About Tom Watkins

I am working for an NGO that requires I spend time in Geneva, so am often out of New York.

Tom Watkins purchased this apartment in 1982

Why Tom Watkins chose Manhattan

Because it is in a great location from which the city's attractions are easily accessible -- steps off FifthAvenue between Flatiron, just to the south; Murray Hill, a block to the east; and Midtown, whose southern tip begins four blocks to the north. It's in the center of the Persian rug district, two blocks south of Korea Town and four blocks north of Madison Square Park.

What makes this apartment unique

A clean, quiet, calm, orderly and safe place of refuge that is within walking distance of many of New York's attractions.

Midtown Manhattan apartment

  • 3 of 5

The apartment was quite clean and comfortable. However heat had been turned off and it was very cold. We had to request a heater be delivered. The dishwasher was out of order so had to wash everything by hand. Because of the major construction going on all around the apartment, it was extremely noisy and loud. The location was excellent and the owner was quite communicative regarding our needs.

Owner's Response: Guilty on both counts: -- The building heat had been turned off by late April and the electric space heater that is stored in a closet in the apartment for just such occasions was not working. Within a couple of hours after our Arizona guests complained that they were cold, a new space heater had been delivered. I am sorry they had to endure the discomfort. -- Their comment about the noise is a fair one, but should not have been a surprise, since the description of the property notes that there is construction on the block. The workers begin at 7 a.m. and continue until late afternoon. The work does not extend into the evenings or nights.

Perfect retreat from the New York hustle and bustle

  • 5 of 5

This apartment was clean and spacious and provided everything two busy moms needed for a relaxing retreat. The room was easily 3 times bigger than the room we stayed in at the Marriott last time we were in New York. The mattress was incredibly comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we would have needed to cook if we had wanted to. The owner provided a wide variety of recommendations for food and shopping near the apartment. He was quick to respond to phone, text, and emails.

Thoughtfully designed space in a wonderful location (great bed, too!)

  • 5 of 5

This gem of a space was a quick walk from Penn Station and also nicely located close to a Trader Joe's for groceries. The space was clean and the bed extremely comfortable. There was plenty of space to spread out and do yoga on the soft area rug. The kitchen was incredibly well stocked - I cooked most of my meals with ease and couldn't help but notice the many varieties of coffee, oils and other goodies that had been provided/left by other guests.

There was a lint roller in the dresser and umbrellas in the closet, along with a myriad of other goodies that made it feel like a home, not a hotel. There were a variety of toiletries in the bathroom, in case something was forgotten. This apartment is on the top floor and there is no elevator, but I appreciated the exercise and that also got me above the street noise a little bit.

Thanks also to Tom for the excellent communication before my stay and also a thorough write-up on how to get to the apartment from any of the airports in the area as well as the nearest subway stops and eateries. I flew into Newark and getting to the apartment was a snap using the Airtrain from Newark Airport (there's a kiosk where you can buy tickets and a very helpful person to explain the system). One note: there's a Penn Station in Newark, New Jersey as well as in Manhattan, so be sure you choose the correct one when purchasing your ticket.

I absolutely loved staying at this space and will definitely do so again - Thank you, Tom!

Perfect in every aspect

  • 5 of 5

Everything was perfect. Location every single thing. The bed was amazing I have not slept that well and I can't remember what. When I am back in New York for work I will definitely do everything I can to reserve Tom's Place again.

Perfect size and location

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect fit for the two of us. The construction next door was loud, but obviously will end at some point. AND, if you're doing NYC vacation right, you're not just hanging out in an apartment anyway! Tom, thanks for all the tips and suggestions, they were so helpful! Definitely highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Guest is correct; the construction noise nearby can begin as early as 7 a.m. and continue until late afternoon. While it does not affect evenings or nights, guests who plan to remain inside the apartment during the day may want to consider another location until the work is completed.
