About the property

Grade II listed 2 bedroom cottage in the Chilterns AONB with countryside view

OLD ROSE COTTAGE is a 4 star AA rated grade II listed red brick holiday cottage located in the picturesque village of Turville (home to the TV serie The Vicar of Dibley) in the in the Hambleden Valley, in the heart of Chiltern Hills. Designated as an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" the Hambleden Valley has some of the most spectacular and characteristic Chiltern scenery: high ridges, beech woods, sweeping dry chalk valleys yet it is only 20 miles from Oxford and 25 miles from Heathrow.

This unspoilt, beautiful location offers a wide range of attractions to suit the whole family: from the finest walking and cycling paths in the Chilterns to boat trips and picnics along the nearby river Thames, visits to grand stately homes and shopping in the pretty riverside market towns of Marlow and Henley.

Old Rose Cottage dates back to the 16th century and it has been sympathetically renovated to provide all comforts while preserving its character. It's open all year and provides self-catering accommodation for up to 4 people in two bedrooms (a double and a twin). We hold a 4-star rating with Visit England and we are assessed every year. The cottage is arranged over two floors, both bedrooms are upstairs and downstairs there is a lovely sitting room, a spacious kitchen/diner and a bathroom.

The two double bedrooms and stairway have original oak beams, the oak cottage style kitchen/dining room is spacious and fully equipped and the sitting room has a magnificent inglenook fireplace with log burner for cosy winter evenings in.

Lovely 4* cottage in quiet rural location yet close to Henley-on-Thames & Marlow
average rating of 3.6666667 based on 7 reviews

Very cosy cottage, in tranquil village nestling in pristine countryside.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very snug and cosy. The log burner is great and the pub in the village is about 100m and also has a nice ambiance, a roaring fire and good food. The village Nestle's in the valley surrounded by fields and forrest making for great walks up part the windmill or circling by other village pubs... If you want to just relax by the fire, enjoy good pub food and drink or go cycling and walking this is a treat you'll love... We had a lovely time. The village is within easy reach of the M40, Henley, High Wickham and several My properties too. Enjoy your stay

Uncomfortable place to stay & couldn’t wait to go back home.

  • 1 of 5

Very old cottage & could be comfortable upstairs & down. Upstairs was ok but downstairs the lounge is awful. The settee & chairs smelled very musty & so uncomfortable to sit in - it was ikea type settee full size which smelled like been left out in the rain for weeks - the lounge itself felt dirty. The floor covering in the kitchen was folded in places rumpled & unsafe to walk on. We couldn’t wait to go home & I would never ever recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Dear Carol, We would kindly refer you to the email below, sent the same day you contacted us after your stay at the property. As you never contacted us during your stay and never aknowledged our response, you gave us no opportunity to remedy matters. We always do our utmost to provide a prompt and effective remedy to issues which guests bring to our attention during their stay. We are very proud of our 4* AA rating which we feel is rightly deserved and make every effort we can to ensure that our guests enjoy their stay in this unique location. Friends and family are also regular visitors who ensure that everything in the property rightly fits with our aim to provide a home from home experience. The cottage is over 400 years old, grade II* listed and so the rooms are smaller, floors and timber framed walls are not flat and level unlike modern homes, which is part of the unique character of the property as is the truly quaint village where the house is located. Kind regards, Kate – Proprietor Old Rose Cottage Our email sent on 11th July 2018 Dear Carol, Thank you for your email and we are so sorry to hear that the cottage did not meet with your expectations. It is always difficult to deal with issues when they are brought to our attention after guests leave, when we no longer have an opportunity to address things. Any further details you can provide about the smell you mention would be helpful as the carpets and furnishings were professionally cleaned only last month. We have noted your comment about the comfort of the sitting room, although with limited space it is a compromise as it won’t accommodate traditional lounge furniture. The cottage has been receiving guests for over fifteen years with many repeat satisfied visitors, so it is a shame that on this occasion you were unhappy. We do value your feedback as every guest will have a different perspective and will look into any changes we can make. Kind regards, Francesca Property Manager at Old Rose Cottage

Gorgeous cottage in the Chilton Hills

  • 4 of 5

This was a lovely little cottage in the tiny village of Turville. It was a cosy, cute place to spend our time during a winter snowy weekend. The pub is the only 'shop‘ in town. Groceries are a few villages away. Two small bedrooms upstairs, with comfy beds & reasonable storage. Small living room with seating for 4. Wood burning stove in open fireplace for atmosphere, as central heating in all the rooms kept us warm. Well equiped kitchen even though small. Lots of walking in all directions & great scenery when driving around.

Owner's Response: Hello Margaret, It's been a pleasure to have you at the cottage and thank you for taking the time to give us your feed-back. I am sorry you found our sitting room not as comfortable as you expected; we have a cosy sofa, tub chairs to sit by the fireplace, plus tv, side tables and lamps and we have put great effort in making the living room nice and cosy. I wish you were a bit more specific about this, so to help us improve - and I sincerely hope you will visit us again soon.

