Casa Kauai is located on an extremely private bluff property with spectacular views of the ocean, framed between classic tropical foliage. Address is 3560 Kaweonui Rd., Princeville, HI 96722. Only a beautiful greenbelt separates the house from the ocean. Unobstructed head-on views of the ocean. Whale watching and sunsets are glorious.

Large and well built, this (Robert Easton designed) tri-level home has five bedrooms and four bathrooms, an office (with amazing ocean view) plus a studio apartment with an additional bedroom and bathroom. The house has exterior redwood siding and stained (weathered) cedar interior finishes. Enjoy the luxurious lifestyle of daily saunas and dips in the hot tub, while surrounded by a beautifully landscaped garden. There are two decks and a lanai. Watch spectacular sunsets over the ocean from your living room or decks. Mornings are gorgeous here, but the summer sunsets are truly awesome.

This house is about three minutes away from the beautiful St. Regis (formerly the Princeville Hotel), where fine dining and beach access are available to the public. Situated in the lush north shore of Kauai, the house is an easy drive to many gorgeous north shore beaches, great for kids, romantic swimming and picnics, and a range of water sports including snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, shelling, etc.

Tennis courts and golf are about two minutes away. The Princeville Spa is about five minutes away.

Stores and food shopping are no more than five minutes away.

The house is owned and used as a retreat by the non-profit Los Angeles-based Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law. Proceeds from rentals help with the human rights work of the organization.

Wheelchair Accessibility:

The main floor, which includes a bedroom, two bathrooms, kitchen, living room, and dining room is accessible using portable ramps that are maintained at the house. The house has a driveway that is accessible for a van. One ramp is used to drop down two steps to get from the grade (parking) level to the house's main floor level. A second indoor ramp is used to move from the dining area into the living room area.

Why Peter Schey chose North Shore

This is a beautiful cedar wood house with large floor to ceiling windows in the living room and amazing views of the ocean. House is on a very quiet cup-de-sac so very little (almost no) traffic. Room for 3-4 cars. Lovely garden. Jacuzzi on deck overlooking ocean. Great location ... 3-4 minutes to Woodland in Princeville, couple minutes to golf course and tennis courts, and centrally located on the North Shore so you can drive to beaches close by going either east or west along the north shore.

Run down home. Really a shame.

  • 1 of 5

The home is a beautiful layout.

I do not believe the description was accurate of this house. So run down.

Not key when we got to house. Had to wait a long time for someone to show up to let us in. (and it was raining).

But I have never stayed in a place that was so run down.

The house was not that clean. Table, counters, windows. One of our party cut her foot on a piece of glass in the kitchen when we first arrived. Windows were dirty and sticky on the inside. Table and counters were dirty and sticky.

One roll of toilet paper per bathroom for a weeks stay for 12 people??

No hand towels or dishrags in kitchen. Dishes and silverware must have been donated or bought over time as almost nothing matched.

The dryer was broken and that put a kink in things for us big time.

Many broken blinds through out the house.

Issues with the downstairs tv. Turns off on its own. No instructions on the use of the various electronics there.

There were so many lights that did not work it was crazy. Light switches with tape over them so you did not use them.

The grounds were not kept up at all. When we got there the driveway and walkways were covered with tree branches and palm fronds and sand. Exposed conduits that must have had wiring for lights at one time, broken all over the yard, wires laying around. BBQ grill cover just laying in yard, hose just dumped beside house. Railings rotten, deck boards rotten, trim on the house is rotted away, very bad bee problem up in the eaves. Gutters have trees growing in them.

And the list goes on.

Really a shame because it will take 10's of thousands of dollars to fix it.

Wonderful for the price

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here back in July 2014. It has 5 bedrooms including an office with a blow up mattress. ALSO, a studio apartment on the lowest level. So really 7 bedrooms! The description really doesn't do it justice. It's a great rate for what you get. Two of the bedrooms also have a little loft space that kids could sleep in. We had 9 people staying at the house and we could have easily fit 9 more. It's HUGE! Also for a property in Princeville the amount of yard you get is impressive. We had our wedding on Tunnels beach and came back and had dinner in the yard under some mangrove trees. You can see photos here, scroll down for yard photos. It was perfect. http://www.grosgrainfab.com/search?q=kauai+wedding

Also, here are some photos of the inside of the house:

http://www.grosgrainfab.com/2006/10/kauai-house.html

The house also came with a triple kayak and foam blocks to mount to your car roof and two bicycles so you didn't have to rent any! They don't even mention that in the description! Although the bike tube did bust and we had to replace it ourselves. Walmart is about a 45 minute drive away.

Like I said the pictures don't really do the property justice. There's a huge two story window in the living room which overlooks the ocean. Rainbows every morning. Hideaway Beach is about a 10 minute hike but it's kind of hard to find the path without asking around. Queen's Bath is only a 10 minute bike ride.

Other amenities include a sauna, a hot tub with absolutely gorgeous views, a deck, two patios. A garage stocked with snorkels, flippers and other beach stuff, chairs, etc.

I will say that the decor is a little dated and there are things that need repaired. Like the steps off the deck were falling apart, some of the vertical blinds were missing, etc. Maybe they've been fixed since 2014 but it seemed like the owners weren''t very hands on. The studio apartment had a really uncomfortable futon for a bed. Such a shame because a plain full sized bed would make so much more sense and would be pretty cheap to furnish. Also, there's only air conditioning in the master bedroom, a second bedroom and the office. Now, we went in July so it was pretty hot but the air conditioner was definitely needed even with the ocean breezes. I felt bad for the other guests who had to sleep without one. It was just too hot. Any other season I think it would be fine. All that being said, for the price, it's worth it. BY FAR! Especially if you are trying to save money by going as a group.

A beautiful setting, comfortably furnished

  • 4 of 5

Architecturally well designed for a group of 10-12, although the kitchen could use bigger frying pans and a larger microwave for big group cooking. Needs reading lamps everywhere. Hot tub needs considerable work. Social space is wonderful. Convenient location. We'd come back in a heartbeat. With upgraded maintenance, it would be 5 star.

perfect home for our stay

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 10 friends preparing to kayak the Na Pali Coast. The house was perfect for us. Notwithstanding we were a big party, it swallowed us up with room to spare. Its configuration worked well for such a large group. There were several eating and relaxing areas and the kitchen was large and had all the equipment we needed (other than a kettle). We found the house was well maintained and clean with everything we needed. We loved sitting on the outside patio having drinks and watching the sunset. Just glorious. Being a lawyer, I am very particular and had quite a few questions for the owner. I found the owner extremely responsive and accommodating and a real pleasure to deal with. I have no hesitation in recommending the property. My only caution is that you really need a car but as we had several this was no problem for us.

Spectacular Views

  • 4 of 5

8 family members stayed for 1 week, were very comfortable and enjoyed this house. It was difficult to leave the house each morning due to the incredible views of the ocean and humpback whales spouting off shore. All services were within a mile or 2 and most activities like the beach , hiking , surfing , paddle boarding , golf were close by.

I would give this house 5 stars but it needs a cosmetic make over. That said , all the infrastructure was in good working order and we loved the unique design. The biggest issue we had was with the coffee machine which we struggled with each morning. If we ever return to Kauai , and we hope we do , we will rent this house again. Cheers

The hot tub on the lower outside deck was well utilized by us, as was the sauna, 2 unexpected pleasures. The ample space, multiple bathrooms, and 2 decks overlooking the frolicking whales make this house ideal for a large group. We loved it!
