Saint-Pierre:
It is the capital of the southern part of the island. The city serves as the gateway to the “wild south” and its lava flows, but it’s also an ideal hub for accessing tourist sites such as the Plaine des Cafres and the Plaine des Palmistes (1 hour), the Piton de la Fournaise volcano (1 hour), the Cirque de Cilaos (45 min). Hiking trails start from all of these sites. From Saint-Pierre, you can easily explore all of the island’s main attractions, thanks in particular to the nearby expressway; you can also relax on its beaches, indulge your taste buds at one of its many restaurants, or simply stroll along its landscaped waterfront while admiring the sunset….
Did you know? The island’s cirques, pitons, and ramparts have been designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010. A cirque is what’s known as a collapse caldera: these are the walls of Piton des Neiges, the volcano that gave birth to the island some 3 million years ago, which collapsed in on themselves. The breathtaking landscapes shaped by these geological events are simply spectacular.
