Ocean Front Cottage with Panoramic Views and Beautiful Sunsets
This seaside cottage is located on the very private west side of Matinicus Island. It has spectacular 180 degree ocean front views, beautiful sunsets and access to the shore with a great pebble beach. It was built to replicate a 1940s cottage and has a large front porch with comfortable Adirondack chairs, a hammock swing and lots of room for outside relaxation and ocean viewing. It will easily sleep 10-12 people and has plenty of space to share with extended family and friends. The cottage has a warm and cozy feel with hard wood floors, beamed ceilings and a propane stove fireplace. The main level has an inviting reading nook and a back room that doubles as a bedroom or den as well as a kitchen, dining area, laundry, full bath and deck with outdoor shower. The second floor has a full bath and four comfortable bedrooms including the master which overlooks the ocean to the west.
Matinicus is located 23 miles from Rockland, Maine in Penobscot Bay. The island is a wonderful place to get away from it all, a place for relaxation and exploration and hiking. There are no paved roads and everything is within walking distance since the island is only one mile wide by two miles long. Matinicus is also a natural bird sanctuary with hiking trails through spruce forests that lead to the shore. The beautiful ocean vistas are astounding.
Matinicus has two beautiful public sand beaches that are wonderful for swimming and collecting shells. The island is a working fishing community, not a tourist island, although visitors are always welcome. You can buy live lobster from the local fishermen and fresh baked bread and sweets from a resident baker. There is a small artisan's shop and art gallery to visit and the island residents host a local crafts fair once a week during July and August.
Getting to the island is part of the adventure. Penobscot Island Air located at Knox County Airport in Owls Head, Maine runs a flying service and a boat taxi service for transportation to Matinicus Island. Contact them for information and scheduling.
Please refer to our Lease Agreement which includes additional information including links for travel options to the Island.
If this is your first time to Matinicus Island, we recommend that you book for one full week. Once you are settled in you won't want to leave! Rental weeks in July and August are from Saturday to Saturday only.

Amazing, kind, and welcoming hosts! Beautiful location, easy walks to everything on the island. House was spacious and comfortable. Would definitely stay again.
We loved getting away from it all and decompressing with our family. The location is stunning and we were so comfortable there. Kim and John the owners are so kind and helpful always
This is our second time staying here and it's just perfect for our family. There's plenty of room, it's very comfortable, and the view can't be beat. The Libby's are great hosts. We're looking forward to our next trip!
Great place to get away with the family and from the world
My family - Daughters and their Family and I visit every other year and love the week letting the grandkids play outside all day. Weather wasn't the greatest this week but we still loved it.
The Libby's are great hosts! Very accommodating!
We had an amazing time getting away from it all on Matinicus Island. As is typical for island adventures, ours did not begin completely as planned, but our wonderful hosts were very helpful with coordinating transportation. What a gorgeous property with amazing sunsets and a private beach! Our family enjoyed a peaceful and fun week on the island, hiking, swimming, playing games, and meeting many friendly locals.
We had a great week on Matinicus yet again the Libby’s are great hosts although the weather didn’t cooperate for the first part of the week we still found plenty to do around the island and in the cottage with the ample supply of books puzzles and games. We will be back for sure!
We came to Matinicus for a family burial and the spacious cottage was perfect for all of the different family members that arrived and departed at different times.
We enjoyed our walks to the beach and the beautiful view from the front porch.
We purchased lobster from the local fishermen, and had a great family dinner on the picnic table.
Eva's (the local baker) blueberry coffee cake was the best.
We had such a lovely time at Kim and John's Cottage. There were 9 of us and the space easily accommodated us. Kim and John were lovely hosts and helped with pickup and drop off at the ferry. It had been over 35 years since we had been to Matinicus and our time there did not disappoint.
This is truly a special place.

