The Bazil Gordon House

Travel back in time nearly 200 years and stay at the Bazil Gordon House -built by America's first millionaire. Circa 1820, this house started as the private home of Bazil Gordon a short walk from his trading outpost in Historic Falmouth, VA directly on the Rappahannock River. The house has also been a civil war hospital, a stop on the underground railroad, a tavern, an excavation site that found venetian trade beads in the back yard, and it is now completely remodeled in 2021 to host guests.

The property definitely feels historic and is a very good location, not far from the historic downtown area. The property had a HVAC issue that caused the heating to not work but the host got a company to come out and repair the issue just after we arrived and it worked great after that. Our only recommendation is that the linens need to be updated as the towels and blankets need to be newer and fresher.

We stayed here for a getaway weekend and it was a perfect choice! The house was large and comfortable - great for a cozy weekend. The location is also fantastic - across the street from the Rappahannock River and a short 5 minute drive from Fredericksburg's old town. The host provided clear communication and answered questions quickly.

First Vrbo - Fantastic!

Bottom Line Up Front: Our first time using Vrbo, we had a fantastic stay at a beautifully restored old house hosted by an amazing owner. Longer version: our daughter's family (4 kids aged from 9-15) is on sabbatical from the mission field overseas. We do not have room in our house to accomodate them comfortably, so I looked on multiple sites and found this house in Fredericksburg, a half hour from where we live. Both parents and 4 kids were all able to have a bed to sleep in, and with the loft and study having pullout beds we were to stay with them their final night. Everyone was able to spread out and have room, and sleep in comfortable beds. The situation was ideal.The owner, Jared, was the perfect host. He guided me through "first Vrbo-itis" smoothly, patiently explaining the details. His communication skills were excellent, and he was very responsive. He just made everything easy and efficient while we stayed there.The house is BEAUTIFUL. IMHO, it has the perfect blend of modern features with old school character. We loved being able to touch brick and wood from 200 years ago, but also having modern conveniences. The kitchen was great, well stocked with paper products and any cooking equipment we could possibly want. Having all the kitchen equipment was actually therapeutic for our son-in-law, who used to be a professional chef and still loves to cook. The area around the house is great for family activities.In all, a fabulous experience for our family.

Wonderful property!

We were here for our son’s graduation from UMW. The home was had everything we needed and was super clean and comfortable. While a historic property, the inside is completely modern. It was also super convenient to everything in town. We very much enjoyed hanging out on the front porch and the as the weather was lovely. And also walking across the street to the park and river. Thank you so much!

Charming Historic Home

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We love history and we were thrilled to live within the storied walls, if only for a few days. There were plenty of towels, clean bedding and a well-stocked kitchen. We will have beautiful, peaceful memories of our time here and we are grateful to our host for a lovely weekend.

Wonderful stay!

We had a great time and the house had everything that we needed. I didn’t know how to change the temperature on the second floor, but the response was super quick and was resolved within two minutes of me sending a message! It worked perfectly it was just user error.

Lovely Historic Property

I stayed at the Bazil Gordon home with friends and family for a three day weekend. We were celebrating the recovery of our friend who was in a catastrophic accident one year ago. This is the first time she had left her Mother's home. We sat on the peaceful back deck and enjoyed the "old south' lawn, as well as the neighbor's beautiful gardens. It could not have been more peaceful. The house was very clean and neatly organized. Thank you to Jared who did everything he could to make our stay possible. Rent this house with confidence.

Very nice!

Adorable, fully-renovated historic house! Very close to downtown Fredericksburg with tons of options for coffee shops and restaurants. Booked this for myself and three co-workers so the four bedrooms were ideal.

A PIECE OF HISTORY!

A great place to stay in an area so steeped in history. Perfect for our family's long holiday weekend. Communication with the owner was good and house was located centrally to Fredericksburg and all of its historic attractions.

Welcome respite in a historic home

Convenient location near sites in downtown Fredericksburg, and a stones throw from a lovely shaded, paved walking path. Comfortable home for our family of four.

Perfect!

We had the privilege of staying at the Gordon Basil house for a week. This was such a fun place to stay, away from the city but close enough to enjoy day trips to the capital and surrounding history. The house is a beautiful mix of its historic significance and modern comforts. The space was perfect for our family of 5 to 6. The house was old and it was exciting to imagine what each room may have looked like 200 years ago. The kitchen was large and modern, the bedrooms were large enough with space to move around. The dining room and living room were comfortable and beautiful. The exposed brick was beautiful. The back yard was a garden! Very lush and beautiful filled with fireflies each evening. The laundry room is in the basement, but that is to be expected in a old building such as this and we enjoyed considering the purpose of this space long ago. We loved our stay. Thank you.
