About Kathleen Burwell

My name is Kathleen Burwell; my husband's name is John. John was born and raised in Redding. I moved to Redding with my parents and siblings in 1966. I retired from teaching in 2010 after 37 years. John is a retired general contractor. We have no children but do have several nieces and nephews, and always at least two dogs.

Kathleen Burwell purchased this house in 1973

Why Kathleen Burwell chose Shasta Cascade

My parents bought the property where Battle Creek Retreat stands in 1973. They began building the house in 1976 and completed it in 1977. My mother died in 2000, my father in 2001. The house was left in a trust for nine family members. In 2008 we turned it into a vacation rental. In December of 2013 John and I purchased it from the rest of the family. It has become a fulfilling retirement project.

What makes this house unique

The beauty of the mountains can be found in the many lakes, streams, and forests. The elevation is about 4000 feet, so in a typical year, there is snow in the winter time, allowing for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer time, the main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park. There are several points of interest within an hour's drive of Battle Creek Retreat. The springtime is beautiful with the redbud and dogwood in bloom. The fall is equally as beautiful with the many leaves of brilliant color.

Our property provides activities within a short walk. Battle Creek runs along one border of our property. In fact, our property goes to the middle of the creek. Kids and dogs alike love to play in the creek. Lake McCumber is within walking distance. There are several logging trails where guests can walk their dogs, although no motorized vehicles are allowed.

On the back patio there is a gazebo, a firepit, a picnic table, and a lot of seating. It is enclosed to give it a feel of complete privacy, although a lack of privacy is certainly not an issue at Battle Creek Retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks a lot for the wonderful welcome. The kids and us had a great time and really enjoyed the evening smors by the fire. we are hoping to come back soon and enjoy the cabin and the surrounding scenery.

It is our second time in your cabin and we again had a wonderful time. The kids had a blast and they loved Rebel's Retreat (bunkhouse). We hope to be back soon.

  • 5 of 5

This well built and well maintained property has everything you could possibly need to get away and retreat....plus journey into the Lassen National Forest and Park. Explore the forest, reconnect with your family or stay in and write the great American novel...with cable and wifi.

Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

We just enjoyed five nights in this cabin.

We spent most of our time exploring the area. Lake Britton, Burney Falls State Park, Hat Creek, Lassen National Park etc. We hiked, kayaked, tubed, fished, and enjoyed learning about the area. We were disappointed that the road through Lassen was still not open but with the amount of snow we had this winter it was understandable.

Battle Creek Retreat was perfect for our needs. The house had everything we needed and more. The property was expansive with many seating areas. It was nice to learn about the history of the cabin and that of the family that owns it. You can see how much they loved this place and obviously have so many wonderful memories here. It is wonderful that they allow others to share in those memories, while creating memories of our own.

Thank you Kathy for the hospitality and for the many personal touches provided.

Owner's Response: Michael, you covered a lot of ground during your stay! I love it when guests explore and experience the unique features of the area. You're providing the kind of childhood for your children that my parents did for my siblings and me. I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet you and your family. That rarely happens. I love the hearts that were chalked on the tree stumps, which I'm assuming your daughter did. I can't thank you enough for treating the house as your own, leaving it so clean, and for going beyond what is asked of our guests. If you visit the area again, you would certainly be welcome. Maybe next time, the road through Lassen Park will be open (it's suppose to reopen next week; SO much snow through late spring). Thanks again, Mike!

Perfect mountain retreat

  • 5 of 5

This charming house in the woods is beautifully equipped and was very comfortable for our group of 4 friends. We spent two days walking in Lassen National Park and the third visiting the surprisingly good wineries 10 miles away in Manton. Deer visited the yard in the mornings. Evenings were spent barbecuing under the stars at the outdoor tables, enjoying the sounds of the creek below the house. Lassen was uncrowded, beautiful and its geological history was amazing. Local shopping in Shingletown was basic but sufficient for extra items to add to groceries bought in Reno en route to the house. Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Janet! I'm glad you were able to enjoy your stay. Lassen Volcanic National Park is a huge draw to our area but not many of our guests visit the Manton wineries. When I have a girls' weekend at BCR we always go to the Forward Rd. wineries - they're all different and the owners of each one are wonderful. The deer have been abundant the last couple of years. I see they enjoy my geraniums and dogwood! It's fun to observe the wildlife. That and the sound of the rushing creek and the clearness of the night sky make for a real forest experience. I love it!