A clean, comfortable and well presented little cottage in a quintessentially English village.

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful walks on the doorstep of this pretty little cottage. Several country pubs within easy walking distance and lots of interesting places to visit nearby. We spent a day at the Henley Literary Festival and enjoyed a beautiful riverside walk along the Thames Path.

Old Rose Cottage is located in Turville, in the heart of the Hambleden Valley, desiganted as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This tiny village is actually one of the most popular film and TV location of the country: St Mary, the village's church, is the church featured in The Vicar of Dibley, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was based at the Cobstone Windmill (which overlooks the village) and the serie Midsomer Murders is a regular visitor here at the village (to name just a few!) And it's easy to see why. Nestled in the Chiltern Hills, the postcard perfect village will give you the impression of stepping back in time with its tranquility and its delightful cottages, most of which date back to the 16th century. The unspoilt beautiful countryside of the Chilterns AONB offers fabulous walking and cycling opportunities, the River Thames is 4 miles away - and the restaurants, boutiques, museums and buzzing night life of Henley, Marlow, Thame, Wallingford and Oxford are just a short drive away. Or you can relax in front of the log burner and soak up the peaceful atmosphere of Turville!!

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES: a paradise for ramblers and cyclists, the breathtaking countryside of the Chilterns is without a doubt the best attraction of the area. The best way to explore the surroundings is walking or cycling; there are around 2,000 kilometers of trails scattered across the Chilterns to suit all levels of ability and 'motivation', and Turville is ideally placed to take advantage of quite a few of them! The breathtaking landscape is of gentle rolling chalk hills, dotted with small scale agriculture, woodlands, hedgerows and small traditional English towns and villages.

Closest to us are the Ridgeway Path, probably the oldest path in Britain, The Chiltern Way and Midsomer Murder Trails! Or you can follow England's best known river along The Thames Path.

The River Thames is just 4 miles away, and the area is famous for its rowing tradition (world famous Henley Royal Regatta takes place in July, Marlow Regatta happens in June) and there are plenty of canoeing, kayacking and sailing opportunities - as well as pic-nicking along the river. Golf courses are available in Henley (Badgemore Park Golf Club and Aspect Park Golf Club) and Marlow (Harleyford Golf Club) .

Hughenden Manor, home to Queen Victoria prime minister Benjamin Disraeli; Cliveden Estate overlooking the Thames; beautiful Greys Court and West Wycombe village are some of the National Trust properties you will find nearby, well worth a visit.

FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT Henley River & Rowing Museum, The Hellsfire Caves in West Wycombe, the Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden are just few of the must see places for families.

SHOPPING - SIGHTSEING - THEATRES - EATING OUT: Henley, Marlow, Watlington, Thame, Wallingford are all pretty historical market towns and feature interesting boutiques and independent shops as well as a choice of restaurants, pubs and gastropubs catering for every taste and budget. If it's culture you crave, Oxford is 20 miles away and theatres, galleries, museums and so many festivals and events you will be spoilt for choice happen in Henley and Marlow. Bicester Outlet Village is about 20 minute drive from the cottage.

- Unless otherwise specifically agreed at time of booking, check-in time is from 3 pm on the day you arrive and check-out time is by 10 am on the day you leave.
- No parties or event allowed at the cottage: Turville is a quiet peaceful place and we love it this way. The cottage is in a residential area so we'd ask you to show due consideration to our neighbors and ensure any noise is kept to a minimum between the hours of 11 pm and 8 am.
- Mobile phone reception is quite poor in Turville, as it is in most of the Hambleden Valley. Wi-fi in the cottage is provided at no extra cost and it works well.
- Old Rose Cottage is arranged on two levels, connected by a 10 steps carpeted stairway. It dates back to the 16th century and it is listed: uneven walls and wooden narrow passageways are part of the charm of the cottage, but it means that it may not be suitable for people with restricted mobility. Do contact us if in doubt.
- There are no shops within walking distance from the cottage - only glorious open countryside and a lovely pub serving great food (The Bull & Butcher).
Own transport strongly advised.
- Children are welcome at Old Rose Cottage - the majority of our guests are in fact families with children and kids of all ages, however there are potential hazards (like stairs and wood burning stove) therefore supervision is required and kids below the age of 16 should not be left alone in the cottage.
- Last but not least: we'd ask you to take good care of the cottage, to keep it clean and tidy and to leave in a similar condition as you found it upon arrival. It is your responsibility to ensure that proper precautions are taken at all times to keep yourself and the cottage secure: please lock all doors when the property is unoccupied, never leave an electrical machine to operate by itself, don't leave candles unattended and correctly dispose of any rubbish (food in particular).
Welcome notes, instructions, books and guides will be left for you in the cottage
