About Ellen Knapp

I am a New Englander, transplanted to the southwest in 1975. My cousin built this beautiful house for my parents in 1980 so they could be near the Atlantic ocean. Since we love being outside, the house is perfect for us with its porches, large windows and access to the breezes and view of trees, the bay, birds and daily rose colored sunsets. We come here because we know we can relax.

Ellen Knapp purchased this house in 1980

Why Ellen Knapp chose Truro

We feel far away from big roads and stores and busy-ness. Our sons love to surf on the ocean side. At night, the trees around the house give us a quiet feeling of being remote and enveloped by the natural world. This part of the Cape is a haven for bird watchers and naturalists of all stripes. And not far away are wonderful restaurants and seafood markets, so we feel we have it all.

What makes this house unique

Even though we feel we are far away from towns, we do have internet cable service, carefully situated in the open loft, and there are in fact a couple of places to go nearby for bagels and coffee, and the paper. Our house is unique - artistically designed and simple, and very warm, much more than a vacation cabin.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Mrs Knapp, we the Hoyt family have arrived at your Truro house last night. I'm writing to share with you our family delight when we stepped into your house!

We stepped inside and felt our nervous anticipation greeted by a warm hug. Your home is so welcoming. Its perfect for our family with two teens. I was delighted to see my fourteen year old daughter settle in the first room to the right upstairs, and my twelve year old son planted in his own cool space in the tv loft, he has decided it feels like a tree house!

Its great for mom and dad to have our own independent space in the master suite!

I felt you should know that we have struggled with our new economy and unable to return to the cape for three years, we were in need for family bonding, leaving the drudge of school and work behind and be in our favorite place ( the cape) to just be us. To the real estate office chagrin you offered your home to me at a very affordable rate!

I can't thank you enough! We are hanging, relaxing, exploring, cooking our favorite thanksgiving dinner. Its just what the Dr. ordered!

I hope this note finds you well and warms your heart, you are a blessing to my family!

Incredible Home Rest and Recharge

  • 5 of 5

We returned this year after our first stay at this beautiful home one year ago, because it drew us back, as did the cape itself. I knew when I walked in the door that all my worries and cares were going to dissolve, and they did. This is not your typical vacation rental. It feels more like you've invaded the home of some cousins, or other relatives. Everything is there that you might need, such as kitchen essentials, from dishes, to utensils, pans, and even spices, as well as many books and games. The three most amazing things about this house are its layout, the artwork throughout, and the view of Pamet Harbor. The pictures do not do justice to the view. The harbor, and Cape Cod Bay just beyond, can be seen clearly, especially on a clear day, and best from the upstairs loft. Your eyes will be drawn there like a magnet. Other than the view, the house is surrounded by mature pine trees that wrap around it like a warm hug, and with plenty of sky lights, there is a nature view/feel from every window. The layout of the house must be very feng shui, though I am not an expert, all I know is that it has amazing Flow! And yes, three couples (or 6 people) can enjoy this house without being on top of each other. There is a living room with fireplace, and the upstairs loft (just above it) has the TV with satellite dish. The large kitchen is easy to move around in. We took turns cooking for each other. The master bedroom is spacious and relaxing. The floors are beautiful knotty pine. And last but not least, the artwork on the walls gives the entire house its unique character, most of it done by the owner's mother who was very talented with watercolors; several of the paintings are scenes of places nearby.

I will echo someone else too, in saying that the location is very convenient to both Wellfleet and Provincetown, where you can find grocery stores, shops, galleries, and restaurants, in a 15-20 minute drive. And you can walk to Corn Hill Beach in about 10 minutes. The house is nestled in the woods and is very private, you can't see the neighbors, who are quiet, and not far away.

I hope we make it back again for a third time!

Owner's Response: Thank you Amy for such a wonderful description of our beloved house. I am sure the house was so glad you were there. We love having people like you come stay in the house because it's like keeping an engine charged and healthy, to have it used in an appreciate way. Please do come back and make your reservations very early in the year. thank you again, Ellen

Quiet, comfortable, beautiful rental

  • 5 of 5

If you are going to rent a house on the Cape, make it this one. It is a gem on every level: conveniently situated to beaches/Route 6, quiet, very comfortable, well-appointed and thoughtfully designed. It is large enough to accommodate my family and friends, and its layout allows for early birds and night owls to happily coexist under one roof. The aesthetic decisions made in its construction create not only a beautiful environment, but also a cozy one. Every winter, I start dreaming about the outdoor shower, grilling on the deck, eating on the screened-in porch and jigsaw puzzles sometime around January. One of the happiest days of the year for me is the day our rental here is confirmed for the following season! We hold very dear the memories shared in this home over the years and hope to create many more!

Owner's Response: Again, thank you for being the kinds of guests who love and care for our house. I feel that the house has so much soul and generosity of spirit, itself! And so we love to know that there are people in it who feel the same're always welcome back!!

A quiet peaceful marvelous country house

  • 5 of 5

My family has stayed in this comfortable, well-equipped house for several summers, and each generation from little to big loves it. The house adapts well to its inhabitants. Even when you're indoors, you feel as though you are outside because of the light, airyness, and view of the water. It is also close enough to grocery stores, restaurants, and a number of beaches to be very convenient but far enough out of the Route 6 crush to keep you from spending your time in traffic. The house is attractive, clean, and well maintained, and we look forward to returning for another year.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your description of our house! We always love having guests stay at the house who "get" it and love it as much as we do. Over time, repeat guests who inhabit and love our house become kind of family members.. for me and especially for the house itself!

Amazing house

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing house! I really hadn't anticipated that it would be so special. The design and so many of the details were just fascinating, and we all really appreciated the original artwork, produced by the owner's mother. We hope to stay in this house again someday. It is also very comfortable and practical, and in all, really just a little treasure!

Quite, comfortable, wonderful to come back to after a long day hiking or at the beach!

  • 5 of 5

I wanted a house for a month, so it had to be really comfortable and spacious, and the surrounding area had to be quite. I got all all that and more with this property! And the location is beautiful with gorgeous views of the woods and the water in the distance. The inside of the house is very different, very unique (at least from my perspective). WiFi Internet access was perfect, reliable and fast, only one disruption for several hours for only one day (out of an entire month, not bad), and most likely from the service provider, not the router. My only interest in the Cape is from Wellfleet to Provincetown, so obviously this location is perfect for short distance rides to wherever I wanted to go. Also, really nice artwork by one of the owners! I would not even bother looking for any other properties in the future, I would definitely rent this house again. Thank you Ellen and Duarte & Duarte!

Great location and home with character.

  • 5 of 5

This property has wonderful character and is a great location. The loft allowed the kids a space of their own and we were able to enjoy the quite and views of the Pamet River. The deck and screened in porch are a real treat. We spent a wonderful July 4th on Corn Hill Beach which is within a short bike ride or long walk. The family art work and library added to the charm.

Owner's Response: We love the view of the Pamet Harbor and bay. And the porch is one of the breeziest places in Truro! And yes the loft is a very magical place for kids, artists, afternoon nappers, or as a place to watch movies, without disrupting the peace and quiet of the rest of the house!
