Architect / artist converted 17th C' farmhouse in World Heritage Site

Bedrooms 4
Space 1,829 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, from 4 to 8 adults

The Cottage (3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms) accommodates 6 people. The Cottage + Annex (extra separate ensuite double for 2) together accommodate 8 people. Prices are explained under the section 'Additional information about rental rates'

Casa do Celeiro was discovered by its architect / artist owners in 1980. It was a ruin which had been the stable/barn of a 'quinta'(manor house and farm). The main attractions of the site were its views of the Serra and the sea and its seclusion and intimacy due to being a courtyard built into a hill. The house today has the same basic format but is now suitable for self-catering groups of 4 to 8. There is an 8m dia. pool at the top of the property and a stone terrace with pergola and large garden in front of the Cottage. The Cottage has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large sit-in conservatory on the upper level with view to a private courtyard. The kitchen / living room are on the ground floor and the annex 10 metres across the courtyard is ideal for a couple. The Cottage which accommodates up to 6 adults is priced on the rates table. Guests who need the Cottage plus the Annex (separate ensuite bedroom) should check for the price in notes beneath the rates table. The Annex has a double bed, en suite bathroom with a small terrace facing the Serra and sea. The house is comfortably furnished and although not luxurious it is charming and rustic. The tranquil setting, fabulous views of sea and hills and close proximity to Almoçageme the local village make this property a magnificent retreat.

Art Courses: The owners live on site in separate quarters. They work as artists and offer short courses from time to time. Guests may be interested in participating in the drawing & painting or etching courses and are encouraged to indicate their interest when booking. Alan designs and makes contemporary sculpture and jewelery. Mary is a painter and a printer. Please ask owners for their website for more details / photos of house, courses, and area.

Piano: there is an old upright piano (Hoffmann) in the Cottage living room which although slightly out of tune and with worn keys is quite ok for sight reading and composing but not for recitals.

Owners' Background: Alan who is British worked as an architect in London at BDP (Building Design Partnership). He qualified at the AA (Architectural Association). When he moved to Portugal he opened an architectural office in Cascais in 1980. He retired in 1992. He nows paints watercolours and designs and makes scupture and jewellery. Mary, American, also worked as an architect, having completed her diploma at the Central London Poly (now Westminster College). She also has degrees in Art History, International Education and painting and etching. She was head of the Art Department at St. Julian's School in Lisbon and continues to teach on a part time basis. She and Alan exhibit their work regularly.

Golf, tennis, beaches: Several golf courses within 20 minute drive. Beloura is considered the best golf course for tourists as it has a more open and friendly atmosphere. Tennis and water sports within 10 minutes. 3 beaches within 5-10 minutes drive: Praias (beach) das Maças, Adraga and Grande all have restaurants and cafes on waterfront / Guincho Beach (15 minutes drive) has international surfing / wind surfing and excellent up market restaurants / Praia Grande has surfing lessons and hire.

A Biker’s Paradise

One of the major advantages of the positioning of our house is that it is right in the Serra de Sintra with splendid views up and down the Lisbon coast. For a mountain biker this is very advantageous as we are at the entrance of one the mountain roads so you can ride directly into the Serra. From this road thre are many dirt paths to take you deeper into the Serra. We also have one mountain bike on loan.

About Mary St.George

I grew up in Wisconsin, studied history of art at Connecticut College and then lived and worked in NYC. I moved to the UK where I met my architect husband. I also studied architecture and we moved to Portugal in 1980 to set up an architectural practice. I also taught art at a local British secondary school and now work as an artist and teach in my studio.

Mary St.George purchased this house in 1981

Why Mary St.George chose Almoçageme

We found a 17th ruin (barn and stable) attached to an old 'quinta' (up-market farm) and as architects took our time developing it for our family and now for guests.

What makes this house unique

World Heritage Site (Serra de Sintra), secluded setting with panoramic views of Atlantic and Serra. Close enough to amenities but away from noise and crowds. Converted by owners / architects. Full of paintings, etchings and sculpture. A place for artists to retreat to work or relax. Mary open to teach art students in her studio.

Old upright piano. There is a sturdy Hoffman piano which is fine for sight reading and composing but not for recitals. Slightly out of tune and with worn keys but still fun to play on.

