• wi-fi and a very fast Fibre- op internet connection

• The second-floor bedroom area offers 2 Queen beds

This architect-designed cottage is built on a bluff over the ocean and was designed to recall the best aspects of Maritime tradition, but to modernize them with an open-concept interior. It has a summer-y feeling, with a high ceiling, boarded walls and fresh white paint.

Sunsets will knock your socks off. This design is best suited for couples, or couples with one or two children. All on a gorgeous property with 3 large ponds and 2 spring-fed brooks. You'll have a tough time leaving the cottage!

Fishermen haul their lobster traps each year out in front of our cottage. Moose, eagles, deer and foxes are regulars. It's easy to meet people here, and the daily pace here is slower than in most cities. Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, and at the shore there are lovely ocean breezes.

Can’t speak more highly of our stay at SeaSky Cottage. Not only was our host Stewart fantastic - making sure to come over after we arrived to make sure we were all settled in, as well as give us detailed recommendations for our stay. All of which I can say ended up being highlights of our trip. If you are looking to spend time in Cape Breton, and especially if you are considering a trip to play at the famed Cabot Cliffs you have to consider SeaSky Cottage! We will 100% be returning.

Three of us spent 7 nights, mid-July at this fabulous ocean-front property. Everything about this cottage was as advertised. Great location, looking out at the Gulf of Saint Lawrence with perfect sunsets & easy beach access nearby. Hosts Stewart & Bell were amazing our first night with their personalized overview of Cape Breton Island & all it has to offer in the way of dining, pubs, not-to-miss places to visit, coastline drives, hiking options, etc. When planning a visit to Cape Breton Island, definitely consider staying at this or one of the several adjacent properties managed & owned by the same Host. 5 Stars all the way!!!

We enjoyed our stay at Seasky cottage very much. Our host, Stewart, greeted us shortly after arrival. He welcomed us and shared information regarding sights to see, eateries we might enjoy as well as nearby activities. The cottage was just as we had anticipated from the pictures. It was cozy and had everything we needed. The kitchen was well stocked with equipment and utensils. The cottage was very clean and decorated with some lovely art pieces, a collection of books and games and comfortable furniture. The outside views and sunsets were stunning. It is a very peaceful setting, great for getting away and relaxing.

Unbelievable location/view! Perfect for the secluded retreat we were after for exploring the area. Stewart was so kind to give us a “locals perspective” on the must see spots during our limited time. Bald Eagles/seals/whales all from our deck! Cannot recommend this place enough!!!

Rest in Margaree

This is a place to sit in peace on the edge of cliff overlooking some of the best scenery on the island. If you're looking for a stay on the edge of the world, this is a great candidate.

"Edge of the world" is pretty appropriate Kyler! Cape Breton has most of the conveniences of today (Fibre-op, cell service) while still seeming to exist apart, in ways that are refreshing and satisfying. Because we are an island, things developed here in ways different that other destinations, and hence, offers the kind of experience you can't always find on vacation. Thanks for visiting!

Amazing week

We had a fantastic time at Sea Sky. The location of the cottage was just as we wanted. It felt secluded but was still within an easy drive of stores/restaurants/park. The views are stunning, and we sat on the deck daily to enjoy them. The rest of the cottage was just as advertised, clean, and cozy. For stargazers, the night sky is very dark, and I was able to take some great photos of the Milky Way stretching over the cottage.

Bliss Beside a Cape Breton Sea.

A cozy architectural wonder of charming g decoration facing that vast expanse of ocean called the Gulf of St. Lawerence, where bald headed eagles made eye contact flying past the kitchen in the morning and sunsets worthy of Van Gogh’s brush ended every day. This property and its owners are class personified.

Cape Breton SeaSky Cottage

Beautiful spot! We had never been to NS or CP so it was fun to explore the area (arrived via car ferry through Yarmouth, NS - drove home via Saint John, NB). Many things to do close to the cottage. Great hikes in nearby provincial and the national parks. However, the best part was just relaxing on the deck and watching the ocean. Cabin faces west and the sunsets were amazing. Also very dark skies with incredible stargazing. We mostly cooked at home (well stocked, modern kitchen), but had excellent meals at L'abri, Cafe Les Suêtes, and the Dancing Goat.

