HI! I AM LUCY AND MY HUSBAND, MIKE, AND I OPERATE OUR VACATION RENTAL APARTMENT ON SAPELO. IN OUR OTHER LIVES MIKE IS A CONTRACTOR AND I AM A REALTOR WITH COASTAL PROPERTIES OF GEORGIA (912 437-2444. WE'VE BEEN LIVING ON SAPELO FOR 16-22 YEARS DEPENDING ON WHICH OF US YOU ARE TALKING TO. WE LOVE IT. SAPELO CAN PROVIDE TOTAL AND COMPLETE DOWNTIME-SOMETHING HARD TO GET IN TODAY'S WORLD. YOU FORGET HOW MANY STARS THERE ARE. NO TRAFFIC. NO LIGHT POLUTION. NO TEMPTATIONS TO STALK THE MALLS. WALK OUR BEACHES AND LET THE SUN, WIND, AND WATER WASH AWAY YOU CARES, FATIGUE AND FRUSTRATION.
Two friends and I needed to get away from the city to concentrate on writing and music composition projects. The retreat was perfect for our needs. The musicians had never seen a wild beach before and had a hoot driving the Jeep on dirt roads. The island itself offers a complete relief from urban life. Miss Lucy is a gracious and good-natured host. I can't recommend this place highly enough. We all wished we could stay longer and will probably make it an annual trip.
We have stayed in this cute and spacious apartment built above the house several times now. It is extremely clean and well kept and comfortable. We will definitely be staying here again on our next visit to Sapelo Island. Lucy is wonderful and informative and even let us use her jeep to travel around the island. Sapelo is a treasure and we found a gem of place to stay.
Wow, what a dream vacation. Lucy is such a sweet and personable host, and her "retreat" apartment was perfect for our family with two small children. We had such a wonderful time here for 5 days in April. The beaches are stunning and the flora, fauna and history of the island are terrific, too.
The Retreat: Comfy and exactly as pictured, the one-bedroom apartment is on the third floor and is accessible from an outside staircase. We ate most of our meals on the balcony, which is lovely, surrounded by trees and lots of birds.
The Island: Lucy lets guests borrow a vehicle, which is perfect for accessing the beaches and checking out the island. Note that visiting the north part of the island needs a special permit or joining a tour. I'd recommend doing at least one tour to see more of the island and get a sense of the history. The water is calm, and I want to try kayaking next time.
Tips for things to bring: beach towels, lots of sunscreen, food (you can put it in a crate or cooler to bring on the ferry). There is a store on the island that sells basic food and sundries/supplies, as well as ice cream treats so you won't go hungry if you don't bring food, but you'll have more selection if you bring at least some of your food. There is also a gift shop in the Reynolds mansion.
Lucy took excellent care of my girls. Highly recommend
We loved staying with Lucy and Mike! the apartment was perfect for us - had everything we needed - even wifi to the relief of the teenagers we had with us - the hot water also lasted log enough for several back to back showers. Having use of a car instead of just a golf cart was an extra perk. The island was amazing - beautiful and quiet. We checkecked out both beaches - the light house - the nature trails - Lula's kitchen - and the general store - all were lovely! We will absolutely be back
What a wonderful change of pace! We spent our time walking the beautiful beaches, preparing delicious meals and just spending time together without the distractions and interruptions of a more developed, commercial location. The moss covered oak trees made for an unforgettable landscape. Lucy took us on a very informative tour of the north end. Having her vehicle at our disposal made all the difference.
My Sapelo Retreat is on Sapelo Island which is 4 1/2 mi. from the mainland. On the Island there is only 1 small convenience store and a post office. Several of the things I have commented on are in the historic fishing village of Darien, a frequent overnight before the trip over to Sapelo. For instance, there is a great little salon and spa, Eternity Salon and Spa, in Darien. The restaurants I've commented on are in Darien and there is a fine gourmet wine and cheese store and wine bar there, Waterfront Wine and Gourmet on the waterfront on Broad Street. Some types of activities require hiring a guide, deep sea fishing, kayaking, scuba diving but I can connect you with the folks who do those things. Just ask! I'll be glad to answer your questions.
