About Rachel- please email first

I was raised in Europe and have been fortunate to travel extensively .I can truly say that Sedona is one of the most beautiful and stunning places in the world. It was a fantastic

part of the world to experience my childhood years.

Rachel- please email first purchased this house in 2005

Why Rachel- please email first chose Sedona

My family chose this vacation home because of it's stunning location, close proximity to town and of course it's breathtaking views. We love the stunning natural surroundings, peaceful neighborhood and it's situation in a low light zone- which provides night time skies and star visibility an amazing experience.

What makes this house unique

Everything is unique about our vacation home.Amongst my favorites are the relaxing evenings with friends soaking in Hotspa under the stars, walking down to the canyon and sunbathing on the rocks, dining with my family on our deck enjoying the spectacular views, sitting around the fireplace in the winter and watching movies and spending time in uptown Sedona where there are fabulous restaurants and events.

Guestbook comments from the manager

My cousin went to stay in this home in sedona .Everytime we talked she insisted i come to visit her where she was staying... close to the red rock state park. I have always wanted to visit sedona- it has always been one of those places i almost got to- but never quite arrived. So, i saw this as a special opportunity to fulfill one of my long term desires .

My cousin is an artist and she was in her element here. The scenes of red rocks and particulary cathedral rock- are indescribable from the back deck. Its the kind of spot you sit down in- and dont want to move. Truly mesmorising.Although this home is perfect for an artist- it is also a great home to relax and re juvenate in. We used the hot spa every night- just sitting under the stars and soaking- you can feel the built up stress and strains of life dissolving.I felt like a million dollars after my visit. I love sedona - if you love natural beauty, shopping [ unique boutiques and cafes], hiking, adventures- this area is paradise. i am now planning a family reunion here in sedona- hopefully at this house- thats how impressive it is. Thanks for a wonderful house to stay in! I wont forget it! Annie

Amazing vacation .Stunning views .Fabulous host

  • 5 of 5

If we could give more than 5 stars we would. We had an amazing time in sedona and are so pleased we chose this house. The views are absolutely stunning from everywhere - inside and out. Loved the neighbourhood - close to town but you feel as if you are away from it all.

Super comfortable beds and special touches throughout the home made our stay even more enjoyable than anticipated. Very helpful and pleasant host who went out of her way to recommend activities for our children and they were all spot in. Highly recommended

This house is fantastic!

Having just bought a house earlier this year and seeing so many nice looking pictures online and the houses that didn't live up to them, we arrived with tempered expectations. The 'House of the Smiling Sun' surpassed what we expected by a wide margin. Every room is bigger than it appears to be in the online photos, especially the kitchen and master. The master shower had to be 4' x 4', maybe bigger. The dining table in the photo shows 5 chairs around it. We pulled three more chairs in from the desk and living area to seat 8 and could have easily fit 2 more. We are big people, too. All 4 of the guys are over 6' 2" and the ladies near 6' (we only had 6 people staying, but a friend joined us from Phoenix for a day).

We cooked our dinners in and there were enough dishes to have one set in the washer while using another. We found all the utensils we needed, as well as cookware. We used the oven, gas range top and the gas grill on the patio. All worked well. The back right burner did not light on it's own, but worked fine with an extended lighter.

The house is nestled in the valley that leads to Cathedral Rock and the view from the patio and hot tub is just amazing. You can walk to Oak Creek or take a 5-10 minute drive to a park to see the view from the creek. It's tough to put into words and no picture can capture it all.

The routine during our stay was to do a shorter hike in the morning and hit down town Sedona for lunch. We would then head back to the house for a short rest and to clean up, and then back out for a longer hike. The house is west of Sedona's shopping and restaurants, about a 10 minute drive. The drive to Cathedral Rock trails was about 20-25 minutes. The trails are on the east side and the house faces the more scenic west side.

With 3 married, 30 something couples staying there, we never felt in each others way...even during the morning rush for coffee, showers and breakfast. Between the table, the large patio with ample seating, and the 65" TV showing the morning news in front of a massive couch, we had plenty of room to get comfy and stay out of each others way while we woke up. The large entry way held all our hiking gear without having to step over it or move it.