I find this guest’s review somewhat bizarre, and I can’t quite figure why she is posting something like this. We have been hosting this cottage for 16 years, and have NEVER had a single complaint about the how clean the kitchen or the cottage is (inside or outside). Our average score after 16 years and 87 reviews (of week-long stays) is 10 out of 10. This seems to be the first person who noticed anything amiss- and not just minor, but apparently major problems. However, I believe they are fabricated and that this review may have been inspired by a personal grudge rather than any genuine issue. Our cleaning person (who has also been doing this for 16 years) is top-notch, knows her work well, and is both fastidious and conscientious about the way she approaches things. Can’t say enough good things about her. I would be very surprised for a guest to find a fingerprint on the fridge or dishes, let alone left in the state this guest mentions. The insides and outside of the fridge/freezer, dishes and counters are ALWAYS cleaned properly and completely, as is the rest of the cottage. A sampling of some of other guests’ comments/reviews regarding the cleanliness evident at SeaSky cottage: “The cottage was very clean, comfortable and welcoming, and provided lots of restful peace and quiet.” “The cottage is pretty much as advertised - cute, clean, well-stocked, great front deck.” “The cottage was amazing, beyond our expectations.” “The cottage was clean, cozy, peaceful and the views simply unmatched.” “We enjoyed cooking several meals in the well-appointed kitchen area.” “...lovely art/decor and all the tools in the kitchen for at home meals if one wishes. Stewart and his wife have created a little paradise, with keen attention to detail.” “The cottage is fantastic. Comfortable beds, great style and the kitchen has everything you need if your are making meals at home. “ …………...... Additionally, I check our cottages after our cleaner has finished to make sure things are in place before guests arrive. I don’t often rent to bikers (this one’s email handle is “hawgwild”) because we have a long gravel driveway, but I went out of my way to accommodate the fact that they said they would have bikes with them. When they arrived earlier than agreed, I met them soon after, and spent over an hour with them, as she mentions, outlining all of the wonderful options they have here. Days later, I sent a note to them pointing out the Northern Lights that were to be visible for a few nights. I have a metal, bear-proof dumpster and at our first meeting, I direct guests to take their garbage out a couple of times per week to our wood garbage box, and to let me know when they do so, I can transfer it that day to the secure dumpster before dark so the interim wood box doesn’t get raided by bears. (This is a convenience so guests don’t have to deal with the dumpster itself). Instead, these guests put out little bits of garbage daily, even though they knew it involved me having to transfer it to the dumpster daily. When I politely asked them if they could possibly do it less frequently, as per my request at the first meeting, they did not seem to like this, perhaps seeming an “infringement” on their freedom. His response was not pleasant. I can only surmise that this couple formed some kind of grudge, and exercised it in this review. I can only say we have never had any complaints remotely like this (as can be verified by scanning other reviews), and that this review is actually motivated by something other than the reality in which they found themselves!!

Wonderful experience. Breathtakingly beautiful. Just what the doctor ordered. For landlubbers like us it was a dream come true - seaside cottage on a cliff overlooking Chimney Corner beach and the deep blue sea. Great hiking all around. Breathtaking Beauty and Friendly Host

We stayed in SeaSky cottage for the past week and it was a wonderful experience. The cottage felt modern and rustic at the same time, with lovely art/decor and all the tools in the kitchen for at home meals if one wishes. Stewart and his wife have created a little paradise, with keen attention to detail, a generosity in welcoming and offering lots of ideas for itineraries all over Cape Breton. We heard over 20 different species of birds one morning (thanks Merlin) and a couple of mornings saw fin whales right in front of the cottage. And the view! The sunsets! We hope to come back sometime! Loved it!

Incredible!

SeaSky cottage is phenomenal! It was the perfect jumping off spot for hiking in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and for sightseeing on the Cabot Trail outside the park. Although hiking was the reason for our Cape Breton adventure, we could easily have stayed at the cottage all day - reading on the deck, watching the lobster boats, birdwatching, and taking a short walk to the nearby beach. Stewart is a fantastic host. He provided loads of suggestions for adventures, food, and entertainment. It is clear that he loves Cape Breton and wants to share his enthusiasm with all. We could not have asked for a better first time visit to Cape Breton and will definitely return to SeaSky cottage!

