Overview

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Our Squalicum Lake cottage, provides the ideal setting for a romantic 'getaway for two' or perfect accommodations and lodging while touring Western Washington. We're a quick 90 miles from Seattle, 54 miles from Vancouver B.C. and just outside the city limits of Bellingham. The cottage is nestled among cedar and fir trees on tranquil acreage overlooking the lake and has a fully equipped kitchen/living area, bedroom, bathroom, a private porch and an abundance of skylights for stargazing.

Our cottage is for two adults only and the property won an AIA (State Architectural Award) for contemporary design. We also have unsolicited reviews for Squalicum Lake Cottage on major travel sites too. Pls note we have a three night minimum, no children, no pets. (October to May, two night minimum.) No smoking permitted in cottage.

The living room, with a vaulted beamed ceiling looks out onto Squalicum Lake and Squalicum Mountain. Large windows provide a view for watching the fish jump on the lake or enjoying the birds at the feeders. The cottage is situated in the middle of colorful perennial gardens and during the spring and fall you can see large flocks of migratory birds land on the lake.

The kitchen is fully equipped including a microwave, stove, oven, toaster, coffee maker and refrigerator. Dishes, utensils and pans are provided as well.

A white iron and brass queen sized foam (tempurpedic type) bed...cozy bedroom to snuggle or take that long sought after nap. The guests at Squalicum Lake Cottage come to slow the pace of their daily lives.

All guests are greeted with fresh flowers in the cottage and we share the bounty from our garden when in season.

Eagles and a wide variety of other birds are a common sight as well as deer wandering through the meadow. Should you visit in the summer you might spot a heron or kingfisher looking for a bite to eat in the 26,000-gallon pond right outside your door. Dozens of frogs chorus at evening time, along with soft owl duets often heard after dark.

Squalicum Lake is not for swimming. There is no 'beach.' It is a migratory lake for fowl and a no motor flyfishing lake.

Three night minimum at $125 plus taxes/nite. (October to May, two night minimum.)Weekly rate of $800 plus tax.

Our guests initial comments are always that the website photos never do the property justice. How does one capture an entire mountain behind a lake?

About John & Liane Worlund

We are retired but stay very busy working on the property.

Why John & Liane Worlund chose Northwest & Islands

We built our property because we couldn't find another place with this view and solitude.

What makes this cottage unique

A beautiful landscape with many types of birds. In the summer when our garden is in full swing, you might see 150 lilies and 9 ft tall sunflowers growing amidst vegies and a variety of other flowers and vegetables. We share our produce and fruit grown on our property with our guests when in season. Guests are often greeted with fresh flowers on the table.

We provide a large binder of local activities, maps, restaurant menus for our guests to peruse.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had such a lovely stay at your wonderful getaway. It's so peaceful here, and also so central to many fun things to do. We will certainly return for another round of relaxation in this special place. Thank you for everything.

Peaceful Retreat.

  • 5 of 5

This home is lovely. Everything feels new and clean and it is the perfect size for a couple. The kitchen was well appointed and the furnishings were very comfortable. The location is wonderful- close enough to town to have easy access to activities, restaurants, and conveniences, but just far enough to offer solitude.

Liane and John were great hosts. They were available to answer questions and offer suggestions and they even shared tomatoes and apples from their garden with us.

The bird watching was a highlight for us. Nothing could be better than sitting on the front porch, sipping a glass of wine, watching all the various birds come to enjoy the feeders in the yard, and hearing the geese announce their arrival as they descended to the lake for a rest.

The trail at Lake Whatcom is not to be missed and is a short drive from the cottage. It is well maintained and offers beautiful views. We enjoyed picking berries to snack on as we walked.

We loved our stay here and hope to have the opportunity to come for a longer visit next time!

very tranquil, peaceful, pastoral yet close to bellingham

  • 5 of 5

I want to comment on the amazing quality of the cottage itself. It is super clean, fully stocked and extremely comfortable. The bedroom is so cozy and the bed is amazing. The living room is full of floor to ceiling windows that look out over the pond/lake and gardens. This was the first time I rented a cottage that really had a fully equipped kitchen. We were looking for a retreat experience and this cottage was perfect. The owners were welcoming, helpful at the same time respecting our need for a retreat experience. The gardens, the birds, the windows, the comfort!!! I highly recommend this spot. It would be a great writers retreat. It is not a wilderness experience yet it is very close to wilderness areas. It is close to Bellingham yet far enough away to be tranquil and peaceful.

It was fun chatting w/ you one evening and should you ever need another getaway that isn't too far, please think of us. Yes...a writer's retreat....or one for a plein air painter! Maybe someday! Enjoy the rest of your summer and best of luck to you....your plans sounded exciting and fun.

A peaceful zen gem of a cottage surrounded by lovingly tended gardens.

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a quiet 4th of July away from the raucous fireworks in Seattle. The cottage was perfectly represented online and beautifully appointed with garden sculptures and paintings by Lianne, an artist and co-owner with her husband John. We were fortunate to see bald eagles and deer feeding in the lush grassy fields from the comfy covered patio. We're already planning a return off season visit in the late Fall. Bellingham offers wonderful dining options and hiking, or you can head the other direction up to Artist's Point on Mt. Baker (our favorite hikes in all of Western WA). It was too early in the season for hiking as the road was not cleared yet but we had fun in the snow! The bed (important to us seniors) was soft as a cloud with sumptuous bedding. We cooked all of our dinners in the comfortable kitchen with wonderful views of the fly fishing lake about 100 yards below the cottage. If you're looking for a peaceful getaway anytime of year, I highly recommend this little jewel.
