About Lucia or Ben
Our family is from the Philadelphia area, just 2 hour drive to Betterton, Maryland. Our careers are medical/hospital related and insurance managers. We grew up in the northeast section of Philadelphia, a suburb approximately 20 miles north of downtown Philadelphia. One us was born in Italy and immigrated to the USA as a very small child. We still have family in southern Italy and visit there as often as possible.
Lucia or Ben purchased this House in 1997
Why Lucia or Ben chose Betterton
Our family has owned this home since 1997; we are from the Philadelphia area and when we made a decision to purchase a "beach house" we wanted a place to reflect a beach community of a bygone era. We stumbled into Betterton on a snowy, cold winter day. As soon as we came up Main Street and saw the Bay below and the beach signs, we knew this would be the place for our "beach house." The first summer in Betterton we were so pleasantly surprised at the peacefulness of the community; the friendliness of the neighbors -- they waving as they pass by. This would prove to us that we would always have a place to relax and enjoy the company of family, friends, and neighbors in a way that we could have only dreamed. The very first upgrade would be to expand the deck because we knew this would be where we could view the bay and watch the boats; we could congregate for morning coffee, eat our meals outdoors and generally enjoy outdoor living. As time went by, we converted the heating system to a modern day convenience -- central air conditioning. This proved to be challenging in a house built in 1929, but it was accomplished! The kitchen is generally vintage (as we like to say) and I can just imagine my grandmother cooking up a big family meal in there! Hope you will enjoy this home as your own!
What makes this House unique
Our beach house is vary spacious and no photo can capture the large open spaces and common areas where a large amount of people can gather together for a meal, play games, or simply talk!

Nice home close to the beach. Loved the history.
Had a very nice stay. House was extremely hot when we arrived but cooled down rather quickly after starting the air so no worries. Very close walk to the beach and a couple good restaurants. Thank you Ben & Lucia. Hope we get the chance to stay again!
Great family getaway, close to the beach and pet friendly!
My family recently stayed over New Years weekend and enjoyed the charm, history and location of the house very much! Bitter cold temps did not allow for as much outdoor activity as usual but the cozy fireplace and spacious 2 floors made it easy to kickback, relax, eat, drink & be merry!
We chose the Betterton home mainly due to being pet friendly and also within 2 hrs of home. We visited a local winery and ate at Barbara's By The Bay (would highly recommend :) The pups were right at home, with a yard to play and quite streets for walking.
Just note, I would take some paper products next time, there is no dishwasher. I am sure I just overlooked that not being in the description. Not a deal breaker for us.
We would definitely stay again in warmer temps to enjoy the area & beach.
Communication with owners was super and all questions were answered quickly.
Thank you the hospitality Betterton!
Thanks for your note and glad that you enjoyed your Betterton stay. The beach in the summer months is a great place for relaxing; there are free outdoor concerts in Chestertown and occasionally the Betterton town hall (across from our house) hosts outdoor movie nights. All in all, the Eastern Shore of Maryland is a treasure!
Large but Rustic
The home is very close to the beach and a very nice restaurant. It is large and fit the 11 of us easily and includes a little bonus room we could use for crafting away from the general area. The home could use a little refresh though, a little more rustic that we anticipated, some areas were pretty dirty (couch/floor rugs/mats). The kitchen has coffee cups, utensils and such so the only thing you need to bring is your linens for sleeping. There was already toilet paper, paper towels, and dish soap as well. You definitely feel like it's someone's home you're borrowing rather than the typical sterile rentals.
Great old Eastern Shore house
With all the space our gathering of three, then five the last night was totally comfortable. We could have our dog Tilly, too, for a fee. A fine headquarters for meals and wine on the porch, we walked around town and went to the beach. I'd recommend this house for its informal charm, and it has everything you'd need.
Thank you for your comments and glad that you enjoyed your meals and "wine on the porch" and that Tilly came along! Being together is what it's all about!
The house is old but spacious. You can get the bay breezes out on the deck. Short distance to beach for swimming and kayaking. Nice home for a family get together. The community is peaceful and tranquil and we all loved it.
Thanks for your kind words; short walk to the beach and bay breezes really do make for a great and peaceful get-away.
Great beach house
We stayed here with friend for a weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This is an old-school beach house with lots of charm. We loved the close proximity to the beach and the very laid-back location. It is an old house, so none of the rooms are large or super posh, but it's a great place to enjoy some downtime with friends or family. Bring your own linens and any music or other electronics you might require.
Thanks for your note. Yes, the house was built for the summer traveler of days gone by. The six bedrooms are just what is needed for a good night sleep; the living spaces (dining room, living room and enclosed "sun room" and deck) are spacious and great places for gathering after a day at the beach.
Just a 2 minute walk to the beach; located at the head of the Chesapeake Bay overlooking the confluence of the Sassafras, Elk, and Susquehanna Rivers, Betterton is a lovely town with the only beach in Kent County, Maryland. Come to Betterton for sailing, swimming, and dine at the restaurant overlooking the Bay.