Charming cabin surrounded by tranquil woods

  • 5 of 5

Incredible hosts. Fantastic cabin for spending family time near nature.

The cabin was perfect for our family of 5. Everything we could have needed was already provided. We found the kitchen to be well stocked with pots, pans, plates, etc. Beds were comfortable. Cable TV with kids channels was a pleasant surprise.

The cabin is ideally situated as a home base for exploring Northern California. We were able to hit Subway Caves and Burney Falls on one day, then explore Lassen National park another day.

Battle Creek is quite literally a short walk from the front door. Our kids has a blast playing near the creek, mostly skipping stones. No fish in the creek, but if you head up the road to McCumber Reservoir is just a few miles up the road and is stocked with fish.

Coming into this home, we really felt like we were family. Unlike so many rentals with generic decorations, this cabin has the distinct feeling of a personal retreat. From the family pictures on the wall to the family history traced through 10 generations all the way to the Mayflower. You can't help but feel that you are invited to be part of of something special.

Our hosts were incredibly generous. There was plenty of firewood for the outdoor firepit. A welcome basket with key ingredients for s'mores welcomed us on our arrival.

Some quick tips if you are visiting the area: There is no AT&T cell phone coverage in this area. Verizon appears to work fine. Be very careful with following GPS directions in this part of the state. Some GPS apps will route you through unpaved or (worse) logging roads!

Owner's Response: Wow, Brad! Thank you for such a descriptive review of a variety of things. You and your family hit a lot of great sights - Subway Caves, Burney Falls, Lassen Park. It's a terrific area for people of all ages to explore. I appreciate you mentioning the lack of AT&T coverage in the area and cautioning potential visitors about the possible ineffectiveness of GPS. That's information I hadn't considered putting out there. Thank you for mentioning details regarding the house. I beamed when I read that you felt "like you were invited to be a part of something special". My parents were incredible people who made others always feel welcome. They had many friends with whom they enjoyed their home. I'm glad we can continue to let others enjoy it, as well!

Comfortable, spacious and a short drive to Lassen Volcanic National Park.

  • 5 of 5

Our family traveled from Chicago to visit the national parks in Northern California and southern Oregon. We stayed at this rental when we visited Lassen Volcanic National Park. The house was spacious with a cozy cabin feel. The owner really kept the place tidy. We were welcomed with s'mores on arrival - definitely a nice touch! We love the surrounding rich forest community and easy access to the park. Would definitely recommend this house to any family visiting Lassen NP!

Owner's Response: Kelly, I'm glad you and your family enjoyed your visit to our part of the country. It sounds like you covered a lot of ground! We got so much snow this past winter in the mountains; I hope you were able to drive all the way through the park. The lakes are so beautiful and the trails offer something for everyone. Thank you for taking the time to write such a favorable review, Kelly. You were very considerate renters.

Wonderful family retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Thanks so much for sharing your lovely family home. There is so much love and care put into this property. Best night sleep I have had in months with the cool temperatures and sound of the creek. We really appreciated the treats that you left...I hope they were for us! Great care taken to use plush towels and linens and I appreciated the HUGE binder with ideas of what to do in the area. Even just sitting on one of the many amazing porches and listening to the kids play in the creek was heavenly. My only regret was not staying longer. I will be recommending this to all my friends here at Beale AFB as a wonderful place to reconnect with your family and friends. Thanks for making our last few weeks in CA so memorable!

Owner's Response: Heather, I want to thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful review. I know how very busy you must be with your move. I'm so glad you were able to go to Subway Cave, Burney Falls, and other places of interest. It's such a beautiful area. I'm thankful you'll be taking memories of your Northen California trip with you, and am hopeful that Battle Creek Retreat will figure in. You and your family were such great guests, very respectful of the place, very neat, very thoughtful. Thank you for that and, again, thank you for the review. And, oh, yes, for recommending BCR to your friends at Beale. We already have a booking from one of the families!
