We had a lovely stay in this quiet, peaceful location. Jillyan was lovely to deal with and very helpful. The house is well set up and located just behind the main house. Kids loved the creek across the road and the stunning night sky. Great location for bushwalks and visiting the local beaches. Beautiful spot for a relaxing few days away from the city.

Basic Bush Retreat
A rustic, spacious retreat in the bush. Nature is all around. A Bach from a byegone era - a decent place to explore the Waipoua forest and Opononi area.
Jillian the host is very friendly and right outside the front door when you need her.

The property was in a VERY quiet spot, but has not been kept up, and the unit is 'tired' and needs repairs.
Very clean two bedroom house at back of managers house meant no allergies for our daughter for first time on our holiday- bliss! Jillyan was lovely - set the kids up to fish for eels with a line and eggs - much appreciated entertainment while mum relaxed in the serene bush environment. 15 min drive into Opononi meant it was perfect spot to explore the Hokianga but also easy day trip to see the Kauri and Kai Iwi lakes. Very comfortable beds and games for kids if a wet day. We will hope to stay again!

Okay Overall
1. Although rooms are spacious there is no air-conditioning / heat pump available. Host kindly provided 3 pedestal fans but were of no use in the afternoon when rooms got heated up like ovens.
2. Although it is advertised that linen, bedsheets and comforters are provided, host asked us to bring our own at the last moment which we did since we thought it was a precaution against covid. But after we reached the property, host gave the reason that there had been guests at the property back to back and therefore preferred to reduce the chore of washing. It seems the host has now added a comment to the linen section saying 'She may ask to bring own sheets etc'. This comment was definitely not there when we booked the property.
3. Rooms require thorough cleaning from cobwebs and dead bugs which especially were lining the windows and corners of the rooms.
4. We felt the utensils were not clean enough up to the standard we would expect from a running property on book-a-bach which have experienced so far over the years across NZ.

Thank you for your, not so positive response. I did give you my fan after you said that it was too hot for you to sleep at 3pm after your arrival. So, no other people have complained about not being able to sleep in the middle of the day. You had 2 large fans and 1 smaller one.
Great value, affordable accommodation with plenty of space for the family.
Quiet and relaxing. Centrally located for exploring the Hokianga.

Huge barn, plenty of space for the family, heaps of games for the kids, charming river at walking distance (kids went there with an egg to feed the eels), great artistic vibes. We were surrounded by great art works and welcomed by the artist who painted them: amazing experience. Jillian is not only a great host but also a super talented artist, it was a pleasure to stay there and we will definitely come back, for sure.
A little hard to find at first...the sign a little obscured by the garden but once we're introduced everything was great..Jillian such a good host and the place was clean and comfortable. Family friendly ❤ 💙
