We have done some remodeling and have added a garage w/second floor master bedroom suite w/king bed, upstairs balcony, two fireplaces and air conditioning. The second master bedroom suite (queen bed) is on the first floor. The two-story, contemporary home is very open with lots of light and spectacular views of Lake Michigan and small islands. It has a wrap-around deck and easy access to the water.

The home is on a dead-end road leading into a 2700-acre, semi-wilderness, state park with hiking trails, sand beaches, and biking trails. The wildflowers on the peninsula alone are worth the trip. Close by is Europe Lake which can be reached on a foot path in five minutes.

About Dr. Anna

I am a retired psychologist. My late husband and I bought this home in 1987, after he moved with me to the country around Madison, giving up his dream of living on one of the Madison Lakes. I promised that we would eventually buy a place on a lake. Since he wanted to hear the sound of the waves I knew we had to find a place on Lake Michigan.

Dr. Anna purchased this house in 2000

Why Dr. Anna chose Ellison Bay

We had lots of fun looking for our home away from home for 5 years. Then we found what we were looking for. The home has a breathtaking view of the Lake. It was in the quieter part of Door County, next to the unofficial entrance of beautiful Newport State Park. We remodeled and added on to the house about 7 years ago and just loved what our favorite architect did. He transformed the already contemporary home into a stunning place. Many thanks to Dave Valentin, architect in Sturgeon Bay

What makes this house unique

The house is contemporary , it has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Altogether it has 4 queen size beds, 1 standard and 1 king. The new master bedroom and bathroom are absolutely stunning. The two upstairs guest bedrooms are huge. It is very comfortable, the kitchen is well stocked, since I love to cook. We are planning a flower garden in the spring.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Or family had a great time and couldn't have been more pleased with our stay! We enjoyed the amazing lake view (the owners had recently completed work removing trees from the shoreline)and the very spacious accomodations. We were able to relax, sit around the talble playing cards and enjoying some great home cooked meals in the well equipped kitchen. The deck is lovely! Sure you have to clean it pretty much daily- it's under trees and on a lake shore....but it was exacltly what one should expect. But best of all, Dr. Anna was an absolute pleasure to work with! She was very friendly and very agreeable. Thanks for a great weekend!

Very clean, spacious, ideal location nestled in woods right on Lake Michigan!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful experience for group of friends to enjoy one another & adventures, from paddle boarding ( brought own ), swimming in cold Lake, kayak fishing on Europe Lake, hiking in state park down the street or going to beaches or shopping. We did it all! And we relaxed, read, had long talks, sat around table & played cards. Kitchen was great! Bedrooms were just right, as were bathrooms. Love the glass wall looking over Lake & the unique loft turned into bedrooms that worked so well.

Owner's Response: Dear Ken, thank you for your nice review. I am glowing, trying very hard to offer a good stay. so glad you liked it. We are newlyweds (two young 70 year olds) and will be spending our honeymoon there, end of August, can't wait to take long hikes in the State Park, having Lake Michigan to my left and Europe Lake to my right is paradise. Of course I always have my mushroom bag along, late summer, early fall is great hunting and eating. I also like to kayak in beautiful Europe Lake. I will also see to it that things are o.k. at the house, that it is well stocked, super clean and maybe we'll start our project of ripping out the Junipers and starting a flower garden. Please come again. Anna

Great location and property, needs some TLC

  • 3 of 5

Overall a great location and property. Our group had a comfortable as well as memorable stay.

However, the house as well as the deck and yard outside were not impeccably maintained. The grass was fairly tall when we got there, it seemed that it had not been mowed in 2-3 weeks.Someone did come and mow the lawn on Sunday. We cleaned and washed the deck when we got there so it was usable. It seemed that no one had done that in a while. Inside of the house was neat and clean, except for cobwebs on the light fixtures and ceilings. Other than that the house had all the amenities and was stocked with supplies and linens.

I believe that attention to these details can easily make this a 5 star property.

Owner's Response: Dear Leena, thank you for your review. I am glad you liked the inside of my house . I will work with the caretaker and cleaning lady to remedy all of your concerns. Usually I am up there at least once a month., to see to it that everything is o.k. But this year I got married and haven't been up as often. We were there after your stay and took care of the cobwebs. I am very committed to making my place a showcase for my guests, Thank you again, Anna

our most memorable vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family and I have been staying at this beautiful home once a year. We are part of the maintenance crew, fixing anything that might need attention, clearing the trees and bushes to open up the view toward the lake, making suggestions for improvement.

My family and I are looking forward to our work/play vacation all year long. Whenever we arrive at the house it is immaculate. The house is spacious , the beds are comfortable, the kitchen has all the gadgets my wife wants, it accomodates our family

0f 5 very well, with room to spare. We have always felt extremely comfortable.

