About Kathleen Burwell

My name is Kathleen Burwell; my husband's name is John. John was born and raised in Redding. I moved to Redding with my parents and siblings in 1966. I retired from teaching in 2010 after 37 years. John is a retired general contractor. We have no children but do have several nieces and nephews, and always at least two dogs.

Kathleen Burwell purchased this house in 1973

Why Kathleen Burwell chose Shasta Cascade

My parents bought the property where Battle Creek Retreat stands in 1973. They began building the house in 1976 and completed it in 1977. My mother died in 2000, my father in 2001. The house was left in a trust for nine family members. In 2008 we turned it into a vacation rental. In December of 2013 John and I purchased it from the rest of the family. It has become a fulfilling retirement project.

What makes this house unique

The beauty of the mountains can be found in the many lakes, streams, and forests. The elevation is about 4000 feet, so in a typical year, there is snow in the winter time, allowing for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer time, the main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park. There are several points of interest within an hour's drive of Battle Creek Retreat. The springtime is beautiful with the redbud and dogwood in bloom. The fall is equally as beautiful with the many leaves of brilliant color.

Our property provides activities within a short walk. Battle Creek runs along one border of our property. In fact, our property goes to the middle of the creek. Kids and dogs alike love to play in the creek. Lake McCumber is within walking distance. There are several logging trails where guests can walk their dogs, although no motorized vehicles are allowed.

On the back patio there is a gazebo, a firepit, a picnic table, and a lot of seating. It is enclosed to give it a feel of complete privacy, although a lack of privacy is certainly not an issue at Battle Creek Retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks a lot for the wonderful welcome. The kids and us had a great time and really enjoyed the evening smors by the fire. we are hoping to come back soon and enjoy the cabin and the surrounding scenery.

It is our second time in your cabin and we again had a wonderful time. The kids had a blast and they loved Rebel's Retreat (bunkhouse). We hope to be back soon.

Quietly prepare for the New Year, 2017

  • 5 of 5

Battle Creek Retreat was the perfect spot for my end of year quiet time away from the world. I loved the fires in the fire place and the snow that covered much of the grounds. I really prayed for snow and it snowed on New Year's day. It was so beautiful and refreshing. Driving was a little iffy without chains so remember to plan ahead if any chance of snow. The house is so well equipped that there was nothing extra I needed. I took my little dog and she loved romping in the snow too. My favorite room is the master bedroom with a perfectly lovely view of the back and side of the property with clear access to the sounds of the creek babbling. The bed was very comfortable and cozy as well. Kathy and John are the best! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with me.

Owner's Response: Patsy, it was so nice to read your review and to know how much you enjoyed your winter solitude! The thing about bookings this time of year is never knowing what the weather will be. I'm glad you had snow but, as you told me, it would've been nice having it early in your stay. You made the right call leaving when you did. I hope you'll be back - you were a wonderful guest!

Great place to spend the holidays

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time spending our holidays here. We had snow on the ground and it was perfect. Kathleen was easy to reach. The cabin is charming and the location is beautiful.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Christabeth! I'm always happy to know that people enjoy Battle Creek Retreat as much as our family always has! The weather has been so unpredictable, with snow, then rain, etc. As much as we enjoy the snow, it can become a problem when it comes to driving. I'm glad you were able to make your way out! Thank you again for your review and rating!

Breathtakingly beautiful, most comfortable and awesome stay

  • 5 of 5

Kathleen is the best host we have ever had. She is extremely prompt and helpful. The property is the most systematic, well put together, organized, beautiful and comfortable place we have ever stayed in before. We loved the place and will recommend to everyone. We went in the winters with snow all over adding to the magical beauty of the place. Just love love love the place.

Peaceful and Serene

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful spot to get away from hectic city life and only about 40 miles from Redding. We left the bedroom sliding door ajar and could hear Battle Creek rushing by. A beautiful rustic fireplace in the living room provided ample heat for the frosty nights. Beds were very comfortable and the beautiful forest could be enjoyed from all

windows. A truly great weekend!

Owner's Response: Karen, you picked a great time of year to be at Battle Creek Retreat. The creek had been fairly quiet due to low flows. But, with the recent rains, it is rushing now and providing one of the most pleasant sounds of the forest. I'm so glad you were able to experience not only the sounds, but also the smells, the clean air, and the colors. "Peaceful and serene" so aptly describe Battle Creek Retreat. I'm glad you were able to enjoy the fireplace. Many of our guests have described the home as cozy. That's always been my feeling, as well. Thank you for treating the home with so much respect, Karen. We could hardly tell you were there! We hope you return. Regards, Kathy

Beautiful comfortable place on the river

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed our weekend at this cozy home on Battle Creek. Our dogs loved the large enclosed yard, our kids loved playing in the creek and the fishing was amazing in the area. Very well appointed home with all amenities one needs and the fire pit outside was perfect for smores at night. Hope to stay again soon!

Owner's Response: Doris, thank you for your review and for sharing with us the things you enjoyed. I'm not into fishing but I do know that this part of Northern California has so much to offer in that regard. In fact, it is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. That's what drew my family to the area in the 1960's. When my parents built BCR in the 70's, we found heaven. I am so glad you were able to enjoy the area and look forward to you returning! Regards, Kathy

Great family cabin, lots to do on site, and fully stocked!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four loved the Battle Creek retreat. It provided a great launching point to lassen where we did a few hikes (bumpass hell and manzanita lake worked well with little ones). We also spent a day driving north to burney falls and subway cave for a few more hikes. When we didn't feel like leaving we stayed on the property and walked around the creek in the backyard or down to the lake nearby. Supposedly amazing fishing there as well, but we didn't get a nibble (probably too late in the season). The cabin clearly is an important part of the family, and it's treated as such - it had everything we could need, including toys for a 2-year old. Would definitely stay again when we next visit Lassen.

Owner's Response: Elliott, when we went to clean after your departure, I went into the sunroom to see if your children had played with the toys. Everything was put back in its place, so much so that I thought you hadn't discovered the toys or games. I was disappointed thinking you didn't realize they were there. So when you mentioned the toys, I was thrilled to know your two-year-old enjoyed them. That house is so very family-oriented, thanks to my parents' influence. It sounds like your family enjoyed the area to the max, Bumpass Hell to Burney Falls. You spent your days at BCR the way we used to with our parents. Northern California has so much to offer, and you were able to experience that with your family. Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We would welcome you back anytime! Regards, Kathy