One of the advantages of our position in the Serra de Sintra is that we are within easy reach of spotting interesting local birds. Our house is on the edge of the Serra (Pé da Serra, Colares, Sintra) so that one can walk up into the low wooded mountains directly from the house. There is also a link (Portuguese) with more information:

Some of the local birds in the area include: Sparrow Hawk, Bonelli’s Eagle, Black Swift, Green Woodpecker, Black Cap Warbler, ‘Ferreinha alpina’ among others.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We (a group of friends from Warsaw) spent one wonderful week in Casa de Celeiro in Pe da Serra.

Before we arrived there we had seen the house and its surroundings in the pictures. But the photos don’t show the real beauty of this place. Everything there is fabulous. And the view from the terrace and from the windows of our bedrooms is breathtaking. You are sitting on the terrace under the grapevine, admiring the green hills and the ocean which is only three kilometres from you. When you are at the pool you have the same view. Besides, it is worth mentioning that the house is full of nice paintings (originals, not copies), which makes you feel like you are in an art gallery.

We would like to thank Mary from the bottom of our hearts for the possibility to spend our holiday in a lovely house with a beautiful soul and a magical view of the ocean. We will cherish our memories from this stay for a long time to come. We are sending warm wishes to our amazing hosts.

Self-catering guests are self-contained with their own kitchen/living/sleeping quarters. It is possible to arrange a cook in the evenings. The many stairs and hilly environment make it very difficult for wheelchair access. The garden has many fruit trees (apple, pear, lemon, plum, fig). There are 4 reclining chairs at the pool + 5 chairs. The house backs onto the Serra so guests can go on walks without having to get into a car. There is a beautiful mountain road on the doorstep where biking enthusiasts can explore the area. One mountain bike on site is available for guests. As the owners are artists and have their studios on site, guests may participate in courses in drawing & painting or etching with prior arrangement and depending on group size. Walks directly behind house into the wooded hills of the Serra de Sintra with stunning views up and down the coast. Interesting sites: Peninha, Capuchos, Malveira village. A friend nearby has 2 horses. Contact for more info.

Wonderful stay in an idyllic retreat

  • 5 of 5

We (two adults and two children, age 8 and 9) just returned from a nearly 2 week stay in Mary and Alan's beautiful home. The setting is picture-perfect and the photos do not adequately capture the gorgeous landscaping and special setting: it is high up on a hill (very steep driveway!) with spectacular views of the ocean from virtually every window. Sunsets are incredible, and we often enjoyed a glass of wine on the outside terrace (under a grape arbor) while watching them. The aerial photo gives a sense of the terraced quality of the property. Our boys particularly liked the garden/yard level (first floor of the house with the outdoor terrace) where they played with the sweet dog Alma. They also loved the daily swims in the pool (third level) -- the pool and gardens surrounding it are lovely and this level has spectacular views as well.

The house is comfortable and has all amenities needed and was very clean. Mary thoughtfully stocked the kitchen with basics before our arrival. She was incredibly helpful and responsive throughout our stay with great suggestions and ideas. We also arranged for Mary to give a private drawing lesson to our sons, and we'll treasure the drawings they did. Mary's artwork adorns the house, and we purchased a beautiful print of the mountains to remind us of our stay.

The location is incredibly well situated for getting to beaches, exploring Sintra and Cascais (we went back to both a few times). Colares and Almocageme are perfect small towns for basics -- several good bars and restaurants, good grocery stores (don't let the size of the one in Almocageme fool you -- it's well priced and stocked!). One of our favorite meals at home included the delicious grilled chicken (available on the main square in Almocageme or next to the grocery store in Colares.) And of course lots of vino verdhe! The farmer's market in Almocageme was terrific as well (Saturday / Sunday). We hiked on the trail that begins on the property and while the first part of the passage is fairly overgrown, it opens up to a nice trail that is shaded and offers a lovely walk for the whole family.

A friend came for the last week and stayed in the downstairs bedroom (of the main cottage, not the annex). It is a private set up and quite separate from the upstairs bedrooms where we stayed.

We've stayed in many rental homes and this one is quite special -- both the place and the lovely host. We can't recommend it more!

Owner's Response: We are over the moon with this lovely family group and their very charming review. If owners were to rate their guests this would have to be a 5 star. It is always extremely rewarding to get to know and interact with our guests and when it happens like this you feel marvelous. Thank you!!

Beautiful home with amazing views!