I am planning on removing the junipers next spring and the owner will design and plant a flower garden. I suggested this to the owner and can't wait to see it to completion. The owner is easy to work with and eager to pick up on most of my suggestions.

We hope all of us get to enjoy this wonderful place for years to come. We treasure our memories of Door County, in our home away from home.

Breathtaking location overshadowed by dirty home! Immense disappointment - RENTERS beware!

  • 1 of 5

A group of seven of us spent 5 days at this rental. The house is very large and on the waterfront which is why we chose it. Although the location is breathtaking and the house COULD be lovely, we would give a no-star rating if we could!

We have rented numerous homes in and around Door County and have never had to spend most of our time cleaning! One of us actually spoke with their housekeeper, Terri, whilst she was actually at the house a couple of hours prior to our arrival. The house is basically dirty... the stove top, countertop, coffee table, bathrooms and bathtubs had to be cleaned before we used them. Some of the beds had incorrect size bedding on them that did not appear clean so we washed our sheets before using the beds. The oven was so filthy, we refused to even use it. Opening the linen closet was shocking - bedding in there literally was taken from the dryer and shoved onto the shelves without even the pretense of folding any of it.

The dirt everywhere was clearly old dirt - by that I mean ground in filth that simply has not been cleaned. The carpeting needs to be professionally washed and for the cost charged per night, the very least this owner could do is purchase a new shower curtain and a new shower head along with unstained towels! We spent so much time being disgusted by the state of this place and cleaning up before we could use things that we were simply discouraged and couldn't wait to get out.

I would like to think that the owner, Anna is unaware of the condition of this house but that is impossible since her partner, Forrest was apparently just over at the home prior to our arrival. No, this owner, it appears, is quite content to collect people's money and provide an unkept home that leaves them feeling bitterly disappointed.

There are numerous gorgeous rentals in the Door County area so save yourself the angst and find another place with conscientious owners. All we can say is VACATIONERS BEWARE!!!

Owner's Response: Dear Dr. Pamela, I am very disappointed by your response. I frequently visit the house to check on maintenance issues and to do some deep cleaning. Our cleaning lady, Terri has been with us for 20 years and in that time we have had maybe 2 complaints, every one can have a bad day. But even if she had been remiss prior to your arrival, the house could not have been in the shape which you described. Somehow, there seems to be a confusion, Forrest is not an owner and has not been to the cottage in months but I have been up there several times this summer and fall. I take every complaint seriously and will redouble my efforts. My most precious reward is not the money but satisfied guests.

Absolutely everything we wanted - plus pelicans!

  • 5 of 5

Six of us - two grandparents, two parents, and two primary-age children - spent a happy week here at the end of June. The privacy of the place, the beauty of the lake, and the comfort of the cabin were all much treasured. We saw deer, foxes, pelicans, terns, wild turkey, pheasant, raccoons, and seagulls. What a delight to be in an environment that hasn’t been poisoned by toxic chemicals. Yes, there are a few spiders on the deck - as another guest has noted. One goes out in the morning and sweeps down the webs. No big deal.

The cabin smelled fresh - no musty odors. We found generous supplies of toilet paper and paper towels in the kitchen closet, as well as clean towels and extra blankets in the two linen closets. Cooking gear and dishes were also generously supplied. A couple of fix-it problems came up and the housekeeper worked with us to resolve them. As I am disabled, I was happy to have a main-floor bedroom and bathroom with a walk-in shower. I was also delighted to have an Ekornes Stressless chair on hand - that’s where I spent most of the week.

The beach at the cabin is rocky and the charming Liberty Grove Town Park - maybe a 10-minute walk - has a sandy beach. We found a trail from the south end of Nor-Dor Road that led down into Newport State Park, with more wonderful rocky beaches. Additional local attractions: the Shoreline Restaurant, Charlie’s Smokehouse, and the coffee shop, all in in Gills Rock; the Pioneer Store in Ellison Bay; Seaquist Orchards and the Door County Creamery in Sister Bay; the Ridges Nature Sanctuary in Bailey’s Harbor.

This cabin has a unique history. We enjoyed reading stories in the guest book about its past years. It’s not perfect - no summer rental is perfect - but we found much to love and we’d go back in a minute.

Owner's Response: Dear Pamela, thank you for your nice review. I love sharing my place with wonderful guests like you. I am going up there often for a little R&R, and to always improve on the place. I have solved the spider problem by calling in an exterminator. So glad you found the sandy beach in the county park, it is indeed only a few min. walk away. Delighted that you found the trail into Newport State Park, I use it daily. You must have walked only the first part of it, because as you continue you will find miles of beautiful sandbeach. You can also access this by a short drive to another county park within the State Park. Also, if you drive to the county park for Europe Lake you will have excellent swimming . I tend to kayak Europe Lake, which is an inland lake made for me, no weeds, beautiful clear water and you can always see the sandbottom. Thank you and please come again, Anna
