Judbury sits in the heart of the Huon Valley, an area celebrated for its natural beauty, local produce and relaxed pace of life. The charming township of Ranelagh is known for its relaxed atmosphere and local food scene. The town is home to several well-loved cafés and eateries where you can enjoy quality coffee, fresh baked goods and meals made with local produce – the Summer Kitchen is an absolute must, with freshly baked goods and a lovely outdoor seating area. Make sure you try one of their famous Wallaby pies!
A short drive will take you to Huonville, where you’ll find cafés, bakeries, supermarkets and the famous Huon Jet boats. The town is also a great starting point for exploring nearby orchards, cider houses and roadside stalls offering fresh apples, berries and seasonal produce straight from the source. The Lost Captain is a great pit stop for lunch or a relaxing drink by the river.
Nature lovers will feel right at home with plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling and exploring the surrounding bushland. Huon River is ideal for kayaking, fishing or simply enjoying a quiet picnic by the water. Scenic country roads wind through forests and farmland, making the area perfect for leisurely drives, photography and wildlife spotting, with wallabies and birdlife commonly seen.
For those interested in food and wine, the Huon Valley offers a growing selection of cellar doors, distilleries and farm-gate experiences. I would recommend Home Hill winery for a relaxing long lunch. Also nearby is Willie Smiths Apple Shed, a rustic restaurant inviting you to discover the freshest flavours the Huon Valley has to offer. A slice of hot apple pie and Willie Smiths cider or apple tea is essential.
Weekend markets and small community events often pop up in nearby towns, offering a chance to connect with locals and discover handmade goods – they often occur on a Sunday morning. Check out the twilight food market at Geeveston on the first Thursday of every month.
