A tranquil stay in beautiful Tuscany
Our family of 4 spent a week in mid-August relaxing in the Fienile in lovely Il Poggiolo, situated in the heart of Tuscany and surrounded by beautiful vistas and vineyards. Being weary New Yorkers, we wanted a quiet and peaceful sanctuary that was also conveniently located. The Montevarchi train station, which is a short 35 minute-ride to Florence, is 10 mins away by car. We also explored nearby towns such as Siena, Chianti, and Arezzo, which are all within an hour's drive. But part of the pleasure of staying at Il Poggiolo is that you don't always have to be out doing something. We also enjoyed staying put and simply soaking up our surroundings. There are walking trails from the house that take you along nearby vineyards. The house itself is spacious, clean and very well-equipped and if you need groceries, there's a large COOP supermarket in Montevarchi that has practically everything. We happened to be there during a heat wave but even without air conditioning, the house gets a cool breeze especially at night. The hosts, who live next door, are warm and friendly but never obtrusive. We left Il Poggiolo wishing we could have stayed longer...
Il Poggiolo is a jewell of a property.
The house has a superb layout, the amenities were excellent, perfectly clean and functional. The setting of the property is absolutely dreamy - with endless views over the surrounding valleys, sprinkled with vineyards, cyprus trees and rolling hills - accompanied by the musical sound of chirping birds and the sounds of silence ! The sunsets and evenings - a glass of cold Chianti at hand - were all that demanding Tuscan lovers could ever ask for and more. Sara and Allen - our neighbours who take care of the property - were as gracious and warm as you could ever ask for not to say their exquisitely cultured background which so enriched our stay. And that quaint nearby restaurant, that they recommended, served the best pizzas we have ever, ever eaten ! My wife and I cannot but give our very highest praise and rating of Il Poggiolo and of our hosts. We have travelled the world quite extensively and in our holidays - as we do work hard - we are quite demanding.
Dear both of you,
Thank you so much for your kind words !
We loved having you as our guests, and will always remember our long August evenings drinking local wine, watching the sunset, and talking long past dusk.
You stay was a delight. Thank you for loving Poggiolo as much as we do.
(And thank you also for the wonderfully simple and delicious Gazpacho recipe !!)
Sara & Allen
We stayed in Il Poggiolo in July of 2018 for one week. It was a perfect villa for the the party of six. The villa is very comfortable, equipped with everything you may possibly need (and then some), and the location is great for exploring Tuscany. And you cannot beat the view!!
A few times we parked our car at a free parking at Montevarchi station (10 mins drive) and took a train to Florence, the rest of the time we explored nearby towns (Sienna, Arezzo). We shopped for groceries at the COOP as Sara recommended, and cooked dinner at the villa almost every night.
Sara is a perfect host - always there when you need help or advise. Special thank you for the welcome basket!!! We were exhausted after a long journey from California, and the basket had everything we needed to make a a quick dinner and relax outside!
Thank you for the wonderful stay!
I am so glad you enjoyed your time at il Poggiolo Tuscany, and that the Fienile proved perfect for your party. It was my pleasure to provide the essentials for a simple meal - you had just arrived after a long trans-Atlantic trip, with octogenarians in your party, and serious jet-lag! May all your trips prove as easy:-) Warm regards, Sara
Perfect location for exploring Tuscany
Il Poggiolo is a perfectly and carefully restored old building, now equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Everything is clean , the kitchen equipment absolutely complete and in perfect conditions. Nice places to sit outside, beautiful surroundings. Firenze (by train), Arezzo, Siena and the other highlights of Tuscany can easily be reached. The communication with the owners before and during our stay was intense and always helpful. Kyra, the owner´s daughter was always available, friendly, communicative and extremely helpful with her suggestions and finding solutions for some minor problems. We will gratefully remember this wonderful stay at Il Poggiolo. Thank you very much to the whole Grieco family!
Il Poggiolo was the perfect location for our stay in Tuscany! We stayed with another couple in the Fienile home and found it comfortable and equipped with everything we could possibly need. The setting and location are fabulous and we enjoyed time relaxing in the various seating areas outside. From start to finish, Sara and Allen communicated all the details we needed to enjoy our stay. We found ourselves asking many times, “What did Sara say about (fill in the blank)” and her green information book always had the answer! We appreciated the attention to detail! We would highly recommend this location to anyone considering a stay in Tuscany.
