Overview

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

The Building at Lewis Farm is a cottage for two (one dog or cat is also welcome) on the Southwest corner of Block Island featuring privacy and set overlooking rolling pastures, stone walls, and spectacular ocean sunsets.

Lewis Farm dates from 1817. Farming ended in 1964 and the family has since been at the forefront of the island’s open space movement. Lewis Farm sits in the middle of 400 acres of open space. The farm consists of seven dwelling units; five are occupied by family. The Building at Lewis Farm is the most secluded of all the dwellings.

On Lewis Farm we herald the land. Our focus is the land and the outdoors. The accommodations are rustic but appropriately set in the middle of quiet, elegant views of meadows and ocean looking toward southwest ledge and Montauk. An island farmer grazes 20-30 head of cattle on 40 acres just to the west of the cottage. The west-facing deck is perfect for counting the cows, or the fishing boats.

The interior first floor has a full kitchen space with needed utensils and service, coffee pot and toaster; the remainder of the first floor is a sitting room with chairs, couch, and dining table. Sleeping with two twin beds and full bath are upstairs. Linens and towels are not provided. There is an enclosed outdoor shower with hot and cold water.

There is telephone with local service and a radio but no TV. A clothes washer is available at the owner's dwelling.

Most of our clientele returns year after year for decades. New openings are rare. People who choose The Building at Lewis Farm thrive on its peace and quiet, the views, and the farm heritage. They entertain themselves with the island’s daytime outdoor activities, and evenings in town or spent quietly at home.

Boat reservations for your car are a necessity and should be made Immediately upon booking your rental. Google Block Island Ferry for their web site.

Linens and towels are not provided.

Why The Owner chose Block Island

The Building at Lewis Farm is not a vacation rental that we purchased. Lewis Farm is our heritage since 1817, and our home. The Building at Lewis Farm is a seasonal living space that has been rented for over 45 years

Gigantic Views

  • 5 of 5

“Embrace the inconveniences” is the mantra of Block Island, and it applies to this petite, minimalistic cottage, too. Although we be giants (that is, tall!), we forgot about the head-bumping beams and ceilings, tiny twin beds and patchy phone service as we soaked up expansive 180-degree vistas of rolling pasture, stone walls and Atlantic Ocean. We have never seen our dog so happy! Peggy and David are pleasant, unobtrusive hosts. We’ll be back for those five-star views...and the amazing outdoor shower!

Little slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Words cannot describe just how wonderful the Lewis family and their farm is. Dave & Peggy could not be any nicer and so accommodating. The cottage was just perfect! It's small and charming with breathtaking views. Truly a place we are hopeful to be returning to every year. Thank you again for a sharing!

Happy Dog

  • 5 of 5

Breathtaking sunsets set to a sound track of birds, crickets, cows, distant surf and sea bells. We never repeat vacations but have made our reservations for 2018. Had a great time having our dog with us, and he loved it. We did a number of geocaches and though we didn't find each cache we found beautiful vistas all over the Island and then came back to the Lewis farm for the best view of all. One warning if you're over 6 foot watch your head going into the kitchen. The Lewis's were charming and we felt honored to be on the property of a family that has such a legacy in preserving the Island.

Heaven

  • 5 of 5

I cannot imagine a better perch for one or two people and your dog on one of the prettiest places on earth. This is a gorgeous piece of property. Forget your cares (and electronics) and completely unwind. We spent an extraordinary week here for the first time with our dog in summer 2014 and have been eagerly anticipating our two weeks in 2015. We hope to return every single year. The views, hiking, swimming and overall feel are totally zen-like and utterly relaxing. After exploring the island, nothing beats the hot outdoor shower followed by a glass of wine on the porch watching a spectacular sunset while cows gently graze nearby next to stone walls at the end of the day.

Fantastic, friendly owner enhances the experience and can answer all your questions.

Both car and bikes recommended. There is wi-fi but no TV, etc. There are two twin beds but couples easily can push them together.

It's not fancy. It's just perfect.

Paradise Found!

  • 5 of 5

The Building at Lewis Farm is a large slice of paradise - the perfect spot to unwind, relax, renew, and absorb as much fresh air and sunshine that you can handle. We found the property exactly as described and it was spotless and well-maintained. The owners were very nice and responded to our inquiries before and during our arrival very quickly. We've rented other properties on BI over the years - closer to Old Harbor and the SE Lighthouse - and all with the full trappings of home on the mainland, but this minimalist cottage was the BEST - we didn't miss anything. An important plus for us was being able to bring a pet - there are very few properties on BI that allow dogs. We will definitely return to Lewis Farm.

Third year and still in love with "The Building at Lewis Farm"

  • 5 of 5

Another vacation at "The Building at Lewis Farm" and each year we have been so pleased with the attention to detail that the owners provide for such a quaint little cottage. Perfect for a couple or single and pet friendly with privacy galore! The views are amazing and the photos hardly do it justice. If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy nature this is it with just a short ride to town and beaches. We have rented many places on Block Island, some with all the fancy trappings that we left at home, but none compare to this precious gem that these owners are willing to share!
