Mountain High Cabin sleeps 10

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,000 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Mountain High is a 2,200 square foot log home with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and a large sleeping loft plus a covered deck with comfortable seating. It sleeps 6 in the bedrooms and 4 with ample room in the loft.

The cabin sits on 10 acres of forested land on the upper slope of a mountain overlooking Hahn’s Peak to the east and Wyoming and the Continental Divide to the north. The drive up to the cabin from 129 takes about 10 minutes and weaves through aspen and pine forests. The road is not paved so while sedans do drive up there, a car with adequate ground clearance is suggested.

The views are stunning: you can occasionally see hikers climbing Hahn’s Peak, and during thunderstorms in Wyoming you can see the sheet lightening illuminating the clouds and mountains in the distance. There is nothing quite like it. If you want to stay in the valleys of the Steamboat area, don’t stay here; this is true mountain living at its best. You look down at the world from here, not up.

Located on a private road used mostly in the winter by cross-country skiers, you will find total privacy and quiet: no cars whizzing by. Three bedrooms are located downstairs: two with queen sized beds and one with a double bed, plus two full bathrooms, one with an over-sized bathtub. On the main floor is a huge living room/dining room and kitchen surrounded on two sides by walls of windows. The dining room table sits 8 plus there is a second table that can join to it and add two more for a total of 10 seats at the table. An efficient wood stove is available for cold mornings, though the sun warms the place quickly. A circular staircase takes you up to a large sleeping loft with two beds and several Japanese futons. A large deck with cushioned patio chairs and a table sits outside the living room on the Hahn’s Peak side of the cabin. A large BBQ grill on the patio is available for your use. There is also a a fire circle just below the house that can be used to grill food (or marshmallows!) outside on cool evenings.

Games such as Pictionary, chess, checkers, Monopoly, Global Pursuit, backgammon and others are stacked on shelves in the living room. A stereo system with CDs, books, and a small selection of some very difficult puzzles are also available, plus a large chest full of children’s toys and art supplies up in the loft. This is an artist’s residence so you are surrounded with antiques from Asia and South America as well as paintings and other artworks.

Within a few miles you will find Pearl Lake, Steamboat Lake, Hahn’s Peak Lake, hiking galore, and Hahn’s Peak village for restaurants, a gas station, and other amenities. The Hahn’s Peak area is known for fishing, hunting, waterskiing and boating, biking and mountain biking, horse back riding, ATV tours, and of course, viewing wildlife.

A 5 minute walk back through the woods gives you a view of Steamboat Lake, Pearl Lake, Hahn’s Peak Village, and Steamboat Mountain in the distance.

Steamboat Springs is a well known skiers paradise, but is even more popular in the summer for its weekly rodeo, hot air ballooning, craft shows, music festivals, river rafting, fishing, biking as well as numerous restaurants and interesting gift shops.

About The Owner

We live on Guam, a small island in the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines. Gyongyi is an associate professor for the University of Maryland in Asia: Guam campus. She teaches Marine Biology and related sciences. Frank is administrator for a medical clinic. We have two daughters and three grands. We have spent every summer and a few Christmas's at our cabin since we built it in 1986.

This photo is us with our one grandchild: Cali.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 1986

Why The Owner chose Northwest

We purchased the 10 acres sight unseen with my mother. When we first visited the property and sat on the one small clearing where the original owner (a friend of my mother's) suggested a house would have the best view, we were totally unprepared for the beauty around us: it is the polar opposite of our home in Guam. We decided on the spot to build a log cabin, a large one to accommodate all 5 of us, and did so the following summer. Each year since then we improved the house by adding a huge sleeping loft for guests, hardwood floors and other features.

What makes this cabin unique

Although Guam may seem to most a small place, in comparison it is a busy, cosmopolitan island with traffic, many people (OK, only about 170,000 :o). Going to our cabin each summer was a breath of fresh air, not to mention NO WORK! :-) We never put in a satellite dish for TV on purpose to allow us to do other things with our time. Once we arrive in our mountain cabin, that is as far as we go: friends and family come to stay with us. It is a place to gather for our far flung family from all over the states, other parts of Asia and Europe. It is our place of refuge, and party place, all in one.