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful home, very spacious, fully equipped and with amazing views. The garden is enormous, greatly appreciated by our dog, and there's a great pool if you need some refreshment.

The location is supreme, half an hour by car from Lisbon, only 5-10 minutes from breathtaking beaches (Praia da Adraga) and just 15 min from some of the most beautiful palaces and castles (we visited Montserrat palace, castle of the Moors and of course Palacio da Pena).

The owners of this beautiful place are artists and were very sweet and made us feel very welcome. Thank you!!!

Owner's Response: This was a lovely family from Barcelona, mother from Holland and father from Barcelona. All spoke many languages well including English so we communicated a lot. The dog was a lovely sweet natured extra and reminded us of our last dog who we lost some months ago. Thank you for enjoying our home and taking great care of it!

Great views, spacious surroundings and good pool

  • 5 of 5

This peaceful, spacious and cosy house was exactly what we wanted. The house is equipped with all necessities and has a nice and cosy fire place, for when its gets colder in the evening. Although it was October we never felt cold in the house. There is a baby bed, high chair, a safety gate and even some toys for kids. Although there are many steps, small children can have a wonder full time here (especially when they like dogs - dog/Alma is very sweet!).

You would need a car to get there. And don't worry: you will get used to the steep drive up to the house very quickly :-)

We can also recommend Mary's lovely friend Sarah who can cook you a delicious meal at the house. Especially after a long flight, so nice!

Thanks again Mary!!

Owner's Response: It was a real pleasure to host this charming family who actually came to celebrate their marriage at a local wedding venue. Their parents frequently joined them, some stayed in the house as well and the sense of occasion and fun was evident. The weather also was mostly kind to them which is often the case in the Sintra fall. Thank you for staying with us!

Magnifique villa au coeur de la région de Sintra

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much for your kind response to staying in Casa do Celeiro. Just sorry I could not polish my pitiful French during your stay. Merci beacoup!

Fantastic holidays in Portugal

  • 5 of 5

We had a really great time at the house which has been lovingly restored, and was very comfortable, perfect for our group with children of different ages and three adults. Everything was clean and working and Mary was very helpful. The garden is very well kept and you have the feeling that you are in the middle of the forest with greenaery all around you. The swimming pool area was delightful and it was difficult to get everybody to go out, but we made a couple of trips to Lisbon which was very easy to get to by car, and also to Sintra and Cascais. We saw the sunset at Cabo de Roca, the most westerly point of continental Europe and also had an interesting visit to the Capuchinos Franciscan monastery, which is very close to the house.

I would definitely recommend this property to anybody who wants a relaxing holiday in a bueatiful setting.

Owner's Response: Thanks for this delightful review. This family group was a wonderful mix of English and Spanish and and truly enjoyed themselves and the area which was new to them. We do notice that when the weather is divine the pool is extremely welcoming and it is sometimes hard to get in the site seeing. A balance is the answer on a holiday.

Einfach top! Der Abschied fiel uns schwer.

Lord Byron’s letter to his mother, August 11, 1809

‘The village of Cintra about 15 miles from the capitol is perhaps in every respect the most delightful in Europe, it contains beauties of every description natural and artificial, Palaces and gardens rising in the midst of rocks, cataracts, and precipices, convents on stupendous heights a distant view of the sea and the Tagus, …..’

Sintra is a World Heritage Site. In June and early July there is a classical music festival and the concerts take place in a number of stunning quinta's (manor houses) and palaces. There is a huge range of historic monuments and gardens to visit (National Palace in Sintra Vila, Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, Capuchos - convent built into rock, Quinta de Regaleira - turn of the century palace and gardens full of grottos and follies and Monserrate Gardens among others. The Sintra Modern Art Museum and Olga Cadaval Culture Centre have up-to-date and exciting exhibitions and concerts.

Other Activities: art courses on site

Golf: Many people like to stay a bit further away from the center so that they can for example enjoy a golfing holiday but also visit the historic sites in Sintra as well as its many lovely beaches which are a bit off the normal tourist track. As we are situated halfway between Sintra Vila and Cascais/Estoril we offer the quiet and beauty of the Serra de Sintra (World Heritage Site) which has many stunning historic gardens and old palaces and castles but are close enough to the golf courses and other activities in Cascais and Estoril which is 15 minutes away. Walking in the Sintra hills is easy from our house and if you like the company of our dog Alma she is always willing to oblige.