I hate to sound like I'm related to the owner, but I honestly have no complaints and the house exceeded our expectations. When we come back to Sedona, we will book this house without hesitation. We paid full price and would again.

Perfect place for a very special ocassion

  • 5 of 5

Where to start. The place was incredible. Your own private oasis in the desert!! We loved everything about it and cant wait to return for the next special occasion. Our daughter married in sedona and we had been searching for hotel suites and then found this ideal 4 bedroom property in the panoramic region .

There is a 3 bedroom main house with an enormous living room [ cathedral ceilings , huge fireplace and spectacular views of red rocks] plus a guest studio with its own bathroom and mini kitchen- perfect for our daughter and son in law].

All this less than half the price of any comparable hotel accommodation. I would never stay any other place. Rachel and housekeeping went above and beyond to ensure our stay was beyond expectation. They were available but never intrusive. If you have a chance to stay here stop looking and book!!

Better than the pictures!

  • 5 of 5

The house is stunning and the location is incredible- it was the perfect trip! The renter was extremely nice and communication was easy throughout the booking & planning process. We arrived to find everything set up and exactly as described. It was an invigorating combination of aesthetic and comfort. Attention to detail was incredible: any questions were easily answered with on-site reference material. Everything you could possibly need was provided for cooking, cleaning, leisure, local recommendations, and even considerate things like some sundries you might've forgotten to pack, a sound bar to listen to your music & separate towels for the hot tub & bathrooms.

The views from the house & surrounding area are literally picture perfect! The location was remote enough to have unhindered views & a sense of natural beauty but convenient enough that the grocery store in town was maybe 10mins away... but how could you keep track of time driving through Red Rocks park? The cell reception at the house was great for Verizon but the rest of us had to plan ahead for things like using the GPS on our phones- which wasn't an imposition since a house phone was available in case of emergencies and of course they had maps for you to look at!

One downside was we didn't have enough time for all of the activities, most of which are readily available & accessible from the house. The hiking, fire pit, hot tub & nearby vineyards (to name a few) offered something for everyone... It's a very special place.

Fantastic Location, Terrible Experience

  • 1 of 5

Arriving at the "House of the Smiling Sun" at the requested time and expecting to be greeted by the host as instructed, we were surprised to find no one there. We found instead instructions on how to enter the house, only to be surprised to discover it was a mess -- over 90 degrees, kitchen full of dirty dishes, beds unmade, smelling like it had been in this state for some time. We cleaned the house and settled in. After finally reaching the manager by phone in the evening, she claimed to be surprised the house had not been cleaned after the previous occupants left (an obligatory cleaning fee was included). The place was not as large as we had anticipated from the web page ("sleeps 12"), and with eight adults and two infants, it was uncomfortably crowded. The manager offered to rent us a second unit in the same house at full price. We declined.

I wrote to her with a carefully worded e-mail note indicating unhappiness with her offer and pointing out the inconvenience it had created for us. Carefully truthful but straightforward about our disappointment, I mentioned that it would be difficult to write a good Yelp review. She responded to my note (who wrote all those 5-star reviews anyway?) by asking us to leave -- within 20 hours of arrival -- claiming that a member of the cleaning crew "was seriously injured in a car crash today." Indicating she lives two hours away (original directions: meet her at the house), she nevertheless claimed she would have been happy to come clean the house for us. Despite the empty second unit she had offered to rent us, she reasoned that "i will now need to stay in the studio myself so that i can visit with this family as opposed to the cost of staying at a hotel."

Wishing no further dealings with her, we moved out. That night the ten of us had a very pleasant stay at a nice local motel (different review) for less than the cost of one night at the Smiling Sun. After a good bit of haggling and payment promised, with checks supposedly mailed but never arriving, we finally received (in two parts a month later) a refund for the second night.

While the house has a spectacular view, and would be adequate for six paired adults, I would only consider renting it again -- for a smaller group -- if there was a change in management.

Like another recent 1-star review, we were initially accused of having broken a vase, but after asking for a photo and mentioning that we had photographed most of the house, we were told "not important."

My wife and I needed a nice getaway to relax and enjoy some family time and that's exactly what we got.