Fall Getaway Seclusion

  • 5 of 5

Once again our trip to the Mountain High cabin in September 2014 was fantastic. Our party of 6 enjoyed the fresh fall mountain air and the cabin was in nice working order with some things corrected from the year before by the owners. They are very responsive to any unforeseen issues discovered and have provided a great experience. Hahn's Peak was 'alpen-glowing' again as usual and the seclusion was needed. Thanks to the owners for allowing us the stay in their cabin and we are already preparing for another visit this year.

Wonderful and more!!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was everything the owner said it would be and more!! The cabin had a complete kitchen with all the accessories. The bedrooms and baths were clean, plush and very comfortable. We enjoyed cooking on the grill and having a cold beer on the deck from which we were able to see the entire world!! or so it seemed. I actually slept on the couch so I could see the incredible night sky. We definitely plan to return.

Hahn's Peak Seclusion

  • 5 of 5

Our trip to Mountain High last September was fantastic. We had a party of 6 and each had their own bed. The cabin had all the necessities inside and we cooked all meals there(great to have that washer and dryer too) and of course the views of Hahn's Peak and surrounding skyline at sunset during alpenglow was amazing. Great hiking and picture taking all around. Wildlife was everywhere. In the afternoons we relaxed on the porch during some rain storms. In the evenings the stargazing was extreme...forgot how many stars are really out there since moving to the 'city'. Everything for us worked out very well. The Forest Service Roads are generally pretty good save the last couple hundred yards to the cabin, yet is what the owner states as needing a vehicle with some clearance; we were good with our weighted down Jeep Liberty. We enjoyed the quietness of the cabin and woods yet also visited the Hahn's Peak Roadhouse for great food and NFL football viewing. The area is great for outdoors with lakes, national forest and trails. We thank the owner for allowing us the stay in their cabin and will look forward to another visit.

Mountain High Review

  • 3 of 5

The house itself was great but a few people in our group were disappointed with a few aspects of our stay. After we had paid our final deposit we were asked to not use the fire pit, even though there was no fire ban in Rout County which I verified with the county. The last portion of the road up to the cabin is definitely "very rough", even in a four wheel drive vehicle it was a rough ride. Many folks use the surrounding roads for ORV driving and during this busy weekend, there was quite a few. On an normal weekend, I am guessing there is much less use than we saw over Labor day weekend. And lastly, there were multiple mice present in the home during our stay, The owner should plug holes to the outside with expansion foam and trap remaining mice from inside of the house (this was the main issue for our group). The view of Hahns Peak and the night time stars is nothing less than stunning.

Owner's Response: There is not much I can say, only that I am sorry that the stay was not quite what was expected. The road is not a good one and that is clearly stated. Perhaps I need to state in the description that the firepit is off bounds, I don't ever want anyone to be disappointed once they have paid their deposit. While there is not a complete fire ban, fires are only allowed in camp grounds or approved fire pits, and with the danger of fire as high as it has been, I stand by my decision. Mice....what can I say! We have traps but they are smarter than our traps. We plug holes when we find them but this is a rugged log cabin and will never be mouse proof. I spent two weeks there in June and never saw one, but I know they are there. I chalk it up to life in the woods. I do hope you enjoyed your stay in spite of them!

Perfect Mountain Get Away

  • 5 of 5

Mountain High was the perfect cabin for our family to get away from it all. Remote, surrounded by wildlife, with all the comforts of home. We arrived in a minivan on a rainy day, and were nervous about getting up the rutted dirt road, but we got up without any problems. Our kids (ages 4 and 6) loved the loft for playing and sleeping, we loved the view and the hikes right from the cabin. We didn't see another soul during our stay, except for when we went down to the lake or back to Steamboat Springs for a ride on the Alpine Slide.

Anyone who enjoys cooking will love the kitchen. It was better equipped than my own, with quality, sharp knives, a blender, italian coffee makers, crock pot, and all sorts of pans and cookware. So don't hesitate to bring ingredients for real meals.

We were there for 4 nights, and only went into town once. Steamboat Springs is about 50 minutes away and has shops and adventure for kids. Just down the mountain is Steamboat Lake, with a small swimming beach. There is also hiking galore from the cabin and in the national parks surrounding the area.

I definitely recommend Mountain High for anyone who wants to get away from noise and crowds. There is even a tent and sleeping bags if you want to hike up to sleep under the stars one night.