Fabulous Cape Breton Location

The property is ideally located for exploring all of Cape Breton. Our week-long stay was filled with hikes and drives around the Cabot Trail, visits to local fishing villages, and trips out to Sydney, Glace Bay (highly recommend the mining museum tour), Louisbourg, the Bras d'Or lake region (especially Baddeck and a boat tour out to the bird islands), Inverness, and Mabou (try a bike ride on the trails there), and much more! The highlight was the in-depth information and recommendations about trails, restaurants, and more made by Stewart on the day we arrived - it led us off the beaten track to some wonderful trails and great food, with the added benefit of meeting some amazing locals. In fact, we brought home the much used map of the region that he kindly gave us with all his recommendations as a souvenir of the trip. This was an incredibly relaxing, adventurous, and rejuvenating vacation for us and we highly recommend the property and location.

Truly Amazing Vacation Cottage

I cannot begin to describe how truly amazing our vacation was on Cape Breton Island. First, our hosts Stewart and Bell were so gracious and accommodating. Stewart spent over an hour with us going over the many exciting things to do in the area and made dining recommendations that were spot on. It was a very peaceful and relaxing escape for us. There were so many enjoyable aspects of our time here. We would have to include the views from the deck of the cottage as one of the truly memorable parts of the trip. Each night the sunsets were amazing. We very much appreciated the tranquility of the location. The hiking, the beaches and friendly local residents all added to the enjoyment of the trip. This is a rare find and I would happily return any time. I highly recommend this property.

The pictures on the websi...

The pictures on the website don't lie, except that it's even better to be there in person! Stewart and Bell are great (helpful if you need it, not intrusive if you just want to veg). Don't miss Bell's Baddeck shop - one, if not THE nicest on the island - or breakfast/lunch at the Dancing Goat Cafe. Plenty of things to do within easy driving distance (mostly nature related), but you may not want to leave the cottage. Nirvana for those who want to get away from it all. My only caution is that given the cottage's proximity to a cliff, I'd think twice before booking if traveling with small children. HIGHLY recommended (just please leave a week or two open for me each year)!
Response from VrboOwner on 21 Mar, 2020
This guest, whom we enjoyed having, is right to express concern about the cliff, but only for those parents who think their children will not listen to their instructions. The cliff is about 200 feet from the cottage. Most guests stay in the cottage or on the deck when they are not touring. There is also plenty to see on our property which is not near the cliff. We have had a number of guests stay here with children of ages ranging from infants to teens without any problems. (Obviously, infants are fine because they are not mobile.) Parents will be the best judges of whether their children will present problems in this situation. Stewart Applegath

Beautiful setting

We totally enjoyed our stay at Seascape. The sunsets were spectacular. Stewart is the ultimate host- he provided very thorough information when we booked the cottage. When we arrived, he gave us great ideas to explore the area. The cottage is decorated with different pieces of art, which was fun to explore. Shower and heated bathroom floor were a nice bonus. We had a wonderful afternoon at Red Shoe Pub, listening to fiddle and bagpipe music. Loved West Mabou Harbor beach and the boardwalk at Inverness Beach. We took a boat to Bird Island and saw seals, puffins, and eagles. On Wednesdays, Normaway Inn has music in the barn. Spent a nice evening with dinner and show (fiddle and piano). Also went on the cabot trail to white point and saw a play at Baddeck Theatre. Very relaxing and fun week. You will enjoy your time here!

Chimney Corner Cottage

Amazing week on Cape Breton! Seasky Cottage was the perfect place to stay to explore the area. Stewart gave us wonderful recommendations for hiking, eating and music. My only regret is that we didn’t have enough time to check them all off. The cottage was just as pictured, comfortable and tastefully decorated. We appreciated the cd’s, books and games for the evening hours after the sunsets were over. The views from the deck and living room were spectacular. Don’t miss the authentic entertainment in the Barn after a dinner at the Normaway Inn in Margaree. We loved the the hike at White Point to the Mariners Cemetery and beyond. If you Enjoy hiking, don’t miss the Skyline hike in the park. Be sure and pick up cooked lobster at the Seafood Stop in Cheticamp. We didn’t get a chance to go to the Red Shoe for supper and music, but we are already planning our next trip.