Wonderfully isolated property with a fantastic view of the Atlantic Ocean--best sunsets ever! The house is beautiful and is the perfect place to host family and friends. It's really hard to leave the cottage. Hosts make sure your stay is enjoyable. We have rented this place four times, and it just gets better and better. Thank you!
This is our fourth summer on Matinicus. It's not for everyone. You have to bring all of your own food and prepare your own meals. Other than lobsters and a local bakery there are no other stores. If you're looking for solitude and beauty this is the place. Water is cold and clear.
The house alone would be amazing no matter where it was located - it is simply beautiful and designed for enhancing family time with it's open, flowing lay out. Perhaps the best feature though is the magnificent porch!! It is the perfect place for enjoying a morning cup of coffee, watching the sunsets or curling up with a book while listening to the waves roll the pebbles back and forth on the beach below. The fact that this home is on such a beautiful and magical island makes it a place we dream of returning to for years and years to come. Then there are the Libbys - who are the perfect hosts. It's a perfect package!!!!
I honestly don't know where to start: the views, the peace and serenity, the magnificent house with its wonderful porch and Adirondack chairs that beckon you to come and sit awhile, the pebble beach that can keep you entertained for hours as you marvel at nature's art, the warmth and cleanliness of the house, the sound of the ocean lulling one to sleep and awakening you in the morning, the very enjoyable outdoor shower where you are serenaded by birds and treated to views of the trees and crystal blue sky, and the island itself and its people who are warm and welcoming. Then of course there are the Libbys themselves, I seriously cannot imagine better hosts. I feel fortunate to have met them. They really go above and beyond to make it a perfect vacation. . The house has everything you could possibly need and yet is not cluttered and is exceptionally clean. It is a functional and beautifully designed home. If I was in the market for a home I can guarantee it would be a Libby post and beam home for sure. I seriously am simply counting the days until we can return. The island really has it all- and I'm not talking stores and shops and perhaps the stereotype attractions- but it has beaches and hikes and a special kind of quiet in a crazy world. My time at the Libby Cottage has allowed me to return to the regular business of life a better person for my time there. Thank you John and Kim. I look forward to many happy returns.
This is a very remote location that suits our family perfectly. You have to like to cook your own meals. No restaurants on island. Loving Lobster helps:-). Libby’s are great hosts.
Matinicus Island is a beautiful place to visit. We enjoyed walking on the rocks, swimming at sand beach and hiking the trails. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves on the shore was lovely. We left feeling very relaxed. The house was comfortable and our hosts were very friendly and helpful.
Matinicus Island is a very unique and special place. There is beautiful and dense vegetation, wildflowers, both sandy and stony beaches, incredible walks. The house was perfect - low key, very comfortable, well built and well designed. The kitchen was very functional and had everything we needed, including a lobster pot! The covered porch with Adirondack chairs drew us out both morning and night to look out over the sea. The nearby beaches provided great walks and we went to sleep listening to the gentle sounds of the waves. The house was extremely clean and the property perfectly maintained. The owners were excellent hosts, providing lots of helpful information about the island and making sure we were comfortable and having a great time. Can’t recommend it highly enough! Ultimate retreat for rest and relaxation.
The house was great with sweeping views of the ocean from the back porch. We brought food and cooked our own meals. Saw a bald eagle, went to the sandy beach, steamed lobster, ate a delicious pie from Eva's bakery, purchased art from David Sear's studio, watched the sunset over a beach fire every night. Matinicus is a magical place and John and Kim's cottage is the best way to experience it.
Matinicus Island is a place where your credit cards do you no good, where the views are priceless, and where relaxing can't be helped. It is beautiful.
North Beach provides a wonderful sandy cove to gaze out to the ocean, or play, like we did, with our grandson, enthralled with this new environment.
West Point will take your breath away, giving you a sense of the scale you are surrounded by, and providing serenity that is its own therapy. A huge rock, used by sailors to navigate years ago, is perched on the granite shelves, a sentinel for todays traveler as well.
The Matinicus Trail shows off the forests, the glens, the flowers, the rocks, and the isolation of Matinicus Island. Eons of erosion have produced postcard perfect sculptures, the forest acting as a gate against the hard shoreline. I have never seen, or stepped on, a place more beautiful than where this trail enters the ocean.
Bald eagles fly overhead, teasing with their majesty. Iconic, they speak to the freedom you feel as you sit on South Beach, letting go of time, the pace of life simply the next wave washing on the sandy shoreline. Sand Dollars, beach glass, all sorts of treasures to travel with and take home, abound.
Take the shortcut to Eva's bakery, and be rewarded with, if you are lucky, hot sticky buns fresh out of the oven. Haven't ever had a bad thing from her. The variety of her baked goods will astound you, and once you learn how much she and her husband keep the island together, she will amaze you even more.
There is a place we are all looking for, away from the red lights, traffic, the boredom of everyday. The place we know exists, a place where we can fuel our souls, and stop: stop worrying about deadlines, stop worrying about digital chatter, a place to stop and breath.
There is a place where all of that and much more happens - that place is Matinicus Island.
John and Kim; thank you, again, for being gracious, accommodating, and willing to share this special place in your lives with our family. It is one of our special places on this planet. We couldn't have enjoyed our visit more!
Thank you.
With love,

Excellent Vacation For Eight !!!
This is a beautiful cottage with two fabulous hosts. John and Kim are so devoted to making this a vacation you will enjoy and leave with a desire to return. Two of our eight people have stayed in other places on this island and have not been nearly as comfortable as we were here.
This place is clean, neat and well built with two of the most welcoming and accommodating hosts. 5 stars +

Matinicus Island is a wonderful place for family vacation. Great bakery open every day. You can walk to all points on the island, no car needed! Coastline is rugged and sandy beaches are beautiful. Spent our days exploring, berry picking, beachcombing. Great for kids of all ages. You will want to come back to Matinicus for meaningful family time every summer!

Very relaxing family vacation
We went with our daughters and their husbands and our 2 - 1 year old grandsons. It was a great way to spend time with them and yet everyone had space/ time for themselves walking the island and beaches. We brought our own kayaks and enjoyed using them daily. The grandsons loved running around the large grassy backyard. We loved the view while watching the them. Thanks to the local lobstermen we enjoyed several lobster dinners.
House and location are beautiful!
Note: if Disney World and amusement parks are your idea of a great family vacation this not the spot for you.

Beautiful, private island get-a-way!
Marvelously relaxing time spent with friends; could not have had more comfortable setting or hosts. Everything was immaculate and cozy. Great place to hike along the rocks or enjoy the water and sun on the beaches. Spectacular sunsets!
