo is worthy of a 3 out of 5 star review, this is extremely concerning to us as we've had nothing but perfect reviews for both our properties. I would like to address the issues you have raised. Regarding the warp in the door, yes there is a slight warp but not significant enough to allow mosquitoes to enter the house. You were advised upon check in to keep all doors closed during the day to keep the mosquitoes out. The entire house is mosquito screened therefore the only way a mosquito might've entered, is if the door was left open. We supplied bug spray and personal repellent in the event of a random mosquito and there was also an electric bug zapper should the need arise. The bure daybed is thoroughly cleaned prior to any check in, this is 100% guaranteed by me as I assisted with house keeping duties that day whilst training a new cleaner. Yes the pool pump and filter does create charming background buzz, but we have not received complaints and as you were staying upstairs, I'm surprised this was an issue for you. The hot water, as was explained upon check in, was intermittent but we have now fixed that issue as we were waiting on a particular valve to arrive from overseas. The blind (singluar) that was akimbo has now been straightened and please note the fan that is claimed was broken, is in fact working. We would've love the opportunity to address these issues while you were staying with us. The only mention that you were not satisfied was as you were getting in your car upon check out. We hope that you will return to The House of Bamboo and it really was a pleasure meeting you both. Best regards, Jolene.
The House of Bamboo is located in an area known as Lesiaceva, a short stroll from Cousteau Resort and approximately 6 kms from the township of Savusavu. Set on the tranquil shores of Savusavu Bay. On Fiji's second largest Island, Vanua Levu. This area is known as The Hidden Paradise, cliche-ish but true. Here you will experience true Fijian hospitality and really feel like you are somewhere off the well trod tourist trails. Some say that Savusavu is reminiscent of parts of Hawaii well before it became what it is today. Savusavu can be accessed by air from Nadi with Pacific Sun. There are also regular ferries from Lautoka and Suva. Once you arrive you can relax and unwind or arrange for fishing, diving or sailing charters. Maybe even visit the local Black Pearl farm or just laze around and rediscover the art of relaxation. Airport pick up from Savusavu airport is included in your tariff, as is a provision starter pack and free local calls and wifi broadband internet access. Other Activities: lazing in your own hammock, sleeping in an outdoor bure or just taking a dip in the pool.