Dear all of you,
Thank you for appreciating the house, the gardens, the comforts and the surroundings .... AND the green "Welcome Binder," which tries to cover most of the predictable questions. It is very gratifying to hear it came in useful - all those years of preparing handouts for classes have come in handy !! :-)
You were perfect guests, and I hope every vacation you have will be as successful as this one.
A scenic country retreat conveniently located in the center of Tuscany, in the midst of vineyards and olive groves, provides easy access to numerous sites of interest, from Medieval & Renaissance towns (Florence, Siena, Arezzo) to picturesque Castles, Monasteries and Hamlets. There are numerous markets with local produce & fine wines, handbags and clothing. Many privately managed & municipal pools in area. Thermal Spas 30-45 min. drive. Easy country walks at your doorstep, serious trekking trails in nearby hills. Designer outlets in the area (VAT tax rebates for non EU citizens). Cooking classes, painting lessons, bike rental and winery tours are some of the favorite activities after cultural tourism. There is something to do for visitors of all ages and interests. In the morning and evening you will see the roebuck deer in the fields around the house :-)

About Il Poggiolo in Tuscany
In 1994 Allen and I bought the property we had been renting for over 10 years. We are both Renaissance historians, and have worked for American research/university centers in Florence, commuting to Florence. The reasons why we ended up in Tuscany - on a hilltop in the Valdarno - are totally serendipitous, and entirely too long to go into here. But we did it, and lived in happy nonchalance, raising our daughter and commuting to work in Florence until the economic crunch began to make itself felt. In 2005 we had the belated realization that this property had better help maintain itself, otherwise we would find it very difficult to keep up the land and buildings after we retired. I keep buying lottery tickets with blind faith, but in the meantime we bit the bullet, hocked our souls to the bank in Montevarchi, and decided to carry out a dream: to restore and convert the villa’s barn into a rental cottage. The idea was that holiday rentals would help with the mortgage, garden maintenance, and miscellaneous upkeep until – when we are well into our dotage – we downsize and move into the converted barn ourselves!

Why Il Poggiolo in Tuscany chose Bucine
Tuscany is not only a tourist mecca, but the climate is better than Paris and London (where we had been living before), and Florence is within an easy commute, so it is possible to live in the countryside and work in the city. The people in the area are wonderful. In fact, the Tuscans are the main reason why my husband and I opted to stay in Italy, to buy the family villa, and make a life here. The 'Fienile' was originally one of the agricultural outbuildings (a barn) in which we used to park the tractor and the car, store tools, and hang laundry. It has become a charming dwelling, where we plan to retire one day. In the meantime, we have had marvelous guests.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Why is il PoggioloTuscany so special? 1. PERFECT LOCATION: Il Poggiolo is within easy reach of the major Tuscan sites of interest, so it is ideal for day trips. At the same time you have the calm of the countryside and vibrant sunsets over the Chianti hills. For both gastronomy and shopping, the Valdarno offers excellent wineries and restaurants as well as a number of designer outlets (the Prada outlet 'SPACE' is a 5 minute drive from Il Poggiolo). 2. LUXURY OF SPACE : The Fienile has the advantage of spacious quarters and far many more rooms than are usual with vacation rentals. This can make all the difference when travelling with a group of friends or family, and the two gardens also offer the possibility of sunning in lounge chairs, reading in the shade of the Sofora tree, or dining al fresco. 3. A REAL HOME: The Fienile is a real home, with all the conveniences and more beside. There is free parking on site (but you do not need to look at your car - only the view!), the gardens are comfortably furnished, inside there is a a large flatscreen SAT-TV, DVD player, and fast WI-FI, In the kitchen you will find the necessary equipment to make a cake or pie, or roast that free-range chicken you picked up in the market. Bedrooms have extra pillows, and cozy blankets and quilts for cool nights. If anything is missing, please let us know !! 4. EXPERIENCE of LOCAL HOSTS: You have someone next-door who can give advice about restaurants and places to see that are off the usual tourist itinerary. You will not see your hosts unless you need them, but having someone on hand to help with the details of a stay or an emergency can be a blessing.
