The Bon Aire at Greenwood Cliffs on the Shoreline of Superior

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,700 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms,1 Bath, sleeper sofa, Sleeps 4-6

We are at the shoreline of Lake Superior, ½ acre of land with 200 ft of shoreline. There are steps to the ledge rock below where you can listen and watch the waves and catch the lake breezes. The changing nature of the lake will grab your attention and sometimes create a sense of awe. Since the property is on the shipping lanes leading to Duluth, you will see the huge boats of the lake, and also the fishing boats of the local restaurants.

The home has beautiful views of Lake Superior, the family room revealing a sun drenched panoramic view. Nature is on display through the various views of other rooms. A screened-in-porch, lakeside deck, outdoor seating, and patio dining enhance the outdoor experience. A screened in gazebo also offers solitude and refuge from everyday stress.

The main floor has two large bedrooms with comfortable mattresses and a sofa sleeper with view of fireplace and lake (sleeping for six people). The family room is adjacent to the kitchen and porch. There is also a dining room, piano, living room with original stone fireplace, and a TV room with leather couch, chair and ottoman, and views of the lake. For those who want to cook, the kitchen is fully furnished with cooking utensils and a electric stove and full sized refrigerator.

An additional option is available to sleep another 2 guests, the Nor Hus, our name for the overflow upstairs studio unit. The Nor Hus can be rented in conjunction with the main level except for 8 weeks/year. During 2017 a long term renter for the Nor Hus, a retiree will be on site from July 6th to August 31st . The Nor Hus provides an additional bed (full sized), kitchenette, small bath, large TV, lovely 2nd floor views of the lake, and a deck.

The two cities of Duluth and Two Harbors are within a 15 minute ride. Both cities offer festivals, shopping, and yearly events. Knife River is only 2 miles away and is the site of a large sandy beach, a marina, the Knife River, and the Superior hiking trail. Local smoked lake trout is available for you to buy, and fishing/boating excursions are for hire at the Knife River marina.

For those who want to dine out, there are fine restaurants in the immediate area, and other dining choices from the familiar to the unique.

Once you are here, you will wish you never had to leave. The charms of the North Shore are various and within a day’s drive from The Bon Aire at Greenwood Cliffs. As often as you visit, there is always more to explore. The natural beauty and rugged history are part of the experience.

Keywords: lower floor of home: see review Jan 8, 2011, renter may be on site.

About Chris Schousboe

My husband and I live in a condo in the heart of the Twin Cities. The Bon Aire is our spiritual refuge away from the noise and crowding of city life.

Chris Schousboe purchased this house in 2002

Why Chris Schousboe chose St. Louis County

I wasn't looking for a vacation home, but I ran across it online and fell in love with it. Some day we will retire to the Bon Aire. There is nothing else like the North Shore and Lake Superior.

What makes this house unique

The home is larger than most would predict with almost 1700 sq ft. This allows for privacy and room to spread out. A new remodel upstairs opens this area to downstairs renters for an additional fee.

The Lake! and then all the nice touches

  • 5 of 5

We booked this cabin because of it's proximity to Lake Superior, but I was pleasantly surprised at how really close the house is to a beautiful stretch of rocks and waves. From the large windows of the home, you can almost feel like you are on a houseboat. The property has a short, outdoor set of stairs just steps from the porch or kitchen door that leads to a private stretch of large rocks that a person can explore next to the water. It was beyond my expectations. Our March visit gave us one sunny, calm day and a couple of cloudy, windy, wavy days, and I was left to believe that any weather in that spot would have its own beauty. It's awesome. The sunrise each morning was beautiful too.

We ran a few miles each day in both directions on the scenic road that is part of the Grandma's marathon route. We enjoyed visiting breweries in Duluth, and one in Two Harbors. We saw Gooseberry Falls when it was likely at its peak for water flow. But just being able to relax in the house and on the property was the best. There are multiple places outdoors to sit and enjoy the lake--the owners have taken care to provide a comfortable, clean home indoors, and they have given attention to the outdoors as well.

One of the best locations on the North Shore, property is amazing!

  • 5 of 5

I have been a north shore visitor for 40+ years, and this property has a beautiful, close up (really close) location on the Lake. I visited in the winter, but plan on a summer or fall trip just to sit outside on the terraced lawn. The home is immaculate, very well furnished, its cozy and comforting, beds are amazing. Beautiful kitchen and sitting room, the views are awesome. The rest of the house, including bedrooms, are every bit as inviting. I would highly recommend this home to any one who wants a place right on the lake, just a piece of heaven on earth. I feel myself gushing, but it was one of the best experiences I have had.

Bon Aire on Lake Superior

  • 4 of 5

What a wonderful place to spend a February weekend -- lots of snow & beautiful views of Lake Superior! Being just outside Duluth, Bon Aire is easier to access than many other North Shore vacation locations.

It is well maintained and has plenty of space to spread out. All the common rooms face the lake and have large windows to take in the view.

The kitchen is well equipped, the fireplace is a beauty, there's plenty of card & board games and if you need a movie or Netflix fix you can do that as well.

The only CON: there's only 1 bathroom & if you had 4 adults, it might be difficult to navigate.

The owners were very easy to work with and very helpful when a snow storm hit.

We hope to come back during the summer months -- or again in the winter!

What a great spot!

  • 5 of 5

We made a last minute decision to head north for the weekend to get some much needed rest and relaxation. We've been overextended lately and needed a bit of Lake Superior time to unwind. Wow, were we glad to find this place. Chris was super helpful with our last minute booking and even called to make sure we had good directions to the house. The house is even nicer than the photos. The inside of the house is very nice with comfortable sitting areas, lots of space to spread out, and super comfortable beds. But, the view is the most outstanding feature. The house is full of windows overlooking Lake Superior! I could sit and watch that lake forever. There's easy access down to the rocky shoreline and lots of outdoor seating options for a warmer weather visit. The fireplace was wonderful at night and we spent the evenings with our feet up, reading and enjoying the fire. We'll definitely be back to stay again, I think we've found a new favorite spot!!