What a fantastic place -- with a great host in Stewart. First, the house. Stewart and his wife built this place as their cottage and, when they built a new home some years later started renting it out. It's perfect for a couple, a family with small kids, or a couple of friends. Beds are in a very nice loft upstairs, the ground floor is perfectly appointed with everything you need, and the deck is stunning.. Everything is in perfect condition. The setting is remarkable. In a field of wildflowers, over a cliff that looks west onto the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It's quiet and beautiful. The area is wonderful too. This isn't big touristy Cape Breton -- this is village Cape Breton. The out of province license plates you see probably belong to local families back to visit parents and cousins... The beaches are quiet, family, surprisingly warm for this part of the country (totally swimmable), and local. Chimney Corner is a few minutes away. Our other favourites were Whale Cove and Margaree Harbour Village just up the road. You're 30 mins north of Inverness, a beautiful town which serves as a hub for the region and has one of the world's best golf courses (Cabot Links), and a great restaurant (The Annex). You're 30 mins south of Cheticamp, equally beautiful and a centre of francophone Acadian culture in Cape Breton. The Margaree River is idyllic and a great salmon fishing river in season. Groceries are 20 mins away in Lemoyne or Margaree River Forks.Thank you Stewart!!

Thanks Robert- I didn't know there was a "touristy" Cape Breton! ;) Really though, that's one of the beauties of this Island, is that even in Summer, it is never congested, and the beaches are not that crowded. Glad you enjoyed yourself here!

Bell and I built the cottage in 1994 as a summer house when we hadn't yet settled permanently in Cape Breton. We are both artists, and when we decided to live here all year 'round, in 1997, we needed more room–we built another building to contain studio and production space and commuted between the buildings every day. Eventually, over the years, we migrated to the larger building permanently, and used the cottage for studio space and for guests. So, the cottage is a special place for us, and we laboured for years to make it right.

Why they chose this property

Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and the scenery on this stretch of coast is particularly striking; it can also be dramatic, with 130 kph winds at many points of the year. There is such a rich culture here, historically and musically, and life unwinds at its own special pace. We see some of the most dramatic sunsets anywhere, watch whales play in our front yard, and fishermen haul their lobster traps every year. There are the gorgeous rolling hills of Mabou, and the town of Inverness, which offers music, pubs and food; the acclaimed new Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf courses (rated #43 and #9 in the world by Golf Digest) by the sea, which are only 20 minutes away and offer a unique golfing experience in Inverness. Moose, eagles, deer and foxes are regulars. It's easy to meet people, and the daily rhythm here is slower than in most cities; we visit neighbours and friends whenever we can, as we are busy in the summer months. It's also nice to be in a place where you don't need air-conditioning; Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, and at the shore there are breezes to keep any bugs at bay. Chimney Corner beach is one of the finest on the island, but because it is not visible from the road, it's usually unoccupied during the week– we love to take our dog Ryder there for a good run.

What makes this property unique

Chimney Corner beach is one of the finest on the island, and it's mostly unoccupied during the week– in addition to the fine beach and swimming, there are interesting rock formations to explore nearby. Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and you'll find the scenery on this stretch of coastline particularly striking.

There is no shortage of things to do in the area. There's a lovely new restaurant opening this summer just a half-mile north of this cottage. In addition to Chimney Corner beach, there are other great beaches to check out nearby: Whale Cove (5 minutes away) at which you can explore a fabulous bluff by the sea, with great views north and south, Margaree Harbour (7 minutes away), with its beach and two lighthouses, the Broad Cove area, which offers a spectacular scenic drive, a great beach and a buffalo ranch. Cheticamp, about 20 minutes away, offers glimpses into Acadian culture. Only minutes from Cheticamp is Cape Breton Highlands National Park, with trails, lookoffs and waterfalls. There are the gorgeous rolling hills and the gorgeous beach near Mabou, There are also renowned crafters in the area; interesting pottery, quilting, rug hooking, and folk art can all be found locally.
