About The Owner

We found the Berkshires by chance as neither of us was really familiar with the area. Now that we've had the property for nearly 18 years, we have become authorities on the Berkshires and we share that information with all our guests.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1992

Why The Owner chose Great Barrington

We chose this cottage in the Berkshires because of its proximity to both leisure and cultural activities. Additionally, we loved the light and landscape that can be viewed from the cottage at different times of day.

What makes this cottage unique

When we are at the cottage, we enjoy sitting on the deck and reading or sunning. Locally, there are hikes and bike routes, both mountain and road, that we take advantage of. We explore new areas of the Berkshires for future hikes. We love going to downtown Great Barrington and parking ourselves with our dog, at an outdoor cafe. We spend time working in our garden and bird watching.

A wonderful retreat

  • 5 of 5

Very comfortable. Close to town but far enough away. Shira is a lovely host. Only potential problem was lack of cell service and spotty Internet but there was a land line and being unplugged for a couple of days was therapeutic. If necessary, there were places to connect in town. Not a big issue for us and it sounds like the town is addressing it.

Paradise setting, charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

The hosts are very gracious and provided everything we needed and special touches for delight. The property is a gorgeous, spacious, tiered, beautifully landscaped yard entirely surrounded by a border of trees-- very private. That is, acknowledging that the cottage is attached to the hosts' home. The cottage is tastefully decorated and full of wonderful art. Note that you won't want to do major cooking in the kitchen -- the fridge is under the counter, the stovetop is a two-burner hot plate, and the oven is a toaster oven. There's a microwave and coffee pot and everything provided works fine. The location is about 5 miles West of Great Barrington, very close to the NY border. We were so glad that our senior dog was welcome too.

More then we had Expected

  • 5 of 5

The hosts, Shira and Bruce greeted

us warmly with a wealth of information about the area. Their property was located on a country road and the house was surrounded by beautiful gardens and a few adirondack chairs for enjoying the scenery. A large screened porch that led to the entrance, had patio furniture, and shelving to conveniently leave our coolers, umbrellas, sunblock etc.

The cottage itself was comfortable, clean and inviting with rustic furnishings and lovely art work by Shira on the walls. In the mornings we would get cool breezes and for muggy nights, the air conditioners made it very comfortable. The pictures on the internet prepared us for what the cottage looked like, but we had not expected all the extra touches- the wine, muffins, and breakfast staples in the refrigerator, the bathroom stocked with shampoo, natural soap, band-aids, and mostly anything you might need.

We would definitely recommend this cottage.

Berkshire Mountain Cottage Experience

  • 4 of 5

I stayed at the Berkshire Mountain Cottage with a friend. The owners, Bruce and Shira, were friendly and accommodating. The cottage was clean, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. We were there during an unseasonably hot weekend, so sitting on the lovely screened in porch was not really much of an option for us. It would have been great to have an air conditioner in the second bedroom. However, we were able to work around this by leaving doors open from the air conditioned main bedroom and living room. All in all, we had a lovely stay, and we would definitely come back.

Lovely stay

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I had a lovely three-day stay at Bruce and Shira's cottage. It was really well-located to going out to dinner in Great Barrington, and to seeing many of the other local sights, such as Bash Bish falls, Benedict Pond, and Mt. Washington State Forest. The cottage is pleasantly decorated and comfortable, with AC in the living room and a ceiling fan in the bedroom. Everything was very clean, and Shira and Bruce were friendly and helpful via email when we made the reservation, and stocked our fridge with a few basics for our arrival. The cooking area is a just a small kitchenette, but well equipped with utensils; it was perfect for breakfast and snacks, and for preparing the dinner we cooked out on the grill. The property was really quiet and peaceful too. Overall, a really pleasant experience and a good value.

It was great. A lovely spot. Clean, comfortable and warm and friendly owners who gave us great suggestions for restaurants and dog parks. We spent our time hiking the local trails. We will definitely be back.
