Perfect house for our family ski trip

  • 5 of 5

This house was well located, close to downtown and the bus route. It was well stocked with the basics (detergent, fire wood, stuff for cooking, etc). Our only complaint was the lack of a kitchen table. The bar sits four, but if you have more people than that, someone is standing or sitting on the couch. We'd definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Hi Jeremy! Thanks for your review. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the home and its location to downtown. In the summer there is outdoor seating for dining, but in the winter you are limited to the bar seating. Unfortunately, there's no room for a dining room table. I hope this wasn't too much of an inconvenience. Please come back to visit again soon! Best, -- Christina Spatharos Reservations Manager Alpine Getaways

Excellent historic cottage in great location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed at Karla's over New Year's 2015 for a ski vacation. As other's have mentioned, the location of the cottage is fantastic if you wish to be in town. It was a short walk to the shopping, restaurants and bars of Elk, and the town bus stopped at 3rd and Whiterock, which is about 25' from the front door. We used the bus every day to the ski area and it was super easy, even for our 8 year old in his boots and carrying his skis. The local grocery store is only 3 blocks away, along with the liquor store. We didn't use our car the entire trip. The house is small, but you should expect that from an historic mining cabin. The kitchen is very well provisioned and the owners have done a great job decorating. It gets warm in the 2nd floor loft when using the wood stove, we had to crack a window. Alpine Getaways, the rental agent, is great, highly recommended.

Terrific house and awesome location all around

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over the summer and LOVED it. The house itself is gorgeous. It just 'felt' good. Lots of wood that is rustic but lots of contemporary too. And some unique built ins and great space. Loved the open kitchen/living room for cooking and hanging out. I wish I had this kitchen in my house! Lots of dishes so we could even have our friends over for dinner without having to combine dishes from their rental property. Had a cookout and hung out in the great backyard. The kids loved it and loved going to the skate park every day. It is close enough, out the back door and across the alley, that we would let them go on their own and check in on them by peeking across the road.

We could have put the kids both in the downstairs bed but one wanted to sleep in the pull out couch because he’s a “big” boy. It worked out great to have all of us there with essentially all having their own bedroom. The upstairs bed was super comfy.

There is a huge tub that the kids loved to play in- basically it is a hot tub in the house with adjustable jets and all. My husband and I (mostly I) loved soaking in it- the water came up to my neck....nothing like our little tub at home :)

We could walk to town in a minute (made it nice for running back and forth with kids needing things), nice for when we hired a babysitter we didn't know. Being in close proximity was calming. We rented bikes and rode all over town. The stop for the free shuttle is on the corner so we could run out when the bus came. We hope to go back this winter and take advantage of being able to walk out the door with our skis and not deal with the hassle of parking and walking, or paying to park. We had a hard time finding the summer bus schedule, we could only find winter and found out that it was different than summer.

This place worked great for our family. It would be a very romantic getaway too or fun for a group of friends, especially in the summer where you can hang out and bbq and have drinks in the backyard. We didn't bring our dog because she doesn't travel well but we may bring her next time because the backyard would have been perfect for her.

Owner's Response: Hi Ellie! Thank you so much for your kind words about your stay at Karla's Cottage. We are always happy to hear what made your stay memorable and it's our belief it all begins with comfortable accommodations. The remodel gave this home new life and unique charm. The location is hard to beat with easy access to Elk Avenue, the skate park and the free bus shuttle. I will make sure that the current bus schedule is in the property binder, so the next guests will have easy access to it! Thanks again and we look forward to having you stay with us this winter!

Location! Location! Location!

What a magical place to spend the week of Christmas! Karla's cottage was the perfect place for our single family to spend the Holidays! The beds were comfortable and the house had everything we needed. It was literally a minute walk from our doorstep to Elk Avenue, with it's twinkling lights and snow coming down, it was truly the perfect setting! The fenced in backyard was really nice to have while traveling with our beloved dog. We will be coming back!

Charming, comfortable cottage w/ awesome private, fenced-in backyard

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at this property for a week in July and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is the perfect combination of rustic charm (exposed beams, potbelly fireplace, hardwood floors, vintage antiques displayed, etc.) and updates (comfy bed, wifi, stainless steel appliances, bathrooms, jacuzzi tub, light fixtures, small flat screen, stereo system). The listing description and photos are accurate. In fact, the backyard patio is even more inviting and charming in person. What a great place to relax after an active day in the mountains!

We slept in the upstairs lofted area. The bed was very comfy. The pictures don't really show it, but it's worth mentioning that the upstairs bathtub is right near the bed. They handle it well with a fabric screen if you want to close it off a little bit. It didn't bother us at all. (We just put the screen in the closet to keep the space open.) With or without the screen, there's still privacy when you use the sink or toilet. Plus, the ceilings are vaulted with tons of natural light. Very open and airy.

The location is super convenient -- just 2 blocks off the main drag, Elk Ave, with all the restaurants and shops. In fact, when you walk to Elk Ave from the cottage, you are immediately at Secret Stash, the super popular pizza restaurant in town. (You pass one of our other favorite restaurants, Marchitelli's, if you are in the mood for Italian.) If you are familiar with the town, please don't overlook this cottage b/c it's on Whiterock, (which has a mix of beautiful renovated/restored homes with some rundown homes). We slept with our windows open -- just normal, acceptable "noises" like occasional dogs barking, people talking as they walk by, cars driving by, etc.

While there wasn't really much of a need to interact with the property manager (Alpine Getaways), when I did, they were responsive.

I would not hesitate to recommend this property to friends and family. We would return to this property in a heartbeat.
